Two New WFB Polls For “The Born-Again Identity”
I’ve been reading a lot of mixed reaction to “The Born-Again Identity” and thought, what better way to gage proper reaction than with a poll!
Pardon the scientific experiment here, but I have two polls this time. One that tries to categorize reactions (our usual fare), and the other is just a basic ranking on a scale from one to ten. We’ve found people respond to different kinds of polls and would like to see which is more effective.
I want Cas back as a series regular. He adds so much to the show.
I do not want Castiel back at all. He was a deus ex machina here, an easy out for Castiel and Sam all in one big magic plot fixer. Dean had to stand around like an idiot so Castiel could take down a few measly demons. And the real Dean wouldn’t have saved that damn coat and kept moving it from car trunk to car trunk. Dean is now a pod person, thanks to Castiel. The last 10 minutes showed why they had to get rid of Castiel in the first place. He uses his ever changeable powers while Sam and Dean do nothing but watch. Sam and Dean deserve better than that. And I want to watch better than that. The Castiel parts of this episode were either boring or nonsensical.
My only wish would have been for them to do a two-parter. They covered a lot in one episode and while Sam’s hospital stay was about right, giving Jared an amazing opportunity to really show his acting chops, the Dean – Cas reunion seemed rushed. I would have preferred more there, lingering in the emotional moments and allowing Jensen and Misha to really show the build-up more and then the eventual resolution once Cas remembered.
After Cas took on Sam’s memories of Hell, it would have been nice to have more time there too. Sam reacting to Cas’ sacrifice, Dean and Sam having a full-on brotherly moment reunion hug, and then a reflective moment from Dean, having gained his angel friend back only to lose him again. No, all isn’t forgiven, but Cas gave him back Sam and that counts for something.
Dean still needs to resolve all his conflicted feelings for Cas and what he did, the betrayal and the hurt it caused. Jensen is so masterful, with just a momentary look he could have conveyed more to come. And I want more…I always want more!
B.J.
I loved this episode, but if I am honest, I felt that it was lacking in emotion. I envisioned something more like “When the Levee Breaks,” one of my favorites. Sam was too stoic throughout. I expected–or was hoping–for more chewing of the scenery. 🙂 That said, everyone–especially Jared–did a wonderful job, as usual.
Could not vote in either poll because there were no choices to describe how much you liked the episode and there was superb acting from Jared, Jensen and Mark P but I loathed every friggen moment that MC/Cas was on screen and I detested the way Sam’s storyline was so expediently resolved, once again making Cas into the tragic victim of supernatural forces.
