Top Six Favourite Episodes: Supernatural Season 12
Welcome back to “Top Six Favourite Episodes”, this time for season twelve! These are, still to this day, the nearest and dearest to my heart, my comfort episodes, the ones I go to when I need a laugh or a cry or the comfort of an old friend.
Before you read my list, make your own list of season 12 favourites! It will be fun to compare your unbiased choices (before you are unduly influenced by my memories or picks) to mine. Nightsky reveals her Top 6 season 12 favourites after mine, so you’ll have two WFB staff lists as a comparison!
So without further ado, here’s my list of Season Twelve Favourites! The list is by order of appearance only, as they all are equal in their importance to me.
“Keep Calm and Carry On”
Amara resurrected Mary from the dead.
After some convincing, Mary finally believes that this stranger is her son Dean, and gives him a long awaited hug.
Dean takes some much needed time to catch Mary up.
Dean takes Mary back to the Bunker to meet Sam,
Only to find Castiel instead, who is thankful to find out Dean is alive and well. Cas tells Dean about the mysterious woman taking Sam.
Mary is re-introduced to Baby.
Dean, Cas and Mary go on a search for Sam.
Meanwhile, Sam is being held captive and tortured by…..
…members of the British Men Of Letters, Toni and Ms. Watt. Toni is looking for information on other hunters.
Sam refuses to cooperate and therefore is tortured by being doused in ice cold water….
having his foot burned by a blowtorch.
and even drugged with hallucinogens .
Sam attempts an escape but Toni gets the upper hand ……
…leaving Sam feeling defeated.
“Lotus”
Sam and Dean investigate a murder of a billionaire. They find another team working on the case……
… Cas and Crowley.
Lucifer possesses a Bishop…..
and then the President of the USA.
We learn that the President (now Lucifer) is sleeping with his adviser Kelly, who, unbeknownst to her, has just conceived a Nephilim.
We are finally introduced to The British MOL’s Mr. Ketch, who assists the brothers and gives them a device that will capture Lucifer.
Lucifer is expelled from the President…..
…however Sam and Dean are arrested by the President’s Secret Service.
“First Blood”
Continuing from the previous episode “Lotus”, Sam and Dean are brought to a high security facility…..
… and placed in separate cells.
We then watch a montage of the brothers dealing with their isolation: exercising,
.. their everyday meals,
keeping track of the days incarcerated,
and dealing with the extreme boredom and loneliness.
A unexpected twist! Both brothers are found dead in their cells on the same day.
They found a way to fake their deaths and escape.
Meanwhile, Cas and Mary have been meeting from time from time…
trying to locate the brothers without success……
…until Cas hears from Dean, that they have escaped and that they are in Colorado somewhere. Cas and Mary meet in the general area of where the brothers might be.
Finally they do meet up…
with well deserved hugs.
We find out the brothers had made a deal with Billie. She would help them escape. In turn, a Winchester was to give up their life.
In protection of her sons, Mary offer herself…..
…however, Cas decides to break the deal and kills Billie.
“Regarding Dean”
Dean is chasing a wounded witch, who puts a spell on him, knocking him out.
Dean wakes up with a bunny nibbling beside him.
Dean borrows a phone and contacts Sam to come and get him.
Later, while working on the case, Dean shows signs of losing his memory. He put the car into drive instead of reverse, and even asks ‘Who’s Dean?’
Sam contacts Rowena for help. He learns Dean is under a memory loss spell which will eventually kill him.
Sam puts up Post-Its to help Dean identify things.
Rowena comes to help Sam. She informs him that she needs spell book from the Loughlin family of witches they are hunting.
While Sam goes to get the Grimoire book to help break the spell. Rowena stays to look after Dean while she works on some potions she will need.
Sam gets captured by the witches.
Rowena brings Dean to the witches’ home to find Sam. Rowena and Catriona battle it out.
Dean shoots Catriona with the help of Sam’s post-its.
Rowena is able to reverse the spell.
“Who We Are”
In the previous episode, Mary was brainwashed to kill fellow hunters that didn’t join the BMOL. Ketch and Mary end up trapping the brothers and Toni in the bunker, where the air will run out in a couple of days. The three work together to try to escape the bunker…
…first with a spell and then just trying to break through the wall.
However, after realising the futility of their efforts, they take a break and discuss how they thought they would have gone out with a ‘Blaze of Glory’, Butch Cassidy and Sundance style.
It’s then that Dean thinks of the Grenade launcher.
He finally gets to shoot off his long lost desire. Although he has injured his leg, Dean escapes the bunker and they are able to leave.
They go to Jody’s. Mary had attempted to kill her earlier but Jody was able to get the upper hand. Jody invites a few remaining hunters to her home to warn them of the BMOL’s plans. Sam gives a compelling speech to get them to join the fight. They agree and head out to the BMOL hideout. Dean stays behind to find a way to reach Mary.
Dean and Toni bring Mary back to the bunker. Toni puts Mary into a dream state and then puts Dean into her dream. Dean finds himself in their lives before Mary was killed by Yellow Eyes.
Meanwhile, the hunters arrive at the BMOL HQ. The battle ensues and they take over. Dr. Hess informs them that Lucifer is alive and they need to join the BMOL. Sam passes on joining them and Jody kills Dr. Hess.
Dean finally reaches Mary but is pulled out of the dream state by Ketch. Dean finds that Ketch has killed Toni and the two battle it out. Mary kills Ketch.
Afterwards, as Mary is cleaning up the bunker, Dean and her talk. Mary is scared that Sam will never forgive her. Sam arrives home in time to hear her and tells Mary she will never have to be afraid of him. They hug and then Dean joins in the group hug.
“All Along The Watchtower”
Kelly is getting ready for the birth of her baby Jack in the cottage where she and Castiel have taken refuge. Kelly leaves a message for Jack, as she knows she will not survive the birth.
Crowley resurrects himself and goes…..
… to the aid of the brothers and Mary to find Lucifer and Cas and Kelly.
Meanwhile, Lucifer is also in search of Kelly, to be there for the birth of his son.
In doing so, he kills Rowena.
As Kelly starts labour, a tear in the universe is opened by her baby.
Cas investigates the tear and finds an alternate universe.
The Winchester locate Cas and Kelly and warn them about Lucifer.
Mary helps Kelly with her labour.
Lucifer shows up at the cottage.
They all trick Lucifer into the alternate universe……
..where they set up a spell to keep him there. However, the last part of the spell requires a sacrifice…
…which Crowley volunteers to be.
As the brothers and Castiel make their way back to their universe, Lucifer stabs Castiel and kills him.
Then as Lucifer attempts to come back through, Mary punches him back in, but not until he grabs hold of her and pulls her through with him. The tear then closes.
As a shocked Dean kneels over Castiel’s body…
Sam goes to Kelly, to find she has passed on.
Sam looks for the infant Jack, only to find out he’s a very scary young adult.
Those are my top favourites for season twelve! As promised, here are Nightsky’s “Top 6 Favourite Episodes” for season twelve, in order of preference:
- “Who We Are”
- “All Along the Watchtower”
- “Regarding Dean”
- “Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox”
- “Mama Mia”
- “First Blood”
Nightsky: For me, season 12 wasn’t as strong as the prior two seasons. “Who We Are”, “All Along the Watchtower” and “Regarding Dean” are in my top 50 episodes for the series, but then there is a big gap in emotional connection before “Asa Fox”. It made my top 100 but only barely. The next two episodes in my top 6 didn’t make the very discerning top 100 countdown but are still favorite episodes. After that, nothing jumps to mind as a must rewatch. I’ll be curious to see your lists! I admit that I need to rewatch season 12 to refresh my memory. Maybe I need to reorder or include something I forgot.
