Notes From C2E2 – CW Renewals Likely In The Next Month
I come from Chicago with some hopeful news for you Supernatural fans! Yesterday I got to ask Julie Plec, Executive Producer of The Vampire Diaries, some questions in the press room at Chicago’s C2E2 Expo. Early in our conversation, I couldn’t help but ask about her show’s hopes of getting a season three, which as of today is not official yet. Below is a snippet from that conversation:
You guys are still going strong. Still number one (on the CW).
Yep, still number one. Still kicking, still getting people more and more excited. The feedback has been fantastic. Second season is always scary because you never know if they’re still going to like you, are they going to get tired of you, are they going to get over you, but they’ve been just as enthusiastic and I think we’ve been holding our own so it’s good.
And I assume third season is going to happen.
Yeah, it’s not official yet. I don’t want to be cocky about it but I would be kind of like, “What? Are you kidding me?†I’m sure we’ll hear soon, I think they said they’ll do that stuff officially in the next month.
I write for a Supernatural fan site and fans are like, “Where’s our announcement?â€
I know! I’ve been wondering about that stuff for a month and a half actually.
Take what you want from that exchange, but it sounds like fans aren’t the only ones a little surprised by The CW dragging their feet on early renewals. It also sounds like they’re coming. Not that Supernatural has a lot to worry about, but it’s good to know that the announcement is on the way.
Sure, I hear the arguments now, “How do you know Supernatural will get an early renewal?” Well, one reason for Julie Plec’s confidence is because they’re number one on the network. Guess which scripted show is number two? (Don’t say Smallville, the show isn’t returning).
I’m going to have this full interview up soon on TV For The Rest of Us. Stay tuned, for if you’re a The Vampire Diaries fan, Julie reveals some really cool things.
Wooot! There’s an article on Deadline Hollywood today – CW is closing in on Dawn’s replacement – guy named Mark Pedowitz — so maybe the logjam will be broken by that announcement when it comes.
I figured they would be announcing this either at the end of March, Beginning of April… Hopefully sooner rather than later. 😉
We might have a name on who’s gonna take over Dawn Ostroff’s spot. Here is the link to check out..

I got the Variety alert that Mark Pedowitz was interviewing for the job. That seems really suspicious to me. I saw that he was friends with Bruce Rosenthal at Warner Brothers. Rosenthal is a potential guy to take the top Warner Brothers Studios job. I do suspect it’s a chance to climb up that corporate ladder, take over the WBTV president job. Why would anyone with that much skill want to run this piddly network? I guess we’ll see, but if he makes a success of The CW, Warner Brothers won’t take that lightly.
Of course, he may not actually take the job. Negotiations like this fail pretty quickly, especially when not enough money is offered.
The CW supposedly runs at a loss – if he can turn that around, he’ll be gold. Also, I’ve always heard that Dawn was hand picked by Les Moonves and it was the UPN/CBS folks running the show — maybe WB said– “Our turn!”
He was there and I saw him, but I didn’t get to interview him. Too many other things going on! Maybe next time, especially at an SPN con.
To me this sounds great, Alice. Since I like the Vampire Diaries (I am a vampire fan, always have been, and this show grew on me after I was not taken with it at all at first – the German dubbing hugely responsible for that. But after watching it in the original version, I began to like it) I’m glad there probably will be a third season.
I’m not worried about Supernatural. I’m sure that we’ll get another season – hopefully. I’m not in the mood yet to worry about what we are going to do here on our site without this show!
Or, in my private life… I am not ready to part with the Winchesters, as of yet. Though a naughty part of me would love to see the guys in other roles…
Ah, we’ll get a season seven. No doubt.
Cheers, Jas
thank u Alice.. a little relief now 🙂
ohh and m huge huge Vampire Diaries fan here. waiting to read bout cool things Julie revealed.
and i m 100% sure spn and TVD will be renewed. they cant loose top rated shows
I’mk glad to hear they aren’t going to wait until May for the announcement. I really don’t get it though. They know they will be renewing certain shows regardless of the new president, so why not to it? Does holding things off make something better for the network?
I really think that it will be renewed. It’s their #2 show on the network since Smallville won’t be back next year. I think the delay may be a strategic calculation. It’s creating quite a buzz and with the all the attention that the show has been getting lately maybe they’re hopefully that this will generate greater ratings when it comes back with new episodes on April 15th.
