I have started my traditional Supernatural re-watch which I also did a year ago. I have ten years to go in episodes that have made me laugh and cry, seeing the brothers grow. I have felt their loss when people in their lives died and joy when they have had those small moments of happiness in their lives.
The show is about the brothers but as we move along through the years it has turned out to be so much more. Year after year, we have met the extended family the brothers gained along the way. We've experienced the loss of those same family members and mourned with the brothers. Some of the familiar faces still live but it is safe to say that the list is growing smaller and smaller. Sam and Dean are loosing everyone around them and that actually makes me pretty sad.
Through the years we have met Missouri, Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Castiel, Death, Rufus, Frank, Samuel, Anna, Kevin, Charlie, Sarah, Meg and Crowley among others. Even from this short list, only three of them are still alive. I didn't want to end this 10 year tribute on a sad note, though, but rather one of family, trust, loyalty and hope. Being together against the darkness.
So I found this video that focuses on the start, the journey and the end to the story we have now for Sam and Dean. As a bonus there will also be two videos about "the Road So Far", Seasons 1 to 10.
Carry on My Wayward son.

"We Might Fall" by Ryan Star
We should go to sleep now, you should stay the night
I'll be up to watch the world around us live and die
Lying on the grass now, dancing for the stars
Maybe one will look on down and tell us who we are
We might fall, we might fall
We might fall, Hallie, we might fall
We might fall, we might fall
We might fall, Hallie, we might fall
I could join the circus, you could sell your hair
I could learn to walk the line or learn to train the bears
Tell me are you crazy and did you mind the cold?
Tell me are you comfortable if comfortable at all?
We might fall, we might fall
We might fall, Hallie, we might fall
We might fall, we might fall
We might fall, Hallie, we might fall
Now that we are older, I remember you
Reaching out to show me all the things that I must do
Now that we are older, I remember youth
Now that we are close to death and close to finding truth
We might fall, we might fall
We might fall, Hallie, we might fall
We might fall, we might fall
We might fall, Hallie, we might fall
Sha la la, sha la la
Sha la la, hey now
Sha la la, sha la la
Sha la la, hey, we might fall, fall

"Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Ah
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher, but I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man
I hear the voices when I'm dreaming,
I can hear them say
Carry on my wayward son,
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man,
Well, it surely means that I don't know
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean
I set a course for winds of fortune,
But I hear the voices say
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more no!
Carry on,
You will always remember
Carry on,
Nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry,
Don't you cry no more,
No more!
"Carry On Wayward Son" is a progressive rock single recorded by Kansas and written by Kerry Livgren for their 1976 album Leftoverture. In 1977, the song peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their first Top 40 hit.
The 7" single has been certified Gold by the RIAA. This version was a much shorter version of the song, edited down to 3:26, a version that was also the band's only single to chart in the UK, reaching number 51 there. All initial releases of the single had a B-side of "Questions of My Childhood". The song was later re-released on the Kansas compilation albums The Best of Kansas, On the Other Side, The Kansas Boxed Set, The Ultimate Kansas, and Sail On: The 30th Anniversary Collection.
It was also included on the live Kansas albums Two for the Show, Live at the Whisky, King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Kansas, Dust in the Wind, Device, Voice, Drum, and There's Know Place Like Home, along with the DVD companions to Device, Voice, Drum and There's Know Place Like Home. The song is played on every season finale of The CW's Supernatural. This song is 96th on VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs."

In the meantime Sam would have gotten the mothering he didn't even know he was missing, and had a parent figure 'on his side' because he never had it. John used Dean as an example to Sam and Bobby said Dean was his favorite - children recognize these things very easily and it would have grown up with Sam. You can see Sam's belief that Dean is somehow 'better' than him even now (much more now you could say). It would have healed some of that damage in Sam's psyche he isn't really aware is there. He also would have gotten to see a side of Dean that was someone who wasn't always going to come out the winner in any interaction. Dean can't bear to lose face in front of Sam, or to Sam. Missouri would have taken some of that starch out of him.
What I am saying is that the brothers who had Missouri's influence over them couldn't have ended up in the horrible depressing tangle they have been in with each other these past 3 seasons .... the show is THAT much the poorer for her loss.
Also, more prosaically, she wasn't available again when they wanted to film with her....

It's funny you should say that because I was just reading an old interview with Jim Beaver that was done in the middle of season 3 in which he was asked about Bobby's relationship with the brothers. He mentioned that Sam was more of a mystery to Bobby because Bobby hadn't had the "deeply personal moments" with Sam that he'd had with Dean. He attributed this to the lack of scenes between just Sam and Bobby. Sometimes I forget that the kind of isolation of Sam from other recurring characters actually started during Kripke's era. That's one reason the Missouri episode always stood out in my memory because it featured a character who actually seemed closer to Sam. It was just a little less obvious under Kripke, because at least Sam was a multi-dimension al character who was heavily involved in most plots and episodes.
She did play more formidable role in Supernatural: the anime series but that character was slightly different and looked very different.

The anime's first season consists of 22 episodes (they last about 20 minutes). If you are used to the normal 40+ minutes it will feel quite fast. While the storyline covers the Season 1 and 2 of the live-action series, it also includes original content exploring the Winchesters' childhoods and expanding upon secondary characters. Most of the characters have gotten a makeover in the anime. Jared could voice over Sam the whole 22 episodes but Jensen could do the last two due to scheduling reasons (Not the Japanese). The characters of Sam and Dean were also drawn to resemble Jared and Jensen.
Other voice overs were:
Andrew Farrar as Dean Winchester
Harry Standjofski as Bobby Singer
Alain Goulem as John Winchester
Angela Galuppo as Jessica Moore
It is not a children animation/carto on because of the atmosphere that fits Supernatural. Even though they tried to give a western feel to it the monsters and story clearly has Japanese influence. They are really freaky sometimes and some go way over the top. Also even though they were quite strict to keep it "in canon" they also introduced twists like demon possessing a vampire. It has not been shown in the real show or I am not sure even if it's possible but it made me also think about the Darkness and what if it can possess monsters and make them stronger or something?
I bought the bluray but I think DVD has the same specials inside. Jensen and Jared introduced every episode and the story and every episode ended to "Carry On Wayward Son".

Supernatural: the animation trailer
I watched it together with a friend that watches also Supernatural and he said also that it was worth to watch. :)

Maybe you could do an article about it... ;)

I know its been a while since its release but maybe one day. I mean it deserves it. Imagine how well the anime could handle S3 and S4. Oh you'll see a war alright with the brilliant writing and effects of anime, and if Sam drank demon blood in the anime he could nuke a friggin city!
Phew. I don't get to talk about the anime much. That was refreshing

I do wish that too but AS! Supernatural has the tendency to kill all recurring old characters that show up to it again I rather have her alive and well living in the world.
