Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”
“Castiel: Archangels are fierce. They’re absolute. They’re Heaven’s most terrifying weapon.
Dean: And these Archangels, they’re tied to Prophets?
Castiel: Yes.
Dean: So if a Prophet was in the same room…as a demon…
Castiel: Then the most fearsome wrath of Heaven would rain down on that demon.”
The idea for videos for this week comes from Sam and Lucifer. Their scenes from the last episode were out of the park gorgeous. They included the story of the main archangels/brothers on the show plus information on christian lore. The fan video is again remarkable. The music and scenes flow together. I have watched it already like ten times. Lucifer’s torment of Sam is well portrayed but I like the ending where Sam is having none of it.
Lucifer
Later Christian tradition came to use the Latin word for “morning star”, lucifer, as a proper name for the devil; as he was before his fall. Lucifer was once the most beautiful angel in all of existence. God loved him best of all his brothers, even more than Michael. Lucifer was proud. When humanity was created, he was unwilling to accept its place in God’s favor. And when God commanded all of Heaven to love his new children more than himself, Lucifer refused. Lucifer pleaded: “Father, I can’t. These humans are flawed. Murderous!” After persistent disobedience, Lucifer was cast out of Heaven.
Lucifer: Why would I want to destroy this stunning thing? Beautiful in a trillion different ways. The last perfect handiwork of God. Ever hear the story of how I fell from grace? […] You know why God cast me down? Because I loved him more than anything. And then God created… you. The little hairless apes. And then he asked all of us to bow down before you: to love you more than him. And I said; “Father, I can’t.” I said, “These human beings are flawed. Murderous.” And for that, God had Michael cast me into Hell. Now tell me: does the punishment fit the crime? Especially when I was right. Look what six billion of you have done to this thing. And how many of you blamed me for it?
– 5.04 The End
Lucifer: The Horsemen’s rings? The magic keys to my Cage? Ring a bell? Come on, Sam. I’ve never lied to you. You could at least pay me the same respect. It’s okay. I’m not mad. A wrestling match inside your noggin… I like the idea. Just you and me, one round, no tricks. You win, you jump in the hole. I win… Well, then I win. What do you say, Sam? A fiddle of gold against your soul says I’m better than you.
– 5.22 Swan Song
Lucifer is truly the big bad in Supernatural. No matter which vessel he used, the menace and threat were always present, and how he acts adds just adds to the effect. He is one of the things Sam and Dean are both afraid of. Sam has felt his malice, presence and revenge first hand. Dean almost got killed and lost his brother to Lucifer, which Dean himself said he almost didn’t survive. Lucifer is not a threat taken lightly and we as audience have always felt it too.
Michael (“who is like God?”)
Michael sees himself as a good and loyal son to his father, and that matters most to him. He professes love for Lucifer, his younger brother, but insists that he is only serving his father by destroying his brother. He seems to think himself magnanimous when he promises to leave Dean whole, not catatonic, after serving as a vessel.
Michael: Lucifer defied our father, and he betrayed me, but still, I don’t want this any more than you would want to kill Sam. You know, my brother… I practically raised him. I took care of him in a way most people could never understand, and I still love him. But I am going to kill him, because it is right, and I have to.
Dean: What, because God says so?
Michael: Yes. From the beginning, he knew this was how it was going to end.
Dean: And you’re just going to do whatever God says?
Michael: Yes, because I am a good son.– 5.13 The Song Remains the Same
We didn’t get to experience Michael that well but he had the same feeling around him as Lucifer, even though Michael was regarded as the “good guy”. To Winchesters and to humans he was not thought of as the good guy, though, because what he wanted would have killed a lot of people and taken away free will.
Gabriel (“God is my strength”)
Gabriel is an angel who typically serves as a messenger sent from God to certain people. As the Trickster (Loki), Gabriel behaved in a mischievous manner, enjoying his games. He embraced a hedonistic lifestyle, including the “sweet tooth” for which that type of demi-god was known. Even after revealing himself to be an angel, he still used misdirection to achieve his goals and to protect himself. He is often sarcastic. Gabriel’s manner is the most human of any of the angels, perhaps because of his long sojourn on earth, and he has an appreciation of what humans can achieve.
Gabriel: Shut your cake hole. You don’t know anything about my family. I love my Father, my brothers. Love them. But watching them turn on each other? Tear at each other’s throats? I couldn’t bear it! Okay? So I left. And now it’s happening all over again.
– 5.08 Changing Channels
Who wouldn’t love Gabriel? He is the only archangel and one of the few angels I see that is/was actually good in heart. He actually gives a crap even if he had weird way of showing it. I liked the twist that Trickster/Loki was actually Gabriel. It meant that he couldn’t be killed like Tricksters were usually killed. I still hope he is not dead and he pulled a fast one against his older brother.
Raphael (“It is God who heals”, “God Heals”, “God, Please Heal”)
Raphael is a serious, traditionally minded angel who has lost faith in God and is weary of his duties.
Father Reynolds: I call upon the archangel Raphael, master of the air, to make open the way. Let the fire of the Holy Spirit now descend, that this being might be awakened to the world beyond.
– 2.13 Houses of the Holy
Raphael: We’re tired. We just want it to be over. We just want… paradise.
Dean: So what, God dies and makes you the boss, and you think you can do whatever you want?
Raphael: Yes! And whatever we want, we get!– 5.03 Free to Be You and Me
Raphael is the least remembered archangel of the four. He was threatening too and he did have a strong presence but maybe because he was very subtle in his actions and sometimes acted like a stuck up noble he wasn’t memorable for me. Raphael was the only one of the archangels that used a woman vessel so kudos for that.
Seven Archangels
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest reference to a system of seven archangels as a group appears to be in Enoch I (the Book of Enoch) which is not part of the Jewish Canon but is prevalent in the Judaic tradition, where they are named as Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Remiel and Saraqael. While this book today is non-canonical in most Christian Churches, it was explicitly quoted in the New Testament (Letter of Jude 1:14-15) and by many of the early Church Fathers. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church to this day regards it to be canonical.
In the late 5th to early 6th century, Pseudo-Dionysius gives them as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Chamuel, Jophiel, and Zadkiel.
The earliest Christian mention is by Pope Saint Gregory I who lists them as Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel (or Anael), Simiel, Oriphiel and Raguel. A later reference to seven archangels would appear in an 8th or 9th century talisman attributed to Auriolus, a “servant of God” in north-western Spain. He issues a prayer to “all you patriarchs Michael, Gabriel, Cecitiel, Oriel, Raphael, Ananiel, Marmoniel (“who hold the clouds in your hands”)
Guido Reni’s Archangel Michael Trampling Satan, 1636.
Archangels in current church traditions
The Catholic Church recognizes three archangels, the three mentioned in its canon of Scripture: Gabriel and Michael, mentioned in the New Testament, and Raphael, mentioned in the book of Tobit, where he is described as “one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord”, a phrase recalled in Revelation 8:2-6.

Some strands of the Eastern Orthodox Church, exemplified in the Orthodox Slavonic Bible (Ostrog Bible, Elizabeth Bible, and later consequently Russian Synodal Bible), recognize as authoritative also 2 Esdras, which mentions Uriel. Yet the Eastern Orthodox Church accepts only Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
As well as Uriel, the Book of Enoch, not regarded as canonical by any of these Christian churches, mentions (chapter 21) Raguel, Sariel, and Jerahmeel, while other apocryphal sources give instead the names Izidkiel, Hanael, and Kepharel.
In the Coptic Orthodox tradition the seven archangels are named as Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Suriel, Zadakiel, Sarathiel, and Ananiel.
In Anglican and Episcopal tradition, there are three or four archangels in its calendar for September 29 feast for St. Michael and All Angels (also called Michaelmas: namely Gabriel, Michael and Raphael), and often, Uriel.

Castle Of Glass by Linkin Park
Take me down to the river bend
Take me down to the fighting end
Wash the poison from off my skin
Show me how to be whole again
Fly me up on a silver wing
Past the black where the sirens sing
Warm me up in a nova’s glow
And drop me down to the dream below
‘Cause I’m only a crack in this castle of glass
Hardly anything there for you to see
For you to see
Bring me home in a blinding dream,
Through the secrets that I have seen
Wash the sorrow from off my skin
And show me how to be whole again
‘Cause I’m only a crack in this castle of glass
Hardly anything there for you to see
For you to see
‘Cause I’m only a crack in this castle of glass
Hardly anything else I need to be
‘Cause I’m only a crack in this castle of glass
Hardly anything there for you to see
For you to see
For you to see

Quotes:
Lucifer: Well, that leads me to my next question. Where’s the big burrito himself? Where’s God in all of this?
Sam: All current indications of his presence, are that there are no current indications of his presence.
Lucifer: What? Caught the fun bus out of town. Figures.
Dean: What was that?
Amara: The future. The inevitable result of our first meeting, what you’ve been feeling since that moment. What we both felt, that we’re bonded. You’re the one who set me free.
Dean: No, that was an accident.
Amara: It was destiny. You bore the Mark, I am the original Mark. You and I will be together.
Dean: No, no that’s not gonna happen.
Amara: It’s so simple Dean, we will become one. Why wouldn’t you want that?

Which of the archangels are your favorite? What did you think about the song and video? Share your thoughts below.
Nice article Lilah. I enjoyed all the videos. I think I like the Linkin Park one best. I appreciate the work you put into researching all your themes. Thanks
Thanks! Sometimes the idea just goes with the flow and I like it. I learn at the same time something new while I pile these up. The first was my favorite too. Have watched it many times already. 🙂

As Leah said you do put alot into this article and I loved reading all the biblical articles. This next sentence was interesting —– So does this mean there maybe another 3 archangels that we havn’t seen yet ??
In the Coptic Orthodox tradition the seven archangels are named as Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Suriel, Zadakiel, Sarathiel, and Ananiel.
Could be interesting new characters to introduce we could use a new archangel since Michael. Raphael & Gabriel are or maybe dead mmmmmmmm :o:o:o:o Thank you
PS I also enjoyed the first video x Linken Park You don’t get many videos on Sam and this one was well put togeather
Glad you love my articles. Sometimes the idea grows and I have more information to find about it like now. I don’t think they will introduce more than the archangels we already have because all four we have had already have been so personal and known for years. I don’t say it won’t happen though. It would be a new direction to the lore, but they have not been even mentioned before so it would be a huuuuuge hiccup. Thanks for your thoughts! 🙂

Ah, Lilah. Thank you for the present of the Sam/Lucifer video. A whole video of my favorite character and my favorite SPN guest star ever- it’s like Christmas came early!
I do have to disagree with you a bit about Gabriel, however. I love the character, but I don’t know about him having a good heart. He hurt or killed a lot of people with a great deal of zest and creativity (and I admit it was often quite funny), so even though he ultimately decided to stand with humans against heaven, I don’t think he was such a nice fellow. Which is perhaps why I enjoyed the character so much!
It is actually funny. I thought it would be easier to find a fan video about Sam and Lucifer but it wasn’t. I am glad that the one I found was so good. Most of the time it would be Lucifer or Samifer (Sam playing Lucifer) but not about both of them and showing their story so to speak. So I am happy I found this. And I know what you mean about Gabriel. He did kill people but remember what they said about the Trickster? He did it only to bullies, wicked people etc. Although I don’t think they deserved to be killed for it. Let’s make a compromise, her was a bad/good guy! 😀
– Lilah
Does it mean that something is wrong with me if my favorite scenes are anytime Sam is being tortured?? Maybe it’s Jared’ s fault for being that good at selling his mental/physical pain. I know in real life, I’m not good at expressing emotions, so this show lets me feel all the feels I’m afraid of in real life. Thanks for sharing these videos. I miss Zachariah, he was a great villain.
People watch the show in different reasons and it also effects people in different ways. So there is not really wrong way to watch the show but you can choose how to act from it. In good ways or bad and I have seen both. I am glad it helps you. That is one of the best ways. And I have a love/hate relationship with Zachariah. If you compare to the angels we have now I would take him any day back. I share the talent of the fans with pleasure. 🙂
– Lilah
You’re not alone with the fondness for tortured Sam 😀
