Supernatural Season Finale Earns 57% Bump in DVR Ratings
DVR Ratings were released today for the final episode of Supernatural season seven and once again, consistent with all of this season, the show got a huge bump in ratings. There was a 57% increase from an 18-49 demo perspective, the key measurement for advertisers. "Survival of The Fittest" went up from a .7 to a 1.1.
While we aren’t sure what this means in terms of total viewers, we know that 20% of The CW viewers watch online and the 57% theoretically could be applied to total viewers as well. If that’s the case, considering the final ratings were 1.56 million viewers, the approximate bump from both online and DVR is 2.75 million total. That’s still good enough to be The CW’s top show of the week (considering The Vampire Diaries finished it’s season a week earlier).
The entire DVR chart for the week of May 14 – May 20th can be found at TV By The Numbers. I’ve updated our all seasons US ratings chart to include all of season seven’s info now. The comparison from the first season is still quite interesting. I’ll have to scientifically prove someday how the highest rated Supernatural season once DVR and online is worked in was very likely season four.

Okay, bring on season 8!

I’m sure these kinds of numbers is what Mark Pedowitz is looking at when he says he needs to get those DVD viewers back to watching live. I’d think with the overseas sales making the show profitable, he has some time to work that happening.
I am hoping that Jeremy Carver will give us a gritty, grown-up season that features the two brothers as leads and the support characters; in fact, in a support role, along with putting the horror/drama back into the show. I kind of expect him to do just that and hope it will draw viewers back.
As a fan who has lost interest in the endless rinse-repeat of something’s wrong with Sam, Dean must worry about it, I skipped most of S7 and only came back for the episodes with Cas in them. I’m enthusiastic about season 8 because at last it promises something different and it looks like Cas will be back in Team Free Will where he belongs, with the profound bond back too. I’m very excited about the Purgatory storyline and hoping to get three or four episodes set in Purgatory with Sam using his smarts to get Dean and Cas back. I think the show is going to suffere from the move to Wednesdays so that means it needs all the help it can get – and that includes from Casfans who also contribute to the ratings and deserve to see their favorite get a good storyline in season 8. I know I won’t bother watching live without that.
