Interview with Jeremy Carver on coming stories on Supernatural
The interviews are coming fast and furious Jeremy Carver has an interview with TV Line about Dean, Sam and the rest of the season.
Supernatural Boss Talks Dean and Sam’s ‘Cold War,’ Castiel’s Angelic ‘Burden’ and More
Brrr, is that a frost sweeping through Supernatural‘s Men of Letters bunker? With Dean and Sam giving each other an epic cold shoulder lately, tensions are high between the Winchesters and neither is willing to budge, executive producer Jeremy Carver… despite what seems like an irreparable rift, the EP has an optimistic outlook on the brothers’ bond, which is “even deeper than either of them would actually believe,” he says.
He goes on to talk about Cas, The Mark of Cain, the angel war and more here on TV Line http://tvline.com/2014/03/18/supernatural-season-9-spoilers-dean-sam-cold-war-mark-of-cain/
I know he infuriates a lot of people, but I love Jeremy Carver’s ability to dodge the questions. Bottom line, start watching tonight and find out. Sounds like the brothers are going to learn more about doing things apart before coming together. I’m okay with that as long as they stop the melodramatic speeches with each other about what happened. I’m over it.
Sorry guys, but I still believe in the Carver. I just wish he had some better writers, that’s all.
I’m with you on this one. I’m excited by the episode but it’s tempered by my knowledge of who the writers are. I haven’t always liked those two
Although I did once state that if someone tightened the reins on them a bit more, they might turn out to be an okay writing team..
I’m sorry but this part of the interview is horrible to me :/
TVLINE | Dean and Sam have been spending a lot of time away from each other this season, going off on cases on their own. And even when they’re together, they’re separate in a way, because of that cold war. What kind of new aspects has that allowed you to explore with the characters?

The boys, for nine years, have been pretty much inseparable in that it’s always about each other. This year, we’ve started to explore – we’ve done it in the last couple years, I would say – this idea of Sam saying, “Dean, you’re afraid of being alone.” We’re really putting them in more instances of not just being alone, but with other people in their world.

You’ve seen Dean more with Crowley. You’ve seen Sam more with Castiel. They’re growing in a way that… finally they’re forced to go out on their own a little bit more, and they start to develop new friendships. They’re not in each other’s rice bowl, as it were, all the time. They’re starting to develop independent relationships. There’s a change going on. There’s a maturation. “Your friends don’t necessarily have to be my friends, etc.”

I love that Sam is everything to Dean and vice versa. Sam and Dean who want to save each other and will risk themselves because the thought of being the one left behind is worse, don’t mind spending all their time together, choose each other over others etc. It makes them different and compelling. I think it’s safe to say Carver is intent on changing all that.
I think he says later in the interview that the brothers are going to find their bond goes deeper than even they thought. If they have relationships outside of each other (and hasn’t Dean since Castiel and Sam with Ruby) that doesn’t mean that the brothers will no longer have a bond or interact with each other. I thought he meant the brothers world would be expanded to explore the relationship between two men in their 30’s who will always love their brother no matter what. Sorry I am with the J’s on this no conflict would be boring for them and for I would assume many fans. Jared and Jensen seem to be very excited for the show in a way that looks like they feel it could go on. I am enjoying the ride.
I agree that conflict is essential to any show but I prefer character moments like Dean in All Hell Breaks Loose over conflict about how Sam and Dean need to make their own friends so they can be “mature”.
I just can’t help but remember that Carver wrote Mystery Spot. Sam and Dean were so wrapped up around each other that they were even brushing their teeth together. But then Gabriel of course had his big message about how you have to let go etc. Maybe Gabriel was always Carver’s voice.
AAGGGHHH! that man is such an infuriating tease. I can just see him laughing about his answers. 😀
I get why he’s like that. He wants us to watch the show. Can’t be giving away spoilers, but still.
I do believe Carver has an endgame here with the brothers. I do trust he’s got a direction and he’s heading there, no matter what.
Plus I’m totally psyched about Dean’s mytharc this season. He’s now in a position of dealing with the supernatural in the way Sam always had to ,up close and deeply personal. I’m eager to see how he handles it as Sam didn’t always handle it with a lot of grace (bless his heart.)
I’ve noticed Carver is “mirroring” (or ripping off”, depending no your POV) S4 and S5 a lot, but trying to emphasize that the brothers both handle things differently than they used to. S4 had them with separate “friends” as well- Cas for Dean, which at the time was baddish (remember, Cas was supposed to also be tricking Dean, and only bailed on that at the last moment), Ruby for Sam (really bad). Before and after that, the brothers had many friends outside of themselves, and even interacted separately with them on occasion. But I think what Carver is getting at is making the brothers more secure in their relationship- so they both know and understand that having other relationships won’t “get between them.” Amelia and Benny both played up that fear in both brothers- Dean thought Sam “ditched him for a girl,” Sam was overtly jealous of Benny. Many of the issues they do have stem from insecurity- Dean thinking Sam doesn’t love him, Sam thinking Dean doesn’t trust him.
I am interested in “deeper than even they know.” It’s almost a given at this point that Sam is going to “be Colette” and pull out a brotherly love save for Dean, but I do wonder what he means by that?
Just to further clarify my post. If Carver is smart, he’s not going for having the brothers “separate” or work/be apart more. If he’s smart, what he’s going for is having them remain very close, but dropping the more destructive aspects of that. So it will come out to the brothers still joined at the hip, for instance, but more because they actually want to be/like to be, and less because either of them feels they NEED to stay that close for whatever reason (insecurity, protectiveness, obligation, what have you.) I wrote elsewhere once that a good way to go would be less about “breaking” their connection but more having both brothers understand that their connection is immutable, regardless of whether they agree on things or not, and regardless of where each brother is and what they’re both doing.
Liking this comment very much. Thank you.
I like the dysfunction in Sam and Dean and their relationship. I dislike that the “toxic co-dependency” label is now used as a weapon against them. Sam and Dean need to get better but I don’t want it to come from turning to other people. I hope they go somewhat back to more of the early seasons dynamic.
Lol last post tonight I promise. I just also wanted to add that part of the “joined-at-the-hip-ness” was always logistics, which grew into habit. For most of their lives the brothers have been in the Impala together, in motel rooms together, working on cases together, even relaxing and socializing together due to their isolation and sharing all the same friends (i.e. either they’re both hanging out with Bobby or whoever, or Dean is desperate to have some fun and Sam is the only person he knows in a 250 mile radius)! I like the MoL bunker has evolved that- they have a home base now, and as grown-ass men, they want separate rooms at least!
There is literally *no one* in my life with whom I want that level of togetherness. My bf and I came close to that when I was working from home and he was a student, and we almost killed each other :p. With one of my brothers? Dead before the week is out.
