The Winchester Family Business Supernatural Season 7 Awards – Editor’s Choice
The fans have voted and made their voices heard, and now it’s my turn! Time for the totally subjective, completely unscientific, purely for entertainment purposes (and perhaps designed to fuel lively debate) Winchester Family Business Editor’s Choice awards. The editor being me.
The following categories are ones that I’ve done before in prior seasons’ awards. As I’ve stated before, the winners have been chosen based on my bored mind who had a little too much time at work to overanalyze. Feel free to share your choices in the comments, tell me how wrong I am!
Sadly, there is one category that I’ve used every year since the awards began that I had to dismiss this year. Best Winchester Death cannot be awarded. I looked 800 kinds of sideways to see if anything came close. Dean in Purgatory was it, and I’m still not sure if that counts as being in the death category. It’s more like displaced. There’s no physical body left behind. Rather than ponder over technicalities, I omitted it.
Without further delay, here are the Editor’s Choice winners.
The Best Appearance of Sam Winchester’s Hair
“Defending Your Life”
I don’t know what happened, but something went very right hair-wise in this otherwise extremely weak episode. Sam’s hair was spectacular from beginning to end. If you’re going to go with a completely ludicrious and poorly written plot, you might as well cut your losses and look fantastic doing it.
“Defending Your Life” even inspired a whole hair article for the episode itself, the first time that’s ever happened. If half attention was paid to hair than the actual episode, it would have been a huge classic.
This isn’t just the best appearance of Sam’s hair, but this is the best I’ve ever seen Dean’s as well. I vote for the longer look from now on! Just amazing.
Honorable Mention
“The Born-Again Identity”
Is it wrong of me to choose an episode with hair so bad it’s good? Of course the hair is frazzled on purpose. Sam’s having a mental breakdown! Couple that disheveled mess with a scruffy “too crazy to groom” beard and suddenly, insanity never looked so hot. And yes, I feel totally guilty saying that. Poor Sam had to really suffer to entertain me like this.
I’m guessing Jeanie Chow was on vacation the week they filmed Defending Your Life and took her overabundance of goopy hair products with her.
That was some spectacular hair!
Gawd I LOVE those sideburns !
In case anyone missed it, here’s the winner of best gratuitous scene without the gory bits:

I LOVED Chet! I was definitely sad when his head and his body parted ways. He was so entertainingly evil! On top of the “everything tastes better with cheese” I loved that he kept a body in the trunk for road trip snacks, and for some reason I was really tickled when he’s yelling up pithy comments from the sex torture dungeon when the boys are upstairs.
Dick Roman was great too, but I wish Misha had played his right-hand monster instead of Edgar. He did such a fantastic job in the few minutes he had as a Levi, all maniacal glee. It would’ve been fun if they had kept him around to play a Chomper longer, and I think he would’ve been highly entertaining in the Edgar role.
These awards were lots of fun!
Thanks Alice! You’re right, Chet was fun, cocky, and enjoyed being a villain. I wish Osiris had been better written, especially after they cast such a good actor. Definitely on the missed opportunities list.
It amazes me that in all the drama this year there wasn’t a single real Winchester death.
Looking forward to the silliness to follow!
These awards were HILARIOUS! Thanks, Alice!!!
I’m with Miggymom58 in relation to the sideburns. They’re definitely growing on me (not literally, of course). It’s a good look and I’m actually finding it hard to imagine Sam without them at this stage.
It’s nice to bring a little levity to proceedings so thanks for this, Alice.
I’ve only got to page 2 so far but I just had to stop and flail over Sam’s hair in DYL. It was absolutely beautiful in that episode. If only the gloopy hair products would disappear permanently and we could have Sam!Hair like this all the time.
And, yeah, it was rather wonderful in TBAI too. There was some pretty awesome Sam Angst!Hair in that episode.
What a fun article, Alice! As I read through I giggled at some of the references and decided that 1) Some clowns are just creepy – especially with pointy teeth 2) Becky Rosen just gets on my nerves 3) I doubt that I can continue eating melted cheese on everything, I’m potentially scarred for life now, and 4) I really dislike the sideburns.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the “silly categories” are!
Great post! Completely agree on the sideburns. A bit to heavy-Elvis for me. His hair did look good in DYL. In fact, that one by the car looks like Jared’s hair when he’s not working.
LOVED that gratuitous scene. Thanks for doing this.
I loved your editor awards! Sam’s sideburns (yuck), my father had the same ones…in1975! Dean with a Tommy Gun (yummy). A full upper body shot of Dean with tattoo & the one with him wearing a sweater and jacket (swoon). The shot of Sam’s bare feet sticking out on the bed (laughed out loud). “Stairway to Heaven”, I’ve heard that song so many times, I would go gaga if someone sang it 24/7 to me. Lucifer trumps the Leviathans tenfold for the chill factor, I was always afraid of Satan. On a last note, thanks for including the cute picture of Jared as emo-boy.
• ‘Lester. Is that a GERMAN name?’ HA! And the Bad Cop in Shirtsleeves? Yum.
• No argument from me on The Slice Girls sex scene 😉 That shower scene was just cruel, though! And Mickey, that link? You should be knighted.
• Best MOTW: I agree Chet was brilliant and it was indeed a shame to lose him – although I do think Edgar was excellent too. Looking forward to more Alpha Vamp 🙂
• I do agree on Worst MOTW – plus the fact that he had a strong sub-continental (Indian/Pakistani) accent when he was supposed to be Egyptian was just lazy.
• Poor Sam and the Lucifer torture – the Hellfire as he realises the hand scar is not going to work brought me to tears.
• The clown teaser was good, but I have to agree Reading is Fundamental with the thunder and lightning really packed a punch.
• Skimming the gory collection of photos under Worst Teaser, reminded me: when Supernatural started, didn’t Kripke say something like ‘what you DON’T see is scarier’. Hmmm.
• Inanimate object. Yup, that Turducken Slammer oozing grey goop stopped my chicken sandwich addiction in its tracks.
• The awkward moment you chose made me laugh – particularly Sam’s face. And on a shallow note, didn’t Dean look beeyootiful in that scene. Wow.
• I have to say when it comes to villains I found Lucifer was often more irritating than skin-crawling. Though Dick Roman in the Girl with a Tattoo episode, when Charlie turns around at her workstation and he is right behind her, made me jump.
Thanks for this, Alice! Supernatural Through the Looking Glass 🙂
I loved all your choices. I vote for more Dean and Sam shirtless scenes in Season 8. (I admit it…I’m shallow) and also more great hair for both guys. I loved Dean’s hair being longer, but I’m starting to think that Sam could use a haircut and a trim on his sideburns. Let them both have some facial hair. They both look fantastic with their summer beards! 😉
I found myself watching a rerun of Defending Your Life last night just to decide whether I agreed with your assessment of Sam’s hair. While it was better than it usually is, I’d still like about an inch taken off!
Great list!
