Interview with Showrunners and Cast of Supernatural on Season 11 Updated!
Just a few hours before the season 11 premier Hollywood Reporter and EW have posted interviews about season 11 and the Big Bad for the season.
Jeremy Carver, Andrew Dabb, Jensen, Jared, Misha and Mark sat down and talked about what is ahead for this season.
In the past, the long-running CW series has relied on urban legends and stories from the Bible for inspiration for every villain, from monsters of the week to season-long Big Bads. But 10 years later, executive producer Jeremy Carver wanted to throw everything they knew out the window and start fresh. This season, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) will find themselves facing an unknown entity, The Darkness, and not having a single idea where to start when it comes to defeating it.
Jeremy Carver
Some of the most exciting parts, I can’t really talk about yet,” Carver says with a laugh. “Last season, we made a real concerted effort to focus on smaller, personal stories and a lot of great stuff came out of it. While the character relationships are still there this season, with the release of The Darkness, the stakes are going to feel much, much higher, not just for the boys, but for the demons in hell and the angels in heaven. It excites us to confront this issue of what you do when you have a big bad that pretty much everyone wants gone but nobody knows how to deal with.”
Jared Padalecki
“We are dealing with a force that predates even God,” Padalecki tells THR. “So we’re all out of our league here, in true Supernatural form.”
Misha Collins
Largely, Cas is going to be uniting with the boys against this common enemy, The Darkness,” Misha Collins tells THR. “When Cas finds out what it is that they’re dealing with, it’s kind of an ‘Oh, shit!’ moment, because he previously thought that The Darkness was just a scary story that angels told one another at bed time
Andrew Dabb
“The Darkness is really a monolithic bad guy for us,” Dabb tells THR. “She will have a particularly strong point of view that will come through and it’s something that we can grow and develop over time into a fully-realized character.
Jensen Ackles
Teaming up to figure out what The Darkness is, what it wants, and how to defeat it is the boys’ best chance of survival. We’re taking the show back to its roots, and it feels good.”
Mark Sheppard
“Crowley was about to die by the hands of Cas, and it does not look good for him, does it?” Sheppard tells THR. “The situation is pretty bad. We’ll pick up with that right away. If Crowley doesn’t make it out alive, it’s kind of a wussy way to go. I’d rather him have a much more noble death.”
Jared and Jensen sat down an talked with EW about the upcoming season.
“Luckily the Men of Letters library didn’t get destroyed by the Stynes at the end of season 10 so Sam still will look into the books,” Jared Padalecki said.
Jensen added
“They’re going to have to turn a lot to angels and the demons because they’re the only ones that have ever heard of this thing,” Ackles said. “Because of that, that’s going to involve a lot of Castiel and a lot more of Crowley and all of their people and it should be interesting.”

********spoiler post*********So the Darkness is a she? Hmm not sure how I feel about that. Nothing against female bad guys but I flash back to Mother of All. 🙁 I was hoping it was more of an evil force not personified. Somehow evil is more scary when it isn’t.
Didn’t we already know that? I was a little underwhelmed when I read that earlier. I guess we will have a few evil ***** to deal with this year.
Did we? I guess I missed it. I know it was a fear I had for much of the hiatus. Lilah said it was spilled at CC.
Agreed. I would have liked TheD!!!! to be an unformed, non representational foe that can take any shape and enter a human at will, like a mist. Then each person who’s ‘infected’ becomes TheD!!! in that moment. Much more menacing a thing if it could threaten Sam and Dean and even Crowley or Cas.

And Meg, and Lilith, and Ruby and Mother and Abadon… and that’s just the more regular players. It’s been done before. Have there been more female big bads on this show than male ones? Yellow Eyes, Lucifer and Dick are the only ones I can think of.
True E, I just thought she (MoA) was a good example of a build up and lame follow through. I thought some of the female demons were pretty good along the way. I have to admit that I thought Yellow Eyes and Lucifer were the best at being menacing.
(sorry Wednesday ;))
I guess we can add Metatron to the men big bad list, but Rowena needs to be added to the female list. Yes, my two faves are yellow eyes and luci.
