Preview for Episode 7.20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo

When “Supernatural” returns this Friday, Dean and Sam’s biggest threat is not coming from a ghost. Instead, they will deal with encrypted code that contains sensitive information about them and all of it is stored on Frank’s computer.

If you couldn’t tell from the title, “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo” is a reference to the bestselling Steig Larsson crime novel “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, and features geek genre fan-fave Felicia Day as Charlie Bradbury, a Lisbeth Salander-like computer hacker, and a brilliant one at that.

Unfortunately she finds herself on the wrong side of the hostilities when Leviathan leader Dick Roman (James Patrick Stuart) insists she crack the firewall on Frank’s hard drive in 72 hrs or she’s fired. Not the best incentive to give an employee.

Unknown to both Charlie and Roman, paranoid Frank set up a prewritten email to be sent if someone tried to hack into his computer. So Charlie sets the boys on her trail.  Way to go Frank!

But no matter, eventually she allies herself with the Winchesters who are interested in keeping their secrets buried, and simultaneously digging up info on her boss. Dean has been obsessed all season with Roman, and Charlie could be the key to getting him closer to the corporate giant.

But it’s not a comfortable position for Charlie to be in. “Felicia plays a girl named Charlie who is sort of a lowly tech working in one of Dick Roman’s companies”, says Executive Producer Sera Gamble. “She’s an amateur computer hacker and unwittingly gets wrapped up in Sam and Dean’s problems. It’s a classic story of an everyday girl who does not want to be in a whistleblower position.”

Of the episode Robert Singer said, “Charlie gets caught up in something that in her wildest dreams she never thought she would. The boys have to enlist her help and particular expertise and that’s a leviathan, mythology-heavy episode. That episode has a fun, caper element to it.” He also said that while the episode is incredibly pertinent to the season’s big arc, it also has a bit of a spin on the norm.

Is it possible that the computer-savvy lady may turn Leviathan slayer? She does seem to know her way around a sword.

 

Unfortunately, here she is threatening the boys with it, and that’s never a good idea. It also doesn’t last too long!

 

 

A number of the photos that were released for the episode are from Rufus’ cabin and in none of them is Dean very happy. In fact he seems pissed off all episode. Maybe the fact that they are finally going after Roman has ramped up his obsession again. And that works for me. The sooner Roman’s head is on a platter, the better.

We also see two very worried brothers driving in a car (Not the impala again!) and I have to think the scope of what is happening is beginning to weigh on them.

 

I’m sure the current situation of their ghost friend is also a concern of theirs. Bobby’s rage towards Roman starts to affect him in this episode. And, if Bobby wants to go all vengeful on Roman…I say have at it!   Don’t know how effective a ghost would be against a creature that is older than the angels however. I’m guessing his best bet is to keep his cool and bide his time.He supposedly has a plan to keep his anger under control so here’s hoping it works, at least until Roman and his pack are dead or until Dean finds a way to restore him. At any rate that’s the option I hope Dean takes, but he will do what is necessary to help Bobby no matter how hard it is. (And here’s guessing that Bobby’s resolution will be part of the cliffhanger for next season.)

While the CW promos are not too informative as far as the leviathans are concerned, we do get to see some of the levity the episode has to offer.

In the sneak peeks, Charlie has to get past a security guard for access to a restricted area. However batting her eyelashes at men isn’t Charlie’s area of expertise, so Dean steps in to offer Charlie tips on how to flirt.

That in itself is hilarious, but even with Dean’s help, things go anything but smoothly. Of course, it would have gone better if Sam would have stopped laughing!

Charlie does succeed and gets into the restricted area. We see her at a computer terminal downloading info and hope she hasn’t tripped any silent alarms. Aldo hope that is Roman’s computer she is at! Anyway, she talks about her missed opportunity at Goggle, finishes her download, turns to leave and walks right into Dick Roman. So, not good.

Can Dean talk her out of this? If not, at least he and Sam know what’s happening.

Things can’t go good for Charlie after this and we do see her later in a garage scene with bodies, blood, Dick (talking about the world is his dinner plate), and a very frightened Charlie. The final scene on the CHCH promo shows us a very self-confident Roman sitting under a sign reading Dick Roman Enterprises. (Debonair isn’t he? That black gooey, greasy, oily, slime ball! He would look much better without a head.) Here’s hoping the boys wipe that smug look off his face and this episode would be a good time to start!

We also see a large unknown object crashing into the windows on Roman’s building with other bodies lying around. Really hope none of those are Charlie.

However she is hurt at some point in the episode. Thank heavens the boys get to her before she’s dead.

Leaving a very pissed off Dean and Bobby, so I’m guessing Roman wins this time around.

Finally we begin to see what the leviathans have been up to and it’s about time! We only have 4 episodes to go and Roman and the leviathans are supposed to be wrapped up this season. Almost doesn’t seem like there is enough time now.

Of course, what the levies have been up to is not good, certainly not a way to cure cancer, unless eating all the cancer patients is what Roman had in mind. Seem the little devils found a way to harvest humans as a food probably in a way that won’t raise a warning with us until it’s too late. Dean was right, the boys should have been more on the tail of the levies before this. Unfortunately Frank just didn’t have too many leads to give them, but if his computer helps them get closer, maybe his death won’t have been in vain.

Question I have is why Roman doesn’t already have the code. Once a person is eaten, all the information they contain is transferred to the levies. And it’s hard to believe the levies would have killed Frank without eating him if they didn’t have the code. Maybe he is still alive, or worse, he took his own live to protect the boys. That would be sad.

I also don’t understand what information Frank could have had about the brothers that Cass wouldn’t have already known. Hope this is not a red herring and Roman has laid a trap for the boys. Poor Charlie, she would be hung out to dry.

I haven’t seen the episode yet, but I already like Charlie and hope she doesn’t end up dead. I suspect Charlie will have quite a charming personality, especially with Day playing her. She already comes across with lots of spirit and determination in the promos. She’d make the boys a good ally in the future…like maybe s8. And she does have a definite advantage over Dr Badass. She’s not only brilliant, but beautiful as well…and a Star Wars fan to boot! How much better can you get!

John MacCarthy directed the episode and while he has been an assistant director on the series for 14 episodes, this is his directorial debut. He has assisted with such episodes as “Exile on Main Street,” “Time Is on My Side,” and “Mystery Spot.”

Robbie Thompson penned the episode, his third for the series. His other episodes included the excellent “Time after Time,” and the funny “Slash Fiction.” Though new to “Supernatural,” he is not new to TV scripts. He has written episodes for the “Cape”, “Ark,” “Human Target,” and the award winning “Jericho.”
