Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections “Who We Are”
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.” — George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
The name of the episode, “Who We Are”, made me choose identity as the theme for this article. Mary and her boys are the best example of identity and who they are. In this episode, the past came to the forefront.
What happened to Mary in these last few episodes mirrored a lot of Sam’s journey, like with a yellow eyed Nephilim/devil staring at Sam in a nursery. Sam also at one time ran away from his family. Mary was feeling guilty about her deal, like actually both of her boys have felt at one time or another. Sam felt he was not clean, “a monster” because of the demon blood and Mary felt like she was the monster to her boys because of what she did. Mary trusted a higher power that turned out to be bad but she finally saw the light and fought against it like Sam and Dean have done. She was tortured and brainwashed and turned into a killing machine (Soulless Sam, Demon Dean, Samifer). She had a wound on her hand like Sam did to show her reality when it caused her pain like Sam when he had those hallucinations. She had a wall up in her mind, hiding in the “perfect” life. Sam was hiding from hell torture behind a similar wall and Dean lived in a world in his mind that was “perfect” in 2.20 What Is and What Should Never Be. Mary’s journey mirrors a lot of the journey both boys have had.
I did like that Mary is a complicated person and that she means the world to her boys, like it should be. Even with her flaws. It is funny that the part of Mary’s journey that is similar to the boys was shown in one season, while it took 12 seasons to tell the boys’ stories.
As we had a huge two episode finale, both fan video articles will have extra videos on them, but that was not the only reason. All the videos that were new and concerned the last two episodes were pretty awesome! You can see the rest of the videos below before quotes. The first two videos focus on Dean’s speech and the history of Sam, Mary and him. The third and fourth videos combine the penultimate and the finale.

The Lightning Strike by Snow Patrol
[I – What If This Storm Ends?]
What if this storm ends?
And I don’t see you
As you are now
Ever again
The perfect halo
Of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against
The planet’s last dance
Just for a minute
The silver forked sky
Lit you up like a star
That I will follow
Now it’s found us
Like I have found you
I don’t want to run
Just overwhelm me
What if this storm ends?
And leaves us nothing
Except a memory
A distant echo
I want pinned down
I want unsettled
Rattle cage after cage
Until my blood boils
I want to see you
As you are now
Every single day
That I am living
Painted in flames
All peeling thunder
Be the lightning in me
That strikes relentless
[II – The Sunlight Through The Flags]
From here the caravans are kids toys
And I can hold them all in my palm
I watch the sea creep round the corner
It connects the dots from here to you
The sunlight burning through the loose flags
Painted high on white church walls
I chase my blood from brain to thumped heart
Until I’m out of breath for trying
Worry not everything is sound
This is the safest place you’ve found
The only noise beating out is ours
Lacing our tea from honey jars
These accidents of faith and nature
They tend to stick in the spokes of you
But every now and then the trend bucks
And you’re repaired by more than glue
Worry not everything is sound
This is the safest place you’ve found
The only noise beating out is ours
Lacing our tea from honey jars
Why don’t you rest your fragile bones
A minute ago you looked alone
Stop waving your arms you’re safe and dry
Breathe in and drink up the winter sky
[III – Daybreak]
Slowly the day breaks apart in our hands
And soft hallelujahs flow in from the church
The one on the corner you said frightened you
It was too dark and too large to find your soul in
Something was bound to go right sometime today
All these broken pieces fit together to make a perfect picture of us
It got cold and then dark so suddenly and rained
It rained so hard the two of us were the only thing
That we could see for miles and miles
And in the middle of the flood I felt my worth
When you held onto me like I was your little life raft
Please know that you were mine as well
Drops of water hit the ground like God’s own tears
And spread out into shapes like
Salad bowls and basins and buckets for bailing out the flood
As motionless cars rust on driveways and curbs
You take off your raincoat and stretch out your arms
We both laugh out loud and surrender to it
The sheer force of sky and the cold magnet Earth
Snow Patrol are a Northern Irish/Scottish rock band formed in 1993, consisting of Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), Nathan Connolly (guitar, backing vocals), Paul Wilson (bass guitar, backing vocals), Jonny Quinn (drums), and Johnny McDaid (piano, guitar, backing vocals). Initially an indie rock band, the group rose to prominence in the early-mid 2000s as part of the post-Britpop movement.
The group were founded at the University of Dundee in 1993 by Lightbody, Michael Morrison, and Mark McClelland as Shrug. After briefly using the name Polar Bear and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Quinn to its line-up. Their first three records, the EP Starfighter Pilot (1997), and the studio albums Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It’s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), were commercially unsuccessful and were released by the independent labels Electric Honey and Jeepster. The band signed on to the major record label Polydor Records in 2002.
Connolly joined Snow Patrol in 2002, and after their major label debut, Final Straw, the following year, the group rose to national fame. The album was certified 5× platinum in the UK and eventually sold over 3 million copies worldwide. Their next studio album, Eyes Open (2006), and its hit single, “Chasing Cars”, propelled the band to greater international fame. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling British album of the year, selling over 6 million copies worldwide. In 2008, the band released their fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns; then, in 2009, they released their first compilation album, Up to Now; and, in 2011, released their sixth studio album, Fallen Empires.
During the course of their career, Snow Patrol have won seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and have been nominated for six Brit Awards. Since the release of Final Straw, the band have sold over 13 million albums worldwide.

Quotes:
Sam: Of course yeah, so my brother and I we, uh. No you know what. I called you here, because people, um, our people are being slaughtered and we’re next. The British Men of Letters, they came here because they thought they could do out job better than we could. And they helped us with their flashy gear and their tech, most of you had the good sense to turn them down. They said they wanted the same thing we wanted, you know? A world free of monsters. That’s not what they really wanted. They want control, they wanna live in a world where they can sit in some office and decide who gets to live and who gets to die. And they’ve killed people, they’ve killed innocent people, just because they got in the way. They think the ends justify the means, but we know better. We know hunting isn’t just about killing. It’s about doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. So we go by our gut, right? We play by our own rules. And that scares them, that’s why they want us dead, because we’re the one thing they can’t control.
Roy: So what do you want from us?
Sam: I want you to follow me. Take the fight to them, to hit them before they hit us. We go in fast and hard and we fight. And we beat them down until they give up or until they’re dead. Look they are well trained and well armed, some of us might not make it back. But we will win, we will take down the bad guys, because that’s what we do. They’re scared of us, yeah, good. They should be.
Dean: You come back.
Sam: Promise.
Dean: Bitch.
Sam: Jerk.
Dean: I hate you… You lied to me. I was a kid. You promised you’d keep me safe, and then you make a deal with Azazel. Yeah, it saved Dad’s life, but I’ll tell you something else that happened, because on November 2, 1983 old Yellow-Eyes came waltzing into Sammy’s room because of your deal. You left us. Alone. Because Dad was just a shell. His perfect wife, gone. Our perfect Mom, the perfect family, it was gone. And I-I had to be more than just a brother. I had to be a father, and I had to be a mother. To keep him safe. And that wasn’t fair. And I couldn’t do it. And you wanna know what that was like? They killed the girl that he loved, he got possessed by Lucifer. They tortured him in Hell and he lost his soul. His soul. All because of you. All of it was because of you… I hate you. I hate you, and I love you. ‘Cause I can’t-I can’t help it, you’re my Mom. And I understand. Because I have made deals to save the ones I love, more than once. I forgive you. I forgive you. For all of it. Everything. On the other side of this, we can start over, okay? You, me, Sam. We can get it right this time. But I need you to fight, right now. I need you to fight. I need-I need you to look at me, I need you to really look at me and see me. Mom, I need you to see me. Please.

Minutiae:
Sam: Is this how you pictured it? The end?
Dean: You know it’s not. I always thought we’d go out like Butch and Sundance style. Blaze of glory.
Referencing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, where in the film, Butch and Sundance charged headlong, guns blazing towards the Bolivian army. Jensen and Jared have also spoken about their desire to possibly end the series with Sam and Dean dying in a “blaze of glory” at conventions.
“Blaze of Glory” is also a song by Bon Jovi that was referenced before in 11.11 Into the Mystic.
Dean: Okay, beautiful. Yippee ki-yay mother-
Yippee ki-yay motherfucker is the catch phrase of John McClane (played by Bruce Willis) in the Die Hard movies. Dean also uses this line in 6.18 Frontierland after killing Elias Finch with the Colt.
