The WFB Spoilery Lite/Speculative Preview: Supernatural 9.15 “#Thinman”
Tonight’s episode # Thinman brings back the Ghostfacers. It is their first appearance since It’s a Terrible Life in season four.
Here’s what we know.
THE GHOSTFACERS RETURN — A teenage girl (guest star Ali Webb) is killed and the final selfie she took before the attack shows a ghostly figure in the background. Looking for something to keep them busy, Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) head to Washington to find the ghost. While the two interview the girl’s mother, Betty (guest star Maria Marlow), they are surprised when she starts talking about cold spots and fritzing. When they ask her about bringing up paranormal signs, Betty replies that the “supernaturalists” who called earlier brought it up. Enter Harry (Travis Wester) and Ed (guest star A.J. Buckley), the famous supernaturalists. Jeannot Szwarc directed the episode written by Jenny Klein (916).
We have the CW promo
And we actually have the CHCH promo
We have a sneak peek
This episode was filmed out of order, although I don’t know if that was because they were working around schedules or if this just got switched for other reasons. In any case this sounds as it it could be another standalone episode. Historically the Ghostfacers have been somewhat light hearted although those episodes can be dark as well. This season even the episodes that look as though they will be lighter have still led to some controversial conversations between Sam and Dean. An interview with Travis Wester and A.J. Buckley mentions that there is often tragedy in their episodes so that may be an indication that this will have darker overtones.
We only have a few hours before we find out.
hmm… a second ghost related episode in a row? That’s a little unusual, isn’t it? It’s always been hit or miss with the Ghostfacers; sometimes they’re funny, other times they just annoy the crap out of me.

I have to admit that the Ghostfacers “annoy the crap out of me” all the time. I have never been a fan of theirs and have not missed them since their last appearance in Season 4. At least the boys will be there though so that is the upside.

I am going to have a very hard time watching A.J. Buckley since I am going to watch Justified first. His character on that show is psycho crazy and not in the sweet nerdy way. But I have always enjoyed the Ghostfacers. And the brothers are still together so that is another plus.

I always enjoy seeing the Ghostfacers. It is funny watching them get in over their heads by trying to be cool and brave and then seeing Dean and Sam bail them out. Now boys, it isn,t nice to mock the afflicted. 😀

I like the Ghostfacers…they’re always good for a laugh. It does concern me though that this was either filmed out of order, or the order of the episodes has been changed. Generally, if the order has been changed, it’s often not a good sign. I actually now connect, ‘changed episode order’ with ‘crappily written episode with a multitude of problems that needed lots of revision’. Maybe I am being too harsh? or too cynical? or too pessimistic? I hope I’m wrong.

E as I noted one of the Ghostfacers is on another show so maybe it was due to scheduling that it was filmed out of order.

OMG! The Ghostfacers are so annoying! I’m watching the episode and I keep praying that the brothers will punch one of them really ,really hard. In the face.

Holy anvils batman. Not much subtlety going on here. Hmmm, who are the ghostfacers a mirror for? Gee, I’m not sure I can guess….. at least we get some Sam perspective, (not from Sam of course, but at least his perspective) clunky as it may be.

OK – I don’t know what happened there or what they could possibly have been thinking when they wrote this episode. Good for Jensen and Jared for doing the best they could with that material. I am going to chalk this up to everyone completely missing the dart board once in a while, pretend it never happened, and look forward to next week. (I do hope though that maybe I just missed something here, and maybe the talented reviewers on this site will make me reconsider. If not – bring on next week.)

Percy, did you see it? OMG, I hope you loved this ep as much as I did. I am OVER THE MOON with happiness right now. I literally said “Aww” several times, especially with the childhood reminisce.
BEST EP OF THE SEASON.

Hi Grace,
I don’t disagree with you at all; its was a really clunky episode with THE most awkward and obvious dialog! I guess I am just sad that such a much needed perspective, Sam’s perspective, the one about lying and trickery and being hurt by those you love, an element crucial to the balance in the conflict between Sam and Dean, was done in such a poorly written way. It’s just too bad, because now everyone will ignore or disregard the message because the vehicle in which that message was delivered was so bad.

I don’t know it wasn’t the best ep of SPN but it certainly wasn’t the worst. I think most fans got the message (how could you not) that the Sam and Dean conflict is complicated and maybe Dean did need to be hit over the head with an anvil. The one scene that saved the ep for me was Batman and Superman. I know it was another obvious plot point of how much Dean loves his brother, but I can’t get the image out of my head of little 9 year old Dean in a panic pedaling as fast as he can to get 5 year old Sam to the ER. That whole scene, I thought Jared and Jensen killed it. I might not watch the whole episode again but I will watch that scene.

I am with you guys on this one. My biggest issue was the writing. I expect more from this sow. It wasn’t particularly fun or cute. I appreciate what they were TRYING to do and maybe in the hands of a more talented writer this might have been good. It just wasn’t IMO.

Oh dear, I meant ” expect more from this show” not sow!! Jeez that just sounded nasty. I am unhappy with the writing, but not that unhappy! 😀

leah d It was kind of a weird episode. Some of the scenes were well written and some were, well to put it nicely not. Jenny Klein’s writing is just inconsistent. I almost feel like the scenes between the brothers were written by someone else (JC maybe). Maybe it is just a testament to the incredible acting skills of the J’s.

@15 Cheryl142 I agree. I thought this episode was very badly written in some parts, far too heavy handed, and the villain was prettty easy to figure out. Neverthe less, I loved this particular episode. I really like it, but I’m not entirely certain why. Maybe a few of the reviewers can clarify things for me.
I know I didn’t like Sam constantly receiving the message that he should just go ahead and forgive Dean because the situation is a little more complicated than simple forgiveness (and a waste of all this angst the writers have put us through.) But my consolation is that Dean is also getting a few messages, loud and clear about consequences.
Next weeks episode looks like a lot of fun.
And Yay! the brothers didn’t get conked on the head this week. They got tased instead. The writers are being really daring with that change-up. 😆
On the other hand, although I like the Ghostfacers okay, I stil wish the villains had hit them both in the head a couple more times. If for no other reason then to disabuse them of the notion that what they do is alright.
Is it just me or was anyone else creeped out by Dean’s knifework in this episode. He killed a human being, didn’t even bat an eyelash. Its been very subtle but Dean’s knifework in the last few episodes has been …noticeably different. MoC, maybe?

You know I just watched the episode again (if I don’t care for an ep I do try to watch again to see if I missed something) and I will have to say I liked it a whole lot better. There was some foreshadowing for the brothers that could mean that this “complication” between them could go either way. I got it the first time around but the silent interaction between Sam and Dean was almost like they were afraid of the road they were traveling right now. I get the feeling that they both think that things have now gone too far and there is no going back. There isn’t going to be Sam and Dean 5 and 9 best friends for life. I think it scares both of them.

Hi Cheryl, I noticed the exact same thing. There was one scene toward the end, when the bad guys are running around, that I found really funny and snappy, and was struck by how NOT like the rest of the episode that one scene sounded. I actually thought it sounded just like something JC would write, and wonder if this episode had to have some wood shedding and revision done. Either that, or you’re right that Jenny Klein is terribly inconsistent. It’s too bad really, as this show needs some female input, but this was just plain bad, beyond obvious, and somewhat like a high school script writing class. Poor Jenny, I feel for her, and maybe she’ll get better, but she’s no Sera Gamble, Katherine Humphries or Rael Tucker.

Alright, I get that Sam and Dean’s current relationship is “complicated”. Yes, Dean lied to Sam and Sam is still pissed and they’re both acting like children who need to realize how much they really love and need each other and find a way to work this out. Sure, Ed and Harry’s current situation is an analogy for Sam and Dean’s. The part that I don’t understand is why the writer(s) felt the need to smack us upside the head with a 2 x 4 to make that point. Supernatural fans are not that dense, so there was no need to so blatantly overstate the obvious. That being said, I do hope that this signals the opportunity for our guys to open up and really communicate instead of firing off cheap bitchy shots and walking off in a huff.
