Editor’s Note: In anticipation of Supernatural’s final season resuming on Oct. 8th, The CW has started to rerun several of the initial 13 episodes from season 15 that were originally shown last year and the beginning of this year. To get us all back into the groove of watching and discussing each story, Deb has agreed to once again share her recap reviews of the good, the bad and the random of each episode! Enjoy!
This is how this works: I will give my TOP 5 choices for the Good and The Bad of each episode, PLUS a random fact that may or may not have anything to do with the episode. It depends what I am thinking at that moment! After you read my opinions, I would like to hear your TOP 5 Good/Bad list from the same episode. The point is that every episode must have both good and bad stuff for you, or you are not being honest with yourself. ? “The Bad” stuff might be easier to write when the episode is not to your liking, then other times “The Good” will be easier. The Good/Bad stuff can be silly things – that is alright too!
This will be a good catch up before we all watch the last, unaired episodes. So, if you like, join me in watching the reruns. Hopefully, I can write these recaps for all the remaining episodes. We Got Work to Do!
Supernatural 15.01 “Back and to the Future“
The GOOD
1. Belphegor
2. Night scenes are superb
3. Opening
4. The God wound, title card
5. The old monsters are back
1. Alexander Calvert continued to be amazing even though he needed to jump into new character. Belphegor is a joy to watch through the episode. It is funny how totally different the character is from Jack. It also helps that whatever character Calvert is playing, he has good chemistry with the main cast.
2. I cannot praise enough how marvelous and atmospheric the night scenes were. The woman-in-white car scene is one example: The Impala driving in a dark forest road, the car lights and fog surrounding it, the abandoned red car just waiting to reveal its dark mystery and blood stains. The flashlights and music from the car radio are icing on the cake.
3. I think this season’s opening recap is actually one of the best that the show has had. Sam, Dean and Castiel fighting their way through the “zombies” and gravestones. Castiel carrying Jack’s dead body on his shoulder while graves are exploding, the moonlight lighting their way with the haunting, slow, opening music and last sentence – “from the famous final scene” indeed.
4. Sam’s God wound has a mystery about it. Think of all the possibilities hiding behind it that need to be unraveled. Also, it does make you worry about Sam’s future. I mean, a supernatural gun shot wound from a magical bullet? There is no bullet to take out either. Intriguing.
5. I was VERY surprised that they brought the old monsters back. I mean the Woman in White is already legendary because she was in the pilot, and Bloody Mary was one of the scariest monsters from the first season. What a hit to the gut it surely must have been for Sam and Dean to realize Chuck brought back those cases that they won so long ago. Who else might he have brought back? What about the hint of our Michael being free? Just Chills. But the monsters were a double-edged sword, as you will see later.
The BAD
1. The town folk
2. The old monsters are back, bad execution
3. Daytime is not scary
4. Action seemed off in few places
5. Castiel’s powers are so on/off
1. These were undoubtedly the worst scenes of the first episode. I did not like the acting of the actors nor their characters a lot. The exceptions were the town sheriff and the mother, even though she also had some very weak scenes. The children/teenagers, though! I am sorry but that was just horrible, in my opinion.
2. The old monsters are back, yay! But with bad execution, DOH! Yes, some scenes did work, but others did not. Woman in White, Bloody Mary and the clown John Wayne Gacy all had some good scenes, but mostly seemed silly and weird. The daytime ‘monsters’ and some others just did not work. They were not scary.
3. Like I mentioned before, sunny, and fully lit daytime is not scary. Those scenes did not feel like Supernatural at all which made Sam, Dean and Castiel pop out like daffodils from the scenery. The worst thing was that they felt like they did not belong in the story. Neither did the ghosts. They felt like they were pasted onto the screen.
4. This is no biggie and I think the daytime also contributed to the action scenes’ problems, but some of them were very bad. Specifically, the last one on the street felt very silly and did not have the urgency that it was going for. I counted about ten times when the civilians and Sam would have bitten the dust if it had gone as it should. Cringe is a pretty strong word to use but partly it was that bad.
5. Castiel’s powers were not hard to write in earlier days but for many seasons they have been all over the place. They have been on/off (more or less) so much that it makes my head spin. They should have made him human or just given him diminished powers so that he is not always all powerful. Is it really that hard to write? It really makes me wonder sometimes.
RANDOM Fact
A Mausoleum is an external free-standing building constructed as a monument enclosing the interment space or burial chamber of a deceased person or people. A monument without the interment is a cenotaph. A mausoleum may be considered a type of tomb, or the tomb may be considered to be within the mausoleum. The word mausoleum derives from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (near modern-day Bodrum in Turkey), the grave of King Mausolus, the Persian satrap of Caria, whose large tomb was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Historically, mausolea were, and still may be, large and impressive constructions for a deceased leader or other person of importance. However, smaller mausolea soon became popular with the gentry and nobility in many countries. In the Roman Empire, these were often in necropoles or along roadsides: the via Appia Antica retains the ruins of many private mausolea for miles outside Rome. When Christianity became dominant, mausolea were out of use.
There you have it! Now I am dying to read your choices for Top 10. Remember, anything goes!
