“The Famous Final Scene” by Bob Seger – Stream It Here
I grew up in the Detroit area. Bob Seger is somewhat of a god in that town because he’s a native son (Ann Arbor, close enough). Anyway, he put out some monster albums in the 1970’s and 80’s and has a score of hits that have grown iconic over the years. Most of those iconic tunes can be found on iTunes.
One of those songs NOT available on iTunes though is easily one of my personal favorites of mine, the closing track to his classic album “Stranger in Town.” The song is called “The Famous Final Scene.” I grew to love the song in the late 70’s/early 80’s because of a Detroit DJ, Arthur Penhallow. He absolutely loved this song and played it often, even though it was never among the so called “greatest hits” list.
“The Famous Final Scene” was featured on last night’s “Supernatural.” Anyone who’s followed the site in the last few years knows how much I kept bringing up how perfect this song would be for a montage on “Supernatural.” Well, they finally found the perfect scene to do it, and I’m actually teary thinking about how this day finally came!
What aired in the episode though is only the first verse of what is a heart-wrenching, bittersweet song about saying goodbye. The song is five minutes long, and should be enjoyed in it’s entirety. After waiting for years for iTunes to carry the song, and my only current source of the song being my ALBUM of “Stranger In Town,” my hubby bought me the CD for Christmas. So, I’m very proud to say, I can share “The Famous Final Scene” with you all right here. Sadly I cannot offer it for download since that’s kind of illegal, but I’ll stream it here for your pleasure. At very least you can enjoy the whole song and perhaps feel more of that gorgeous pain that was eating Dean Winchester alive.

The song is beautiful and it does sound like it was made for Supernatural.

OMG. You are so right Alice. This song was meant for Supernatural. I got so teary eyed listening to this. I closed my eyes and went from the opening scene in 9.10 to so many other scenes from other seasons. What a beautiful video montage it would make. Too bad I’m not that talented. Has anyone done one before to this song? If not I hope they do now. Thanks so much.
Depending on how the show ever ends this might just be the perfect song for that. 🙁

Geez Alice, are you trying to rip out my heart? I adore Bob Seger and get all gooey when they use it on the Supernatural–I think this music is the most perfect fit for this show. That scene was really the best part of the episode for me!

Somehow the lyrics calls up what Osric said in his post.

I’m a U of M grad from the early ’80’s myself so Bob Seger is PERFECTION in my book. I loved that they used this song. Personally I think the lyrics are where Dean’s head is at although I could see application to Kevin.
What’s great is the song had the gravitas the scene needed. Kevin’s death is huge and it needs to reverberate for long time in the lives of the Winchester Brothers. Kevin was their responsibility. They cracked the stone that awoke his calling out of necessity but everything that happened to him after was driven by what Team Free Will needed. When Dean told him he was Family and Kevin cried – I wept too.. It felt so true and it still does.
So Kevin’s death needed this moment. For both Sam and Dean this is a sucking chest wound. I don’t see it healed anytime soon. I refuse to hope for something good to come out of it because I WANT it to hurt. Kevin was worth more than an abject lesson from God. The Winchesters have lost loved ones before but this is a death they need to really process. I don’t want repression or ‘spurts of violence and alcoholism’. I don’t know if our heroes can actually do this so I’ll be interested in seeing where the writers take us.
Thanks for the whole song. It’s haunting and beautiful, just like the montage is was used for.

Damn–now I’m tearing up for real–and I’d been able to stay dry eyed, through Kevin’s death, to the brother’s parting last week. Not for lack of feeling, more just feeling all cried out. What a gorgeous song, and so perfect for the scene and really, the show itself. I hadn’t heard it before it was used last week–though somehow when the guitar started up, I knew it was Seger.
Thank you, Alice.
