Most Wanted Meta!
So in the spirit of fun I started thinking about meta and about what types of episodes I’d really like to see the show attempt. “Changing Channels,†“The Real Ghostbusters,†“Ghostfacers,†and “The French Mistake†kind of played with form, so I thought I’d go through my list of form-meta recommendations. I invite you to add to the list!

I invite you to add to the list!
5. Silent Movie Supernatural
So what would be better than an all silent Supernatural episode? We could get BitchFace Sam (I’m sure Alice has this term copyrighted, but I’m stealing for this list). We could get serious, angsty face Dean as well as sarcastic, eyebrow raising Dean. I’m sure there’s a monster, spirit, or minor demi-god who could take the voices away from our boys, for just 40 minutes of a 45 minute episode, right?
There is precedent. Buffy did it with “Hush,†which to my mind is one of the best episodes of the entire series. So what do you think? Instead of Silent Bob, we could Silent Sam and Dean.
4. Reality Competition TV Supernatural
So the show already nodded to reality television with “Ghostfacers,†but I say we go one step beyond and have an episode that pits the boys against other hunters in a competition to the death! It could be like “The Most Dangerous Game†combined with The Amazing Race. And of course, it’d come down to Sam and Dean and imagine the possibilities!
I even have an episode title suggestion: “Top Hunter.†Right?
3. The Great White Whale of Supernatural Meta – The Musical!
I vote for Rock Opera. I mean, come on, this show is begging for a rock opera. Imagine it – Sam and Dean breaking out into Bohemian Rhapsody. Bobby could do some old school Elvis. We could have some ghosts break out into some Patrick Swayze ballad type song. Oh this would be epic. In fact, this screencap from “Live Free or Twi-Hard†begs to be operatic.
If not Rock Opera, then Broadway. Oh yes, Broadway tunes. That would just be sinful. Dean singing South Pacific tunes. You know you want it, people. You know you do.
2. Cartoon Supernatural!
Yeah, I know, Supernatural has an anime. No, people. I’m talking old school, 1960s-70s 2D Scooby Doo animation. That would so rock. Imagine the Impala like the Mystery Machine. How awesome, right? And I would pay per view a cartoon version of Dean and Sam. And then, oh then, we could get some rocket launching and grenade throwing. It’d save money on effects, right?
Now, if 2D is too archaic, then I’d vote for a “Gears of War†video game type of graphic depiction. But that’d be expensive. So, yeah, Scooby this up, man! Do it!
1. And the number one request: Curb Your Enthusiasm Live Supernatural!
So most of you probably know that Curb Your Enthusiasm is mostly improv, meaning the scripts are basically non-existent. You know where I’m going right? Improv Supernatural but do it live! Oh man, we wouldn’t need a gag reel for the season, would we? Just give Jared and Jensen a scenario and have at it. It’d be brilliant. And if it were live? Oh, you’d have to put an adult warning on it, given that group’s tendency toward inappropriate but it would be so worth it!
Do it live, boys! And do it without the safety net of the script! Again, I’d pay per view that.
So have I missed any? Join in and let me know what you’d like to see go meta in Supernatural land….
Tee hee heeeee. Me likes. I could really get on board with these ideas, especially number 5. Imagine, 42 minutes of just faces….. Silence is golden, baby.
Thanks for this, Bookdal. (Though I must confess, when I saw the title first I thought it said ‘Most Wanted Metal’ and I then thought it was a thread about music. Need to get my eyes tested, again. Sam & Dean in glasses, mmmmm)
Oh, this was a wonderful idea and article. For me, you touched on every one that I’d like to shown. My #1 would be the musical. To hear Jensen sing…WOW…and hear Jared, too. I still laugh every time I hear them both sing that Bon Jovi song, “Wanted Dead or Alive”. Hilarious!
Although a live show would be great too! ER did that a while ago and I really enjoyed it! So, I think it would go well for Supernatural too. 😀
I said on Twitter that I’d love to see an Improv Episode of SPN at a convention. Think of the hilarity that could ensue. Sure, you might start with Jared and Jensen on stage starting it, but what if someone like Richard or Sebastian jump in and crash the whole thing? It’d be hilarious. And amazing.
Hi Bookal
I love your idea’s, especially the Silent Movie (Jensen and Jared can express so much by their facial expressions that a silent movie would be a breeze for them) and the cartoon ‘Scooby’ style (I grew up on the original Scooby Doo).
As for my meta episode how about a Documentary, kind of like the ‘This is Spinal Tap’ Version. A reporter who is a fan of the Supernatural Books does a documentary of the Winchester. He/She could interview the people that the Winchesters had saved and any of their fellow hunters…well those that are still alive.
Love your idea, Karen! A documentary! That’d be such fun!
Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about Curb Your Enthusiasm… but if it’s improvisation, hey, why not?
Liked your idea of the silent movie! And it should be in black and white with piano music as background music. 😆 with all the according camp gestures and make-up!
I am a huge fan of the musical idea! And, please, a wonderfully histrionic version… 😉 (like David Bowie in Labyrinth)
What I thought of yesterday when I was watching a sort-of documentary about comedy week festival in Canada. They have a show called “The Debaters” – two comedians discuss one topic with one being pro, the other contra. It’s improvisation, mostly, and it is such fun.
Perhaps Sam and Dean could discuss the question “Hell was an experience that made me grow” or something as dramatic…
Or… swap meat of a different kind – Sam and Dean wake up in the bodies of real Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony in Egypt,or real Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbing the Mount Everest, or the real Robin Hood and Little John… Sigh. Deranged ideas of a fan’s mind 😆
Cheers, Jas
Wonderful article!
My favorite is silent episode followed by cartoon episode.
I’ve never cared for the musical idea, but when you say ‘rock opera’ it suddenly clicks. I can totally get behind that.
One more idea for the pack: an episode made up of short distinct segments, just various slices of their life as hunters and as themselves.
Oh, definitely the improv episode. I would so watch that. And it would need to be on much later. As you’ve said, these guys can go a little dirty, especially with Sebastian Roché. Bring Balthazar back I say! My second would be the silent film. These two guys can already express so much without words, make it an all silent episode.
Thanks for this. I needed a good laugh after reading some other posts that were getting a little too heavy handed for me.
Thanks for the comments, guys! I have one to add to the list….and I was waiting to see if anyone would suggest it. Crossover, anyone? 🙂
Oh and Jas…yes to the Labyrinth mention! Hell yes! :0
Perhaps a Star Wars-Supernatural crossover. The real Luke and Han and the Supernatural versions of it? 😆 , oh dear, that would be crazy! But, to quote Dean: “Crazy works.” 😉
I never thought about a cross over. Hey maybe they can bring my Supernatural Treehouse of Horror to life. Supernatural meets The Simpsons..hehe
Crossover with Monty Python, most definitely. I can’t believe it hasn’t happened yet, to be honest. How many ready-made monsters are there on that show?
They could hunt the Three Headed Knight.

(Seems Sam is already there. And look, he’s grown a ‘tash for Movember!)
God himself

Or, the rabbit…..

(Might have to leave this one to Sam. You know how Dean feels about our flopped eared friends.)
They could also hunt the vicious chicken of Bristol.
I couldn’t find a more up-to-date picture so there’s a chance Dean has already eaten it. Dean Winchester; Leviathan of the chicken population!
Hilarious! I haven’t thought of this possibility, but, hell, it would be fun!
The vicious chicken of Bristol will give me nightmares… It looks, well, unnatural… 😆
Love the Monty Python crossover Tim.
I also have to agree with Jas on that Bristol Chicken…that is one freaky looking bird. 😮
Where does she find pictures like that?! 😮 Nightmare material!!! Oh, dear…
But the bird’s cute. (Maybe I’m just weird)
That’s what scares me 😆 … At first glance it’s cute…and the longer I look at it, I feel it’s creepy… But, well, that’s what good horror is about, eh? 😉
It looks more like a little demented owl to me!
Awesome, you guys have provoked him. Now look at what he’s after doing
I hope you realise that you have that kitten’s blood and guts all over your hands….
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! The vicious chicken didn’t kill the kitty! No, it didn’t happen! No, no,no! (*Going into denial*)
Sniff!!! 😥
(Evil scientist breaks through: it’s a hilarious picture, though 8) )
1. Crossover SPN and X-Files!
I’ve so wanted to write this fan fiction but do not have the courage yet: Dean and Sam are investigating a rumored powerful psychic kid, fearing that another YED is starting an army. While watching the kid, they become aware of a couple of older FBI agents doing the same, too. Why? Come on, we haven’t had any closure on Mulder, Scully, and their powerkid. Let this be a happy ending or something hopeful for Sam and Dean, too.
2. Supernatural the Musical
There are songs in my iPod that I’ve always thought would be nice to hear in an SPN Musical.
–Taking Chances (Celine Dion) – perfect ‘trying to make it with another hunter or civilian’ song
— No Air (forgot the singers) – love song between Castiel and someone human (if Cas returned)… No, I’m a Sam and Dean woman.
— I’ll Stand by You (heard the Glee version; originally performed by The Pretenders) — “Don’t be ashamed to cry/ Let me see you through / I’ve seen the dark side, too // When the night falls on you / You don’t know what to do / Nothing you confess / Could make me love you less…â€
— The Prayer (Mans Zelmerlow, not the one by Josh Groban)
— The Schoop-Schoop Song (It’s in His Kiss) – could be the Sheriff’s song for Bobby
— Cherry Pie — ah, Dean! Although it would be nice to see Sam got his route.
3. Could this be META? If Bobby dies (Nooooooo!) A group of SPN fans are discussing the latest episode. Some of them are fan fiction writers. Because they believe in the show so much, discussing the idea of Bobby coming back to life really brings him back to life.
THANK YOU MUCH!
For documentary, it’ll be better if they can interview some of the ghosts and monster. Leviathan Live!
Oh, yeah! It’s high time we get the HUNTEDs’ perspectives. MOnster angst, like in Buffy.
Yes, I totally agree with this. A perspective from the monster. It could be like those confessionals during the reality tv shows. I can see it now. Monster: “Sam and Dean Winchester? What can I say? They’re like the big bad wolf in the monster world.”
Love the idea of “Hush” type episode – it was so well done on Buffy. Musical episode would be excellent as well, but the boys have said it would be tricky (I think they reference BTVS as a standard to meet though). If they could do it and keep Dean a “bad singer” JA said he’d be on board for that.
What about, pulling from the Buffy repitoire, an episode like “Superstar” (I think that’s what it called). In this one a minor recurring character casts a spell and becomes, basically, a Superstar – better slayer, super smart, movie star, etc. and it takes a while but eventually Buffy figures out something isn’t quite right.
Oh, there are so many concepts from Buffy that I’d love on Supernatural: the idea that we saw in Normal Again would be chilling and a great chance to bring back both Mary and John Winchester and perhaps Cas (maybe Dr. Cas!), etc.
And of course any crossover that would be feasible; if Buffy was still on the air that’s what I’d go with – other shows would be interesting too, but they’d have to have a SPN-esque quality to the world of that show to really work I think.
Great article- got me thinking for sure!
Fabulous ideas Linda. I’d be thrilled to see all of them. And considering I’m taking my 8 and 10-year old daughters to see Spamalot in January, count me in on the Monty Python meta for sure!!
Other ideas:
1. Why not an episode like the “Moonlighting” episode where everyone speaks like a Dr. Seuss book. Or they could be trapped in Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter. Or cockney slang, with subtitles. Or the Swedish chef with subtitles.
2. There is a great Canadian comedy show called Kids In The Hall where the 5 comedians dress up as women. It’s superbly funny sketch comedy. I’d love to see Sam and Dean as Samantha and Deanna. It could be like “Some like it Hot” with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.
3. Something spacey. I know Ben Edlund was musing on this, but really the boys need to end up on a Spaceship or Star Trek or something. A crossover with Firefly would be amazing!
4. How about a Hawaii Five-O meta. Can you just see the Winchesters with McGarrett and Danno!!!! They could out do each other with the Blue Steel stares!
I’d love to see any of these. Here’s hoping! 😆
I’ve always loved the “Hush” episode of Buffy, so yes, I’d love to see a silent episode. The guys really are amazing at conveying so much with just facial expressions & body language.
As for a crossover, I love the X-Files idea, as well as Hawaii Five-O. With the latter, the guys could get to go to warm & sunny Hawaii, plus what better opportunity for shirtless Winchesters (yup, shallow thoughts here) & a badass fest of Dean Winchester & Steve McGarrett.
Hi Dawn, I think I’m going to have to get out the Buffy dvds, haven’t watched that for, ah, ages…
A Hawaii Five-O crossover? How should a woman survive that? Shirtless Sam, Shirtless Dean and Shirtless McGarrett? I’d need smelling salts at hand, I’m sure 😆
I can’t deny, though, that I am very attracted to the idea….
hehe, Jas
Can I get a Muppet episode?! Don’t you think, Sam, Dean, Castiel etc. would be the most adorable little Muppets?
Get Edlund to write it – he did it for Angel, didn’t he? He could do it for Supernatural, too….. And please make them sell the Muppets, then. I’d give them a home….
Oh yes, I love the Muppets! And we can have Bobby and Rufus (great excuse to bring him back) as the two curmudgeons that call out insults from the balcony! Now that would be worth watching.
please turn sam into a muppet like they did with angel it was awesome and by far my fav angel ep ever so cute my meta ep would be a friday the 13th one the boys go to camp to get someone killing of teens like jason come on do it allready the had a ep called MBV and that sucked. I did hear in season3 eric wanted jason to come in dean’s dream ep but they could not do it.
