Walker Roundup Season Four Episode Six: “We All Fall Down”
In the sixth episode of the fourth season of Walker, “We All Fall Down,” the characters each had their chance to fall. But, as the episode showed, one can be right even when they’re wrong, or vice versa. Still, this can have adverse effects, especially in the case of …
Cordell
After weeks together with the kids, he finally starts noticing how odd they’re behaving. And he’s right, there is something going on, but he’s wrong in what it’s about. He has convinced himself it’s because they don’t like the idea of him and Geri getting close. He was so sure of himself that he snapped at the kids when they missed the dinner where he was going to share the news, which was way too reminiscent of the time he snapped at Stella wrongfully about the party last season. It was horrible timing, also, as they were finally willing to open up because they needed him, but he shut them down. He actually doesn’t know how right he is that they’re out of control, but him being wrong as to the why hurt everyone, including …
Geri
It’s never easy to join a family that is already, or in Geri’s case, change one’s position in that family. Considering all the trauma that has happened in the family, it’s understandable that she wants to tread carefully. She doesn’t want to be what comes between Cordi and his children. She also has baggage from her relationship with Hoyt, who never put her first. So, in a scene with her actual baggage, she rightly requests being loved for herself, not for what she can do for Cordell. She’s right, he does want someone to help with the quiet. But she doesn’t fully understand that he’s not trying to use her, he’s asking for help. He’s on a precipice, about to spiral like …
Capt. James
It was odd to see Capt. James, who is normally stable and steady, be so off this episode. Coby did a great job portraying a man who hit rock bottom. The scene where he confesses to Cordell is heartbreaking. He admits that Cordell was right to keep the case from him so long. He is right in recognizing that he’s wrong, that he fell down. Some people never want to admit their wrong, like …
Stella and Auggie
Last season, Stella was helping August get better, she was living on her own, she helped build the horse rescue. It feels like all that growth has been erased, because now she’s making criminally bad decisions and denigrating Auggie when he suggests something reasonable, like telling another adult. She was disturbingly skilled in both conning and abetting Mehar in larceny in order to get information. If Witt’s true purpose is to use Stella and turn her into a criminal, he has succeeded. Cordell’s dictate that they stay home more so they don’t get into trouble came a little too late. So far they have evaded getting caught. But their luck can only last so long, just ask …
Hoyt
The lovable rogue who is missed so much. It was great to see him again, even if it was just in a flashback. The bad boy with a heart of gold. A great friend who comes to aid “Duke” in his time of need. He is still a criminal, even though he feels he is in the right. He is so sweet, though. The scene with Emily’s gravestone was touching and brought tears to eyes. Matt Barr is mesmerizing. So mesmerizing, it’s easy to forget he’s a Prince Charming and not sincere. So when Geri is upset that he makes her once again a pit stop, it’s painful.
This leads to my biggest criticism of the episode. Though the scene with Liam and Ben, where Ben wants to give up his job to be with Liam, is adorably sweet and wonderful, when it’s juxtaposed with the loneliness Cordell feels when Geri leaves for business reasons, it seems like the lesson being relayed is that the only way to be a good partner is to give up what you worked for to be available for your loved one. Even though in Geri’s case it’s a business Cordell and she already share, one that she has already given up other choices for, but few remember that. For a show that’s great with lessons and empowerment, it was a little disappointing.
However, the episode was still incredibly enjoyable. The way Walker is able to mix action, heart, and comedy is always amazing.
