Supernatural Videos: A Picturesque Wander Through You Tube
When Alice invited me to join the team of writers here, she sked me if I could put something together about the vast number of fan made videos and clips available on line. I was more than happy to comply. I wonder if it was her desperate attempt to avoid being bombarded by my latest `finds`? Let me explain, I love Music, it has been the all consuming passion in my life since I was a small child. My life is defined by music, I remember where I was when I first heard a song, what song I heard at specific times in my life, happy or sad. I have certain songs that have and continue to sustain me through the most difficult times, and songs which inspire memories or emotions about individuals, both still in my life and ones no longer here. I also know I am not alone in feeling like this, how many of you now have a song playing in your mind as a memory has just stirred for you too?
When I discovered Supernatural and my obsession began I, like many of you I am sure, searched out all and any information I could find online and I quickly found the video clips on You Tube. This was heaven for me as it meant I could now indulge both of my passions at the same time. This is not to say that there are only music clips as obviously we all pour over the clips from conventions and those featuring interviews and excerpts from episodes, you can view practically any iconic scene and if you want to view your favourite moment, there is a pretty good chance that will be on there too, my own is, it might only be 8 seconds long, but it is there! Primarily here though I am looking at the videos featuring music. There lies another unexpected bonus, I have discovered many wonderful songs and artists, some I am sure would have remained hidden if not for these clips, one of the songs I found would now always be included in my top 5 tracks.
There are thousands and thousands of these clips dedicated to every aspect, character and episode, some are repeated ad nauseum, if you enter “Jensen” or “Dean” and “Eye of The Tiger” today, there are over 1,200 videos of Jensen on the roof of the Impala and I guarantee there will be more added tomorrow. There are new ones daily. Why? I have no idea, re-inventing the wheel?? People often use the same music too, again there are over 1000 featuring “Carry on Wayward Son.” Not that I am knocking that song, I have loved this since its original release, but I do think it shows a certain lack of imagination to use it to illustrate clips.
I started to think about which clips to recommend here and there the problems start. There are just so many! And what type, happy, sad, the plain gratuitous? There is one for literally every occasion, so I decided to just include a general mix, a bit of everything and maybe later look at more specific areas and characters, Supernatural meets Disney anyone? The clips are out there, and they are really good!
This first one is a slight indulgence on my part as it does feature another of my passions, Mumford and Sons, their music and our show does seem to be a match made in heaven. There are many clips utilising their tracks, I even now think of “Little Lion Man” as The “Sam” song, but this uses a track called “I gave you all.” The clip is called “We Carry No Arms” and is made by a very prolific vidder Loki. I recommend searching out her other work, her videos are excellent and could feature here quite a few times.
This song, by 30 Seconds to Mars, has been used on many occasions but does lend itself to our show wonderfully, I really like the editing on this version, “This Is War” by ViDawn.
Sometimes the song choices may not be to everyones taste but the use of images more than compensates. There are few things as cute as this little clip by Anaapenas – “Dean and Sam, you gonna save me or not?”
This beautiful video from Tahirire was made at the end of Season 5 and mainly features images from Swan Song, the song is “Run” by Snow Patrol, it has also been used many times by various vidders but this version uses a less familiar version with a simple backing track of just strings.
No collection would be complete without a mention of The Impala of course, and obviously she has inspired a lot of people to create films celebrating just how beautiful she is. This is my favourite, a story of True Love, one man and his car. A short but lovely clip by hollieciccone set to The Darkness song “I Believe In A Thing Called Love.”
Here is a very recent clip, again by the brilliant Loki using a track which is new to me. “Last Song” by Clogs and Matt Berninger. I think the way she uses close up images here is simply stunning
There are videos celebrating the passions and talents of our beloved boys as here in this tasteful little effort by Lsketch42 featuring the song `I`m Not As Drunk As You Think I am” by Rodney Carrington, or `I`m not as thrunk as you am I dink`.
I find this one very frustrating as I have looked everywhere for this track and cannot find it anywhere else but on this video. It is by JessicaRae24, the song is `It`s alright` by Will Taylor & Strings Attached featuring Sara Hickman. The Clip is actually called `It`s Not Alright` and is very sad but beautiful.
I was not familiar with this song and if I am honest would not chose to be! BUT, I love the images so much I can ignore it, and the words do fit the images so well, it is again the work of Loki. Kate Nash is the artist and the clip is `Mouthwash J2` and it`s adorable.
The last clip is, I admit, pure self indulgence but I cannot resist. It is by SuperfreakSummer and uses Cyndi Lauper`s “True Colours,” tissues needed!
So there are just 10 from hundreds of clips which I could have chosen I hope there is something here that everyone can enjoy. I would love to hear anyone else`s recommendations and hope to be able to share more very soon.
As a footnote a very short but memorable one that never fails to make me smile and is probably very descriptive of these clips.
Thanks for allowing this indulgence,
