Ben Edlund Interview – Comic Con 2011 Press Room
ย
Out of all the interviews I did at Comic Con 2011, this one was my favorite.ย We were fortunate enough to get almost 15 minutes with consulting producer Ben Edlund.ย Iโve always wanted an extended opportunity to pick the brain of this wildly creative genius and man did he not disappoint.ย We even got to see in action how his creative process happens when processing ideas and itโs fascinating.ย I must honestly say, my life if complete now.
I’ll give a mild spoiler warning, but Mr. Edlund didn’t give away too much. ย I do think Sera Gamble threatened harm. ย ๐
(Alice) So whatโs this role of yours this year?ย Youโre consulting producer now? ย
ย
Iโm consulting producer.ย I havenโt noticed much of a difference yet.ย Itโs a job title.ย I asked for that.ย Iโve been on the show for a long time, Iโm going to write probably the same number of scripts, Iโm going to direct one, Iโm involved in the breaking and stuff.ย I wanted to start looking in another direction.ย I just need a little portion of each week to start to think of something else, just for my own satisfaction. ย
ย ย
What might be next for Cas and a possible redemption arc?
ย
The first piece for Cas is obviously heโs our new God.ย His story is about stabilizing his God complex.ย I canโt really talk too much about it because the cliffhanger is so about Cas and so about where his character is going to go and the ramifications of what heโs done.ย In a sense I almost feel like the beginning of the season, the first episode of the next season, is almost the 23rd episode of last season.ย Itโs another crescendo thing .ย So we canโt really talk about it because itโs other big set of shoes dropping.ย Thereโs like 8 shoes dropping in that one.ย I just have to be evasive.ย Ha!
ย
The world has really narrowed down for Sam and Dean and now Cas is off crazy.ย Is there any chance that theyโll pick up a bit more help along the way?
Yes, I think so.ย We need to repopulate so that we can kill more people (laughs).ย Weโve talked about various possible characters.ย We always want to have a ground of people for them to relate to.ย Yeah, new characters will come.ย Theyโre going to have a tough year, Sam and Dean, like they always do.ย Weโre really looking at, how have they been operating all these years, what have their tools been, what have their methods been, how can we take those things and make them difficult for them to use and they have to learn new tricks.ย They have to evolve too.ย This season is about challenging them as hunters.ย Previous seasons have often been about challenging them as brothers or as humans or as men.ย Theyโre going to have some professional difficulties because the world is going to try and eat them again.ย Well that happens every season.
ย
(Alice) Speaking of about directing, apparently you want to do it again.
ย
I do.
ย
(Alice) I thought โThe Man Would Be Kingโ was brilliant.ย Itโs one of the most amazing things Iโve seen.ย
ย
Really?ย Thank you.ย Thatโs neat. ย
ย
(Alice) What was that experience like for you?ย
ย
I found it awful, it was terrifying.ย Really scary.ย That was the second time I directed.ย I directed on โAngelโ many years before and (Iโm like) โThey all know how to do thatโ and I didnโt.ย I didnโt even know the words.ย (laughs).ย But I do know what I want.ย But it was a scary, scary thing.ย Our crew is amazing.ย Usually this happens but itโs really intense with โSupernatural.โย Six years of this crew coalescing into this military unit that does really impossible work up in Vancouver.ย Theyโre so amazing to work with.ย There were days where I could hear the ball drop, I would just drop the ball. (makes crashing noise)ย โI dropped the ball.โย โYou know what, you didnโt.ย We know you did but weโre going to say you didnโt.ย Just keep moving.โย They were great.ย That was the biggest challenge of my year, directing them.ย
ย
Last Comic Con you teased that fairies would be coming up.ย Anything you can tease for this year?
ย
Iโll tell you what I want.ย I donโt that have that one yet that weโve gone, โWeโre definitely doing that,โ but Iโd like to start one here so that people hear about it and then I go โOh yeah, I started that I think we should do it.โย Weโve got to put them on a spaceship this year (everyone laughs).ย Is there a way?ย Remember when Buck Rogers went to the second part of Buck Rogers and they were on The Seeker with the hot guy.ย Something like that.ย Is there a way to get them on a spaceship?ย Thatโs my question to you.
ย
People have been suggesting a musical episode for years.ย
ย
Yes, that true.ย Thatโs a tough one.ย
ย
It is.ย You were kind of into it in โSmile Time.โ
ย
I like to write songs.ย Iโve only written one song for โSupernaturalโ which was the Ghostfacers theme.ย I think my voice is still on the track because I went and sang it for Chris on the soundtrack.ย I feel like Joss Whedon took on one central conceit ofย โHow do you do that?โ and he did it great.ย Thatโs great, magic makes people sing, youโre trashing the musical universe suddenly and I havenโt yet thought of another replacement for that.ย By the way, he almost died doing that. ย
ย
We also talk about the possibility of animation.ย We have yet to figure out how to work that.ย Itโs possible maybe that thereโs the anime people setup we might be able to connect with that somehow.ย I want to make sure we keep doing bizarre things.ย The tentpole oddness that makes the show. ย
ย
Season five was supposed to be the end of the series and now that you guys have continued on is there and end game in mind for what youโre doing now?
There was every chance that season six would be the last season when we started it.ย There was a built in sense, you run two possible end games.ย One has a continuance.ย You just really have to feel it out.ย We have a general shape of an end but it can float forward and you can put more stuff in front of it.ย But those things might change too.ย We had a real plan through Eric up to five.ย Itโs almost a real lesson of life that plans donโt work.ย You donโt know, youโre still alive.ย I think that thereโs something thematically sound in the fact that this story doesnโt end oddly enough.ย These guys cannot die, theyโve died so many times, their torment is not terminable.ย Thereโs something interesting about that.ย (For) the end of this season weโre already discussing how we make it dovetail into an actual piece that ends.ย Thatโs a good question, I donโt have a full answer.ย Letโs talk later.ย ย
ย
(This is where we have the first awkward moment of silence).
ย
How are you enjoying your con?ย
ย
Itโs good.ย I always find it very interesting but very strange.ย This is the weirdest part of it.ย These multiple tables where I go โOh, I canโt say anything.ย Iโm not allowed to tell you anything.ย Okay, thatโs done.โ ย
ย
In general Hellโs been more of the big bad and last season it was purgatory.ย I got the impression that this year Heaven would be the big bad.ย
ย
In a way thatโs perfectly valid.ย One aspect of Heaven is a corrupt God so thatโs kind of bad.ย Heaven as the big bad was actually a big part of season four.ย The fact that Heaven was corrupt and running both sides of the game in a sense, they were ultimately a kind of corporate big bad that we were playing with.ย Again, more vision.ย I promise there will be a big bad to achieve problems. ย
ย
Will we possibly see Heaven again?
ย
Yes, in fact there are visits to Heaven already planned for us to tell various parts of the story. ย And I imagine further into the season weโll probably play more with it.ย Because basically now we have these difference provinces to play with .ย We have Heaven, we have Hell, Purgatory we carved out, we have the veil, which is where ghosts live, we have earth itself.ย Technically we have the fairy dimension, Iโm not sure how that wires in fully but Iโm working on it.ย Alternate timelines, we got a lot of territory weโve got to play with.ย All of those things weโre going to use all the way through.ย Weโre going to milk it. ย
ย
Can you talk about Casโ mindset in the beginning of the season?ย
ย
Yeah, I think so.ย His is one of those stories of absolute power and also you know one of those basic pivotal concepts in the bible which is fives, the issue of five.ย Heโs going to have that unfortunate five days.ย (jokes) Heโs on that show over there.ย Heโs so tall.ย He has to go through all of those pieces.ย I imagine redemption will be part of it but redemption on โSupernaturalโ is a difficult tarnished road.ย So he starts right in the fall of five and then weโll go from there. ย
ย
(Me) What do you think about the criticism that Supernatural has gotten a little too depressing?ย
ย
You know, I think itโs a pretty depressing show (laughs). ย
ย
(Me, joking) And youโre a pretty depressed person?
ย
Iโm melancholy, Iโm not depressed.ย Last season was actually a very dark season.ย That was a ride that people had to go through.ย Everyone had murky character shit going on.ย I think itโs a description of someoneโs preference in taste but I think itโs pretty sad sometimes.ย Theyโve had a horrible hard life.ย I donโt know, I think that โSupernaturalโ is about catharsis and vicarious torment.ย You watch them and thereโs no happy time.ย (lighthearted voice) โOh God, you went to Hell, oh you sure feel bad about your brother, Iโm sorry too.โย Itโs a tough ride.ย I think this season actually for people that think who felt last season was maybe too depressing, itโs going to be depressing also (laughs) but itโs not noir.ย Last season was noir and thatโs a whole commitment to a certain kind of mirth.ย Very few noirs are uplifting.ย That noir date movie that did so well last year (laughs).
ย
(Time for awkward break number two.ย We were given the signal to wrap up, which meant there would be no more questions, but then the escort left.ย So Ben was still left at our table.ย We werenโt going to stop there). ย
ย
(Me) Iโm going to do something for a fan thatโs been on my site for a few years now.ย She has been campaigning for a zombie alligator and knows that you are the guy to do it.ย
ย
Thatโs probably true actually.ย A zombie alligator.ย Iโll give that thought. (pauses) I think about, no, weโll do it. ย
ย
(Me) Where you do come up with a lot the creatures? ย
ย
I donโt know.ย Often something comes into my head that seems so dumb that I almost shouldnโt say it and I get myself thinking.ย I mean, Iโm serious about spaceships.ย
ย
(Me) Weโre serious about watching it. ย
ย
Zombie alligator good because we can do something with taxidermy which we havenโt really touched.ย So weโll start with alligator…(we can see the ideas churning in his head)…Iโll take it.ย There are days Iโll be happy to take whatever so tell your fan thank you.ย
ย
(Me) Will do.ย
ย
(Thereโs still no escort to take him to the next table, so Ben tells us abruptly but humorously โIโm going to go.โย We all thank him while laughing and he goes on to share his wild ideas with another group). ย
ย
Coming up next, Jared Padalecki and Jim Beaver. ย ย

Amazing interview. Ben Edlund is awesome. One of my favorite writers. ๐
Huh. So Ben is melancholy? That’s certainly been the pervasive feel of the show. Wonder if that’s primarily where it comes from? Interesting.
Wonderful interview, thank you Alice.
Another great interview! Hm, the fairy dimension, alternate timelines, spaceships and zombie alligators! Boy, I can feel it. It’s going to be a great season coming up!
You just gotta love this man! What a brilliant mind…
I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do as a director and what his scripts will be about next season.
And Suze (and myself!) will be very, very happy if the zombie alligator truly appears at some point. I have loved the crazy idea of a zombiegator for so long… ah, that would be just wonderful!
The guys’ torment is not terminable? Sniff… As much as I love the drama and the torment of the show, I feel so very sorry sometimes for our heroes, since they always seem to draw the shortest straw.
I do hope that when the show ends (one far, far day ๐ ), that they will get a shot at peace. But something tells me that is not going to happen… again: sniff…
As for melancholy… I think that’s a very creative state of mind. When I look at world literature, the most beautiful and moving poems/works sprang from melancholy minds. And Edlunds scripts are, for me, beautiful, hilarious, but always moving pieces of poetry.
The man does not only look like a poet, he is one…
This was a joy to read, Alice. I’m so jealous that you had the chance of asking him those questions… Thank you for sharing!
Love, Jas
But this is excellent! A Zombie Alligator. A ZOMBIE Alligator? A Zombie ALLIGATOR? How did I not know of this lark before?
As frequent browser/sometime poster of TWFB, I am shocked and appalled that I have thus far missed out on this obviously genius inspiration; surely a Eureka moment to rival that of Archimedes (but with less of the debatable rushing-down-the-street-after-a-bath shenanigans, we presume?)
I would like to sign up immediately to Team Zombie Alligator (TZA). Oh I should check first though: Is it possible to hold simultaneous membership to both the TZA and KSG (The Kumbaya Singing Group?) Please say ’tis so.
Anyway, just though I would take a moment to applaud the creativity of the genius who came up with this idea and Alice for passing it on to Ben, of Edlund fame.
One can only imagine the scene: the Brothers Winchester being chased by a Zombie Alligator, possibly through Bobby’s scrapyard. What could be better than that? Unless, of course the alligator had swallowed an alarm clock first and you could hear it ticking before you saw it. Or if was being chased by a Zombie Yorkie. Or both.
Be still my beating heart.
I reckon our dear Suze (who has been very quiet for a while… miss you, lass!) will be the chairman of Team Zombie Alligator. She was the genius to bring this idea to light…
Oh, my, I’d like to see her face should Edlund really weave the Zombiegator into an episode…
๐ , Jas
Ah, thank you Jas! And Zombiegator is up there with Jefferson Starships as far as nomenclature goes. I hereby propose to rename the TZA as TeamZ – not to be confused with TMZ…(sorry, sorry – a bridge too far?)
And Suze? Thou rocketh.
Well… hehehehehe… ๐ ๐ ๐ the zombiegator was my creation. I think I made it up yesterday ๐
I think Suze and I will have to have a chat about the royalties from all the t-shirt sells!
And, yes, Suze is a rocking lass!
Cheers, Jas
Oh Ben Edlund, you never cease to amaze. ๐ He’s probably my favorite writer for the show, and I cannot wait to see what he has up his sleeve for this season. (And Zombie Alligators? Create Zombie Alligators using ninja stars, then we’ll talk!) ๐
Love Ben Edlund and also love the zombiealligator! That could be another standout episode like “Clap Your Hands”.
Thanks for another great interview Alice. ๐
I really love Ben Edlund and I hope he stays with the show until it ends. I thought he did a great job in his SPN directing debut as well.
