Robin’s Rambles: Supernatural 9.09 – “Holy Terror”
“Holy Terror” – Robin’s Rambles, Episode 9, Season 9
Angels have formed into warring factions, both intent on taking over heaven from Metatron. They are torturing those who refuse to take sides into doing so.
Bloodbath! Wow, you think those sweet, pretty chorus girls on the bus are in danger from the bikers in the bar, right? Nothing is ever what it seems on SPN. Jesus saves, indeed. They slay the bikers with angel-killing knives, I, 2, 3. Brrr!
Driving in the Impala, Dean impatiently orders Zeke to finish healing Sam. Zeke doesn’t like investigating angel crimes, but Dean points out that Sam will be suspicious if they don’t–family business. Zeke denies eavesdropping on his conversations with Sam; he’s healing his brother. Zeke disappears, leaving Sam to wonder where 50 miles went. More trials BS, says Dean, not up to warp speed
They find Cas at the crime scene, acting goofy. Agent? He still has the badge Dean gave him. Cas feels with angel slaughter, Cas is back in town. Could be Bartholomew. We’ll find ‘Em, vows Cas.
Two limos containing three angels each pull up. Malachi vs. Bartholomew’s people, and the former is pissed because the latter sent his handmaiden. Long story short, Malachi’s three stab Bart’s three to death for the disrespect and naked grab for power. And so it begins, says Malachi.
Having beers together at a bar, Cas, Dean and Sam talk shop. “You once told me, you don’t choose what you do, it chooses you,” says Cas, when Dean asks if he’s ready to give up the peace he found. Cas goes to get them another round–his first time–leaving the brothers alone. Zeke warns Dean that Cas will bring bad angels down on him.
Sam goes to the car, where Metatron waits for him. It appears that Zeke’s real name is not Ezekiel!
Dean tells Cas that when Sam did the trials, he nearly died. Ezekiel helped heal him, and though he feels bad about it, they have to keep their distance from Cas–so they can’t work with him. Cas looks sad.
Gadriel insists the stories about him aren’t true. “Yet you spent thousands of years locked in the darkest dungeon,” says Metatron, “You were supposed to keep evil from entering the garden, and you failed. I caused all the angels to fall, including the imprisoned ones.” The real name of Ezekiel and a former prisoner of heaven? Damn, Dean, you sure know how to pick ’em! Metatron has gotten lonely in heaven and wants a chosen few to join him back up there, including the angel healing Sam.
Back at the bunker, Sam inquires after Cas, wondering why he took off again and why Dean isn’t more worried anout him. That’s what Cas wanted, insists Dean. Sam has looked up the obit on one of the dead bikers–family guy, born again biker guy. Boyle boy. Bart people.
One of the chorus girls is setting up a bunch of Malachi people to be possessed by angels, but they are set upon by a group of Bart’s followers and killed. The chorus girl has a big black hole in her chest
Metatron tells Zeke he had to isolate himself from humans; he could never get used to them, all those emotions! Humans are chaotic, agrees Zeke–Sam–it is a mess in here; his brother–I don’t know where to start. Zeke assumes Metatron will rule the new heaven, be God. He’ll take the burden, says Metatron, not the name, necessarily, maybe X, they’ll have Paradise again.
Pitiful and funny to watch Cas pray in all different positions. He’s lost and begging someone to hear his prayer. When his TV set won’t work because it isn’t plugged in, an angel sheriff came to his door.
Sam and Dean connect the two sets of angel killings and realize this last attack murdered a bunch of young college kids. Deans urges Kevin to work harder on translating the tablet.
Muriel, who has explained about the warring angel factions to him, and Cas are captured by Malachi, who brutally tortures both of them. He refuses to believe Cas was duped by Metatron rather than being in league with him, and keeps slicing into him, attempting to get more information from him. Muriel is first tortured, then killed, even though Cas tries to save her life. Malachi tell Cas that many angels, including Ezekiel, died in the fall, and it’s all Cas’ fault. Malachi leaves Cas alone with Theo and orders to kill him, but Theo wants Cas to introduce him to Metatron–he wants to be raised to heaven, be his soldier. Malachi is crazy. He will talk to Metatron about restoring his grace. Cas pretends to be unsure, but says he’ll help him. After Theo unchains his hands, Cas slits his throat and sucks in his angel grace, then presses his hand to his forehead and kills him. Malachi returns and finds his henchmen dead.
Dean gets a call from Cas, from a pay phone. He says he did what he had to do and is an angel again. He tells him about Malachi and he needs to be ready if he’s going to war. He also reveals that Ezekiel is dead.
Dean races to ask Kevin to “power down” an angel. Hit the tablet–now!
Gadriel agrees to join Metatron as second in command. Metatron hands Zeke the name of an enemy he must slay to prove his fidelity. Is it Sam? Dean? Gadriel reluctantly takes the piece of paper. Decide, orders Metatron.
Kevin assures Dean the sigils they painted will briefly hobble the possessing angel; he got part of his intel from the tablet and part from a Men of a Letters book. Kevin asks what’s going on. “Trust me,” says Dean. “I always do, and end up screwed,” says Kevin.
Sam has returned from a long beer run, and is putting the beer in the store room fridge. Dean has drawn a sigil in his blood on the wall. He slams his hand against it. “What’s going on?” Sam asks. Dean quickly reveals that the trials nearly killed Sam, and when he was in the hospital, near death, he let an angel possess him–tricked him into saying yes. “So, again, you thought I couldn’t handle something and you took over,” says Sam angrily. “I did what I had to do,” Dean retorts angrily, “You wouldn’t have agreed, and would have died!” “I would have liked a choice!” Sam says. “Kick my ass later,” says Dean, “you’re not possessed by nice-angel Ezekiel, but some unknown bad angel–dump him!” Sam heads for the door, but cold-cocks Dean first, leaving him lying on the floor.
Sam goes out to Kevin, who mentions that he’s worried about Dean being “off” lately. “Don’t worry about Dean, he’ll be fine,” says Gadriel, placing his hand on Kevin’s head. Dean enters the room to witness bright light stream from Kevin’s eyes and mouth as the young prophet falls to the ground, eyes sockets smoking, eyes gone. “No!” Dean cries, attacking Gadriel, who pins him to a pillar. He calls first Kevin’s name, then Sam’s. “There is no more Sam,” says Gadriel, “but I played him convincingly, I thought.” Apparently Gadriel overheard Kevin and Dean discussing their plan, and he mind-messed Kevin into screwing up the sigil. Like so many others in tonight’s episode, Gadriel “Did what I had to do–sorry about Kevin.” He places Metatron’s kill order on Kevin’s chest. It says Kevin Tran. Gadriel leaves, taking Sam’s body with him. Dean, crying, heartbroken, murmurs Kevin’s name twice.
Questions
*Oh, Jesus, did Gadriel kill–or just blind–Kevin? Gadriel left with Sam’s body and Dean was crying, murmuring Kevin’s name. This was an amazing episode, a 10. But what a cliffhanger for six weeks! What did you think?
*Metatron is a manipulative SOB, and hateful. Why did he want Kevin dead? Another prophet will only take his place, right? The angel tablets will still be translated.
*Everyone wants to rule heaven. Now Cas showed what a cagey warrior he can be–he stole Theo’s grace by lying and murder. What did you think of Cas’ method?
*Dean’s effort to keep Sam alive has resulted in terrible tragedy. Your thoughts?
*What do you think is going to happen, my friends? Speculate.
I think Kevin is dead. As to why, I can’t say. The last time Metatron wanted something it for the spell to expel the angels from heaven. Maybe Metatron needs a dead prophet, or the eyes of a dead prophet for another spell.
Alas, I think Kevin is dead, too. But maybe, now that Cas has (somebody’s) grace back, he can resurrect Kevin? I don’t know. But maybe? Love, Robin
As far as Cas stealing Theo’s grace, I just wish he had done it earlier and taken Hael’s grace. But I’m guessing it’s akin to cannibalism so I think I understand why he hasn’t until now.
A lot of people are calling foul on this play. Anti-canon and all that. Who knows? Cas may find he has problems with taking Theo’s grace. We shall see. Love, Robin

Kevin is dead, I believe, because Gadreel did not just blind Kevin but also laid on his hand on Kevin’s head and Kevin shone as he was dying, just like an angel would. Metatron can decipher the tablets, so maybe Metatron wanted Kevin dead because he knew of Kevin already and did not want anyone to read the tablets-which leads me to wonder if the secret of undoing Metatrons spell is on a tablet. He may want the next new prophet dead also but that is in the future.
As far as Cas using his guile to take a grace into himself-good for him. He needed it to help himself and his friends. But he did take a grace of an angel who has different ideas and ways of believing-like killing people and other angels. Cass has done that but it always seems to be in self-defense.
Dean just can’t get a break-always Sammy is his first choice, no matter if Sammy has other ideas-like dying, but Dean tricked him into coming back to life. Dean seems to have the role of making numerous mistakes-mainly in the name of love of family and friends-but then he has to pay the price. And he knows he will have to pay a price-Death showed him that universal law in an earlier season. But he just keeps on making the same mistakes. I love the Dean character but I was not happy that he tricked Sam into accepting an angel into himself. Now with Crowley’s help and Cas, he has to turn around the events leading to Sam being taken over. Dean is not too proud to deal with the king of hell or a crossroad demon or whatever to make sure Sam is OK and yet he always has to pay for his decision to deal with them.

Wow, what a heartbreaking end to Kevin.
I suspected that Kevin was going to be the one in trouble from the episode preview, I didn’t expect him to die.
What really got me was his concern about Dean and that being the last thing he said. I had a flashback to Sam’ death in S1, his last word uttered being his call out to Dean before being knifed seconds later. Kevin died without knowing what was going on or why, taken by surprise, by the angels that were supposed to protect him. He was their prophet. And his line to Dean “I do trust you. And I always get screwed” well, what can you say?
Plunge the knife deeper, please.
And I can’t really explain why this is the case, but I was glad that Dean didn’t chase after Sam in that last scene. (I don’t know why I have expected him to chase him up the staircase) He turned his attention to Kevin, whom he’d finally come to see as family.
Dean has sent Cas away, gotten Kevin killed and has now “lost” Sam. Has this most recent plan backfired, or what? Poor Dean.
And, Gadriel walked off with the Angel AND DEMON tablet- any smell a deal attempt with Gadriel/Crowley coming up?
I sensed that Gadriel wasn’t decided about Metatron’s assassin request until he found out that Dean was “double crossing him”. Not that I want to defend him, but think about it- if he’s been locked up, he has NO IDEA how humans work. I don’t think hanging out with the Winchesters gives an recently-released-from-prison-angel” a balanced look on humans.
The ebb and flow of human emotions of this family is intense. I feel like it set him over the edge.
Questions-
Does this mean that Sam might become an angel? If he takes over, can he use the powers? Can he take over heaven? Close the gates of hell? Bring back John Winchester and Bobby from Heaven? I’m getting ahead of myself.
If Gadriel was the guardian of the Garden, does he have special powers? I also think it is ironic that Gadriel is considered “different” having made a mistake that cost the “garden”. The parallels with Sam are very interesting.
Why was Gadriel insistent that Dean was going to be fine? Remember how he said when he first appeared that he still believed in Cas and Dean? Or was that all a lie too.
Damn, I wanted to like Zeke!
Lastly, a quote from Dean, S6 “When crap like this comes around we deal with it, Like we always deal with it. What we don’t do is go out and make a deal with the devil.” Dean is so right.

Kevin is dead; just as troubling was Metatron telling Gadriel that this was the first name, implying that there will be more on Metatron’s hit list. There was a conversation earlier in the show between Kevin and Dean, where Kevin mentioned that there was some text on the angel tablet that looked like Metatron was trying to keep hidden from prophets (or something along those lines). Perhaps there was some information on the tablet on how to reverse the spell, or neutralize Metatron, and that’s why Metatron wanted Gadriel to grab the tablets? If he has the tablets, it doesn’t matter who the next prophet is.
How does Castiel keep finding payphones? Are there still that many of them around? Are there any side effects to an angel using another angel’s grace?
A common theme this week was “I did what I had to do” ; a lot of people are paying a terrible price for that mindset. Sam is “gone”, Kevin is dead, Castiel has taken another angel’s grace, angelic wars, Metatron wants to be God…
Even though Gadriel was lying about his identity, didn’t think he was a bad guy until he sided with Metatron and killed Kevin; just a sneaking suspicion that he’ll ultimately do the right thing and redeem himself at some point.

Does Dean dare trust Crowley? That’s what worries me. He has his own agenda, and without knowing what he wants, how does Dean dare trust him? I’m just scared that, in his desperation, Dean is going to jump from the frying pan into the fire in his efforts to save Sam.

You could be right here. Perhaps Gadriel is being led astray by Metatron just as much as Cas was earlier. Maybe, in the long run, Gadriel will do the right thing and help Dean recover Sam? We can only hope!

Hmmm, Sam with angelic powers? That would be something I’d love to see! It would be great if he could at least get the angels back in heaven! That would be enough for now.
I suspect that Gadriel had the best intentions, but was led astray by Metatron. Sam and Dean know a lot about being led astray by others. Sam had Ruby. Dean made his deal with the Crossroads Demon to bring back Sam. The problem with Dean is, when it comes to Sam, he’ll do anything that needs doing! The brothers are, and always have been, each other’s weak spot.

I wondered that myself; there are very few pay phones around anymore, yet Cas finds ’em! And they always work, another miracle!

I noticed that, too. I did what I had to do, famous last words. Sounds like a good excuse for screwing up, doesn’t it? Or a good excuse for doing what you WANT rather than what you SHOULD! Oh, Dean, oh, Gadriel, you screwed the pooch, and look what happened!
Love,
Robin
PS – I had a hard time getting on WFB, which is why I didn’t respond to everyone sooner. I apologize, my friends.

Oh please, please NO! Sam catches enough flak for exerting his own agency. If he gets powers and makes one mistake he will be raked over the coals. It also will give Dean the perfect way to avoid responsibility. Yes, I was wrong, but I TRUSTED Sam would have learned from his Ruby mistake to never use supernatural powers. Now I have to hunt down my power mad brother who has PROVEN he can not be trusted to cross the street without me because every decision he makes is wrong. For once I want Dean to not have a way to look the the one who was loving and put upon while Sam is the big old failure who lets Dean and the world down.

🙂 well, with the caveat that I can only claim credit for posting it – it isn’t my drawing …. I am really glad you like it. It was a great excuse to post it! It is possibly my favorite SPN art (I like Castiel’s expression handing over the can and Lucifer’s partying) so, yes, consider it an early birthday present – Happy Birthday!
