Ode To Ellen and Jo
Ode to Ellen and Jo
It started with a message left on John’s old phone.
One of his possessions, the boys now kept for their own.
The message was from an Ellen, who wanted John to call
Telling him not to be stubborn, that she could help after all.
Sam found the address of where she still might be.
So off the brothers went to see what they could see.
Borrowing a vehicle of Bobby’s, an old minivan.
Dean felt like a Soccer Mom, he was not a happy man.
The address led them to The Roadhouse, which appeared to be close.
But they were soon greeted with guns and a punch to Dean’s nose.
It was then they were introduced to Ellen and her daughter Jo
She and her husband Bill had been friends of John’s, long ago.
Ellen was then informed of John’s resent demise.
‘We think it was the demon’ Sam did sadly surmise.
Ellen knew John was closing on the demon and wanted to lend a hand.
By offering her friend Ash’s services, a MIT genus, we’re to understand.
Looking like a Lynard Skynyrd roadie, still with the mullet trend.
‘All business up front and party in the back’ he would defend.
Given all of John’s documents to help locate the demons positions.
Ash tuned a Laptop into a tracking device for demonic transmissions.
From that time on a friendship was established between them all.
With the brothers stopping by or making a much needed call.
There was even a time when Jo joined the brothers on a case.
However Ellen was not amused, they would soon see it on her face.
And even though things all worked out and the spirit paid its price.
The ride home was well expressed by Foreigner’s ‘Cold as Ice’.
It would be a couple of years later when they would all reunite.
With the Apocalypse in motion, Ellen and Jo joined the fight.
Banning together and being a part of Team Free Will.
With the Colt now in hand, they planned for Lucifer’s kill.
Spending the night at Bobby’s preparing for their mission.
With plenty of beer and whiskey to help in their coalition.
A group photo was taken, upon Bobby making them comply.
‘I’m going to need something to remember your sorry asses by’
Laughing at the optimism, Cas soon ended their moment of mirth.
‘Tomorrow we hunt the Devil. This is our last night on earth’
The next day arrived and the group went out on their mission.
Except for Bobby of course, due to his current condition.
When they arrived in Carthage, Missouri they were soon alerted.
With no cellphone reception and the streets seemingly deserted.
However Castiel could see the many Reapers, standing in wait.
Knowing something was about to happen, he went to investigate.
Meanwhile Ellen, Jo and the brothers scouted the main street.
Fully armed with their rifles, ready to fight and defeat.
They were soon greeted by Meg, who was all snarky and snide.
Along with Hellhounds who stood invisibly by her side.
Upon her command the hounds went in for the kill.
However being invisible, a direct hit was hard to fulfill.
As they made way for cover, Jo took one out, covering Dean’s back.
But this led her to fall victim to another hounds vicious attack.
Dean killed the beast and they took refuge in a hardware store.
But things weren’t looking good for Jo as she slumped on the floor.
While they discussed how to get Jo and Ellen out, Jo set them straight.
That they had a mission to fulfill and there was no room for debate.
Jo advised if they made a bomb, she could give them a head start.
Although Ellen protested, Jo convinced her to take part.
Once the bomb was made, the brother said their goodbyes.
Sam with a squeeze of her hand and his puppy dog eyes.
“See you on the other side, maybe sooner than later”
“Make it later” Jo smiled, hoping Dean would cater.
Dean kissed her forehead and then on the lips.
Then Ellen knelt down to Jo, coming to grips.
And with one look at Ellen, Jo knew in her heart.
That her mother had no intentions to depart.
As no mother could ever let their child die alone.
Even if that child was fully grown.
So as the brothers reluctantly took their leave.
Ellen gave them her last request for them to achieve.
Telling them to “Kick it in the ass. Don’t miss”
The brothers silently agreed, torn at leaving them like this.
When the boys were gone, Ellen unlocked the door.
And join her daughter Jo, sitting quietly on the floor.
As they sat there, the trigger armed with Ellen’s thumb.
Ellen was holding Jo tightly when she finally succumb.
“I will always love you baby” Ellen managed to say.
Then came the anguish and tears of this horrible day.
The Hell Hounds broke in and surrounded their prey.
Ellen spoke her final words without delay.
“You can go straight back to hell you ugly bitch”
And with her last bit of defiance, Ellen triggered the switch.
A proper burial for a hunter has always been to salt and burn.
Which Bobby and the brother tried to do upon their return.
But with nothing more than the group photo at hand.
This was all they could burn to honour their heroic last stand.
Each silently mourning, as there was nothing more they could say.
Except watch with heavy hearts as the photo slowly burned away.
Thank you for this.
For me, the deaths of Jo and Ellen had a greater impact than even Dean’s death at the end of Season Three – their deaths were extremely well-written, and well protrayed.
Indeed, “no mother could ever let their child die alone”.
Thank you CitizenKane2. I too was deeply impacted by the deaths of Ellen and Jo. I still to this day have never been able to rewatch Abandon all Hope since it originally aired. It is just too painful for me.
Thank you Dany.
I’m relieved you getting teary was a good thing. I would hate to think otherwise. Cheers!

I know it will always haunt me.

Oh Karen…
Lovely. Well done. You’re gonna break my heart! The deaths of these two Ladies was one of the most poignant on the show.
Well done in capturing it.
Thank you so much Yvonne. I hope I didn’t cause your heart to break. 😥
