How Supernatural Ruined My Life
Before everybody takes out their guns to virtually shoot me, let me first clear up that the heading above is just an irony…but it did make you reach your guns, didn’t it? I have always voiced my love for this show. This article is another way to demonstrate my love for it. This article is about how this show has ruined my life and how glad I am that it did.
Supernatural has actually positioned itself, in terms for priorities, just after my friends and family. I am absolutely obsessed by it, even it means completely. Never before this show had I thought that I could be so consumed by any show but here I am three years down the line from when I first started watching the show wrapped in the bubble of the most awesomest show ever.
Supernatural now forms a major part of my life. When I am not watching the show, I am thinking about what will happen next or going through the tweets and articles written by this wonderful fandom. Every time I see an episode or some spoiler, it is usually accompanied by shrieks or some comments that mostly make sense to me but earns me some worried some looks from my siblings & parents questioning whether we share the same DNA or not. Now with the passing time, even they have accepted how crazy I am for this show and have not pestered me for some psychological test.
Being a fan girl is tough and it is much more difficult in Eastern countries. I live in India and for the last ten years American TV shows have made way into our homes very efficiently. All the US TV shows are broadcasted in India and some are even premiered here but let’s face it – fan-girling will never be at the same level as it is in western countries. The chances of Jared and Jensen coming to India along with other cast members is next to impossible and the chance of me going to attend some con in the US or Europe is unthinkable. But, and I think other fan girls from eastern countries will agree with me, that doesn’t stop us from gushing over our favourite show and stars.
Every SPN related con or contest happens mostly in the western countries and so our chances of participating in all those things are next to nothing. Every time there are any collectibles from the show or the cast, I so wish to buy it but I know I can’t and that makes me a little heartbroken. When I see other people buying it and sharing the stories related with it, though, I actually feel happy for them and through them. It makes me feel really happy to see all these people working together to make Jared & Jensen’s charity campaign, along with the other campaigns, a success. This shows how strongly we are bound together through this show.
For SPN cons I actually live vicariously through this wonderful fandom. I actually become a twitter maniac during the con-time, waking up at the wee hours to catch the live-tweeting of the con. I have always thanked this wonderful fandom for providing us with all things Supernatural whether it is about the episode, or the cons, or any interview that is related to cast and crew. Let me take this opportunity to say this to all those people who live tweet or upload videos or post gifs on tumblr, THANK YOU so much for all that you do. You all make fans like us smile with all your updates. We might not be physically present at the cons but we do get to see Jared hug Jensen at almost every con, Jensen’s magical singing at almost every con now, the famous karaoke nights, through you. We do our fangirling through you and though to many people it might not mean much but to me it means a lot.
There is no reason for people to upload theses videos and they can keep it for their own personal use but they don’t. They upload it so that people like us, who can’t afford to attend a con, are not devoid of the joy that we get after seeing our favourite stars. (Side Note: I absolutely love the way this fandom covers the Comic-Con panel. I can’t love you enough for that – you are terrific during Comic-Con. You can really get an entry for fastest tweeters in the world… J)
Supernatural is the reason I became so actively involved in social media. I started watching Supernatural in the latter half of 2011. It was around the same time that Jared joined twitter. So after the first two episodes when I became obsessed with the show I started Googling all the SPN realted news and came to know about Jared joining Twitter, so I joined Twitter to follow Jared. While Jared’s account was the first that I followed, @WinFamBusiness was the second account that I followed. It was like I struck gold, with this site and its Twitter account!
For days I ventured in this website, reading and digging out all the episode reviews and metas and catching up with all the past years of the show. Then I became an avid follower of this website and have never looked back since then. I opened up to the social media due to Supernatural and am proud to say that I am a part of such a wonderful fandom, where we cry together, laugh together, celebrate together, understand each other and can be crazy together. This fandom is a family not related by blood but by the love for this awesome show that binds fans from all over the world. I am not shy of interacting with big wigs of this fandom who have met Jared and Jensen, know the show in and out and are pro, and I know it’s geeky but whenever my article gets published on this website or someone is kind enough to answer my queries it really makes me happy.
Supernatural fandom is one of the strongest fandoms in the history of television and no one can beat us anywhere, whether it is Tumblr or Twitter or Facebook or blogs. Where there is a media, there is SPN fandom. It is kind of like digital omnipresence. Sure there are certain issues that plague this fandom sometimes but, well, which family doesn’t have issues? Still, no matter what, we are there for each other and that is what counts.
So this is how Supernatural ruined my life – It ruined my life with the love for these awesome brothers who break my heart every single time with their love for each other. It ruined my real as well as social life and got me hooked to this wonderful digital world of Supernatural. It ruined my life from the love from this wonderful fandom which I am extremely grateful to be a part of. It ruined my life for the better and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Editor’s Note: The WFB loves publishing fan’s stories, especially from different areas of the world. The SPNFamily truly is global! Does any of this fan’s experience sound familiar to you? Please welcome our writer and let her know she is not alone in her love of Supernatural!
Hi GW thank you for sharing your story! I know you are not the only person from India who posts / has posted on here and it is great to see how far across the world the fandom goes!
I also discovered the show, the WFB, the fandom and made friends pretty much in that order 😀 It has been great fun for me and got me through a tough period when I was trying to finish college. My one remaining thing to do is I would like to go to a con. However up until now they have been too expensive for me and now it looks like they might be pricing themselves beyond even my better circumstances – so don’t feel so much like you are alone in not being able to participate in a con, even those of us closer to the action rely on the kindness of cell-phone users and sneaky videos 😀
Hi eilf,
Thank you so much for your comment. It really means a lot. I know I am not alone and that is why I wrote this article. I know many people will relate to this. I know that it is practically impossible for me to go to cons but hey a girl can still dream right..!! But that doesn’t mean that I miss out on the convention fun.. Twitter and youtube fill that gap and I am so thankful for the fans who upload the con videos..!! I pray and wish that you attend atleast one con.. 🙂
Hi Saumya (now that I have your name) thank you for that! If I do ever get to go I will be sure to take some photos (or even video) to share.
Hi Saumya,
I agree with you.It is kind of impossible to go to these cons for me.And jared and Jensen coming to India is as you said next to impossible. While I am not active on twitter..my facebook also lays dormant for long stretch.I am not a very social media person. So for Con experience I go to youtube…Its fun (and i am slightly jealous of my fellow fans who attend cons.)
I have also introduced a couple who are my friends to supernatural. She is a Sam fan and he a Dean fan.
Thanks for sharing your feelings Saumya! I agree with everything you said and I exactly know how you feel because I’m Persian and live in middle east!but as you said there’s nothing that can stop us from being part of this amazing family and enjoy every moment of watching the show and convention videos and reading about great experiences of meeting Jensen and Jared from our friends all over the world!
So as you said Thank you for sharing your excitement with us SPNFAMILY and thank you Supernatural staff for creating such amazing series that we live with everyday!
Hey Saumja,
Thank you so much for your article. I live in Germany, we’re still at season 8 I think. The maine tv network kicked it out anf now I have to watch it on the internet. I never be able to go to a convention because they will never come to Germany and I can’t affort a ticket or travel to London or France.
WFB helps me to kep nyself updated on SN , to watch some videos read some articles etc. It’s just great!
SN ruined my life because I had to learn english again. Last time I read or wrote in english was nearly 30 years ago in school so gues how old I ‘m now:p
My english is still bad but I understand most of the things now even the Episodes in tv! Hearing it in the original sound is so much better than in german because the syncro is soooo bad. All the jokes are so badly translated anf the voices…oh god!
The fandom here in Germany is not soooo big and getting informationd about SN anf the actors is really difficult. So it’s just great to have this website here!
It’s GREAT to meet other people here so I’m staying here waiting for more infos:D
Hi!!! I’m so happy you’re German! I studied German at school (20 years ago, so I’m not that young, too 😉 ) and I had the pleasure to come to your beautiful country a few times. Now it’s almost impossible for me to travel and I truly miss Germany! I’m from Italy and we’re still in season 8, too. I also watch the new episodes on the internet. Yeah, this website is really awesome. We have a lot to be grateful for!!! 🙂
Thank you Kiran!
Thank you for your kind words and nice to meet you! I’ve been to Italy onlce but it was a beautifull trip! See you around!
Hi Saumya
I enjoyed reading your letter, India sounds so far away – here in Australia I too can feel isolated from all the SPN happenings Barely a day goes by that I don’t check face book WFB or blogs or utube looking for any little news on my Boys. Whether it be Jensen & Jared or Dean & Sam. I don’t have anyone to share this wonderful fandom and show with and at times it makes me sad, I would love to sit with a good friend and have a Supernatural Marathon it would be fantastic. I also find being 54yrs old and Loving this show and fandom can for me be a little embarresing because people that I may mention it to look at me very strangely and I think maybe I have a sickness. So I’m a closet FAN and LOVER of SPN. Cons are expensive and meeting the boys is out of my price range as well, but I have my phone in my pocket and watch for all the twitter excitment and I am so GRATEFUL to the fans that post it for us, Anyway welcome you have come to the best place for all things Supernatural Jenny xxoo
Hey Jen, now as I am replying to you all that I think about is that even though we are worlds apart the only thing that is tying us together is the love for this show and it is through this amazing show that I’ve talked to so many people from across the world. The love we share for this show and this family is what makes this fandom so special. Thank you so much for commenting and am glad that you liked it. XOXO 🙂

I grew up on anime and still watch it. The last time I dedicated myself to watching anything live action in 1999’ish! I distanced myself from shows on TV; their plot and such not to my taste. I became enthralled by the amazing story telling of anime. Then one day last year I was searching for anime werewolves on Youtube and found “Supernatural: Moonlight” (Thats the anime version of Heart). I watched bits of it and became curious and later watched the SPN anime. Months later my curiosity led me to check out the live action. It wasn’t until Home (with Sam’s powers becoming apparent) that I became very curious and started watching two episodes a day, then three (and twice I watched 6 in a day). It was interesting to see an expanded story line and from there I became hooked.
To think me having shunned live action in favour of anime could become as interested once again in live action. I never thought I’d become so engrossed in it that I’d be making videos and writing fanfics.
One thing I couldn’t decide on is if I prefer the live action or anime. I love them equally both. However if it wasn’t for the anime I would never have discovered, let alone watched the live action. I just wish they’d release another anime season!
Hi!!! 🙂 I loved reading about you! Which part of India are you from? I have many friends from Jharkhand. I live in Italy and I became a SPN fan during summer 2012. None of my friends shares this passion with me and therefore I became involved in social media, too! I’d like to thank all the fantastic fans who post videos and articles and con reports. They’re really amazing and allow me to join the family! I agree with everything you wrote and I thank you for sharing!! Lots of love and a big hug!!! (p.s.: My nickname is actually my favorite Indian name) 😉
Hey Kiran, to answer your question though I am from Bihar I am currently residing in Gujarat. Thank you so much for liking this article and frankly when I read your name and the country where you are residing I was confused but now I am jealous I hope I can come to Italy too atleast once. I know lots of fans share the same sentiment and that is what motivated me to write the article. i am glad you liked it. Lots of hugs and love to you too.. !! ;):)
Hey Saumya!
Amen to all of that! Well, I am from India too and I know exactly what you mean. I am not social media savvy and have posted just once on this site in support of Jared but boy am I glad to atleast indirectly be a part of this fandom. Its not everyday you find a series that makes its fans invest themselves so deeply in it and a cast and crew that returns that love manifold by not seeing us as just TRP boosters but as individual souls that care as much about the characters and the people behind them as they do. As for the bond between us, SPN is one heck of a strong link and it will prevail regardless of issues. Isn’t that the underlying message of the show?!
Blessed are we to have become atleast a tiny thread in this bond. There is no way I can travel anywhere so for those who upload videos of cons and for those who get to interact with the cast and crew, God Bless and Thanks!
Love ya all!
Hey.. glad to know that you are from India too. Which part are you from? and don’t worry this site is one stop shop for all things supernatural. Thank you so much for liking this srticle and if you don’t mind me suggesting I would suggest you to become active on social media just for Supernatural you will have great fun, trust me on that front. God bless to you too.. XOXO 🙂
