Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections 15.01 “Back and to the Future”
“Everything has to come to an end, sometime.” ― L. Frank Baum, The Marvelous Land of Oz
This is it. The l**t first episode and season premiere. I have been feeling a lot of mixed emotions about the ending (easy word to connect to the article, isn’t it?). I’m happy because of a few things but mostly I have been feeling sad. Denial is the key for me, or pretending nothing is happening. Of course, when the season starts, the finality of everything comes crushing in. I guess I have decided to enjoy the few episodes we still have left, to end things on a high note myself. Watching Supernatural and what has come from it – everything I have experienced – leaves me with many great memories – even these few articles I will still write about the show.
What a long strange trip it has been.
Enjoy the videos!

Now that you’re out of my life
I’m so much better
You thought that I’d be weak without you
But I’m stronger
You thought that I’d be broke without you
But I’m richer
You thought that I’d be sad without you
I laugh harder
You thought I wouldn’t grow without you
Now I’m wiser
Thought that I’d be helpless without you
But I’m smarter
You thought that I’d be stressed without you
But I’m chillin’
You thought I wouldn’t sell without you
Sold 9 million
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m not gon’ give up (What?)
I’m not gon’ stop (What?)
I’m gon’ work harder (What?)
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m gonna make it (What?)
I will survive (What?)
Keep on survivin’ (What?)
Thought I couldn’t breathe without you
I’m inhaling
You thought I couldn’t see without you
Perfect vision
You thought I couldn’t last without you
But I’m lastin’
You thought that I would die without you
But I’m livin’
Thought that I would fail without you
But I’m on top
Thought it would be over by now
But it won’t stop
Thought that I would self destruct
But I’m still here
Even in my years to come
I’m still gon’ be here
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m not gon’ give up (What?)
I’m not gon’ stop (What?)
I’m gon’ work harder (What?)
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m gonna make it (What?)
I will survive (What?)
Keep on survivin’ (What?)
Wishin’ you the best
Pray that you are blessed
Bring much success, no stress, and lots of happiness
(I’m better than that)
I’m not gon’ blast you on the radio
(I’m better than that)
I’m not gon’ lie on you and your family
(I’m better than that)
I’m not gon’ hate on you in the magazines
(I’m better than that)
I’m not gon’ compromise my Christianity
(I’m better than that)
You know I’m not gon’ diss you on the Internet’
Cause my mama taught me better than that
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m not gon’ give up (What?)
I’m not gon’ stop (What?)
I’m gon’ work harder (What?)
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m gonna make it (What?)
I will survive (What?)
Keep on survivin’ (What?)
Oh (oh) oh (oh)
After all of the darkness and sadness
Soon comes happiness
If I surround my self with positive things
I’ll gain prosperity
[4x]
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m not gon’ give up (What?)
I’m not gon’ stop (What?)
I’m gon’ work harder (What?)
I’m a survivor (What?)
I’m gonna make it (What?)
I will survive (What?)
Keep on survivin’ (What?).

Quotes
Dean: So, what? Chuck throws friggin’ zombies at us now?!
Sam: I don’t know if they’re zombies, Dean. I think — I think whenever the souls came up from Hell that they-they just…
Dean: They what? Just jumped into the nearest body?
Dean: Great. Son of a bitch. Chuck. Man, I knew it. I knew He would do something like this. He’s always so squirrelly, you know, with the — with the — the robe and the beard and… the smile that’s, like, half-nice, half “I’m gonna rip your throat out.”
Sam: That’s what He does. He gets bored and-and-and pulls the ripcord. I mean, that’s what He did with Apocalypse World and-and probably with all of them. He moves on, starts another story. But you know what? Good. ‘Cause if He bailed, it’s just us. For the first time. It’s just us.
Dean: And about 3 billion ghosts.
Sam: Yeah, well, what’s one more apocalypse, right? But seriously, if we win — when we win this, God’s gone. There’s no one to screw with us. There’s no more maze. It’s just us. And we’re free.
Dean: So you and me versus every soul in Hell? I like those odds.
Sam: Yeah, me too.
Dean: Well, you know what that means?
Sam: We got work to do.
Trivia and Minutiae
“Back and to the Future” is a reference to the Back to the Future films, as well as the fact that Sam and Dean are once again facing enemies from their past. It may also be a reference to the much-repeated line “back and to the left” from the 1991 film JFK.
The name on the crypt that Sam, Dean, and Castiel take refuge in is “Carver,” a reference to previous Supernatural writer and showrunner, Jeremy Carver.
As with every season, the title card has been updated. Among the images flashing on screen include an angel banishing sigil, an Aquarian Star, a cosmic background, a glowing Samulet, a Hell Ghost, burning angel wings, an iris / rift similar to season 13’s title card, and an inverted pentagram. You can see these images here.
This is the third episode where the “The Road So Far” recap song has continued playing into the start of an episode, after 2.21 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One and 14.01 Stranger in a Strange Land. Unlike those two prior instances, the music in “Back and to the Future” is not diegetic.
Appearing among the Hell Ghosts are Constance Welch aka Woman in White from 1.01 Pilot, Mary Worthington aka Bloody Mary from 1.05 Bloody Mary, and John Wayne Gacy from 14.13 Lebanon.During the closing scene, several ghosts previously defeated by the Winchesters appear including Constance Welch, Mary Worthington, and John Wayne Gacy.
