Stetsons, phoenix and colts, oh my!
[Apologies for the delay on this one – my laptop died (in the middle of studying for final exams) and we had to perform an exorcism on her to get things running again….]
Something Wicked- I think this is my favorite episode from season one. We saw how much Dean had to deal with when he was young. And it had one of the first signs of his sense of responsibility for things he can’t control, which still effects him today. But I was already not loving John and he took a big hit (for me) in this episode.
Hollywood Babylon-My favorite scenes are the Dean’s scenes in this one too. His constantly eating. His fangirling over the B-movie actress and his swagger out of her trailer later. Mostly I love how adaptable he is. Plop him on a movie set this week or in a prison the next and he adapts. Give him another week and he would have been running both.
Monster at the End of the Book- This is one of my favorite episodes EVER. It was such as game changer but also so freaking hilarious. That Fabio book cover. Horrified look at slash fans. And the next scene where Sam starts unbuttoning his shirt and Dean gives him this WTF look. And Chuck -love Chuck. “Horror is one thing but to be forced to live bad writing. If I known it was real I would have given it another pass.” And the laundrymat scene -teh hee. And Dean trying to be all PC to not fight with Sam. Sam’s heartbreaking confession that he’d stop drinking blood if he could and when he denies liking the power and sense of control it gives him, but doesn’t even quite believe himself. AWWW.
Point of No Return- Another of my all time favorites. From first moment to last practically. Love Sammy in this episode. He trying to be all strong and he just keep taking hit after hit from both his brothers but especially Dean. That heartbreaking scene in the panic room, you can tell he’s doing everything he can to hold it together while Dean says he doesn’t believe in him and even after asks how he’s doing. Sob. Poor Sammy. But Sam still tells Dean he has faith in him because he’s still his big brother. Sob harder. Castiel get TWO badass scenes, three if you count when he kicks Dean’s ass. Dean’s snarky lines to Cas. ” And that scene in the beautiful room, the whole conversation taking place between Sam and Dean with just their eyes. And that wink at the end. I have never been so happy to see some get stabbed as when Dean killed Zachariah (loved to hate that guy-reminds me of every corporate douchebag boss I ever had).
Frontierland – Western gear -yummy. Dean’s disillusionment over his authentic western. And the showdown.
These were all just great episodes for so many reasons I won’t go into — too much good going on. Put together, they show how SPN used to hit the mark between humor, sadness, pulling on the heartstrings brother bond, the strength of stand-alones, and how some powerfully move the mytharc along.
I thought PoNR was one of the strongest episodes the show has had (although I admit that when I rewatch it now, I FF through everything Adam — hate that character).
Frontierland and Sam meeting the iconic Samuel Colt and Dean making a legendary kill – awesome. But I loved watching Sam Hennings act, and I thought the guy playing the Phoenix was excellent, too. I enjoyed their parts. (Can I admit that I much prefer the 1940’s gear than the cowboy get-up, though? Yum, yum.)
