sweetondean’s Spoiler-Lite Preview of “Supernatural” 9.05 “Dog Dean Afternoon”
Itās that time again! Time to look at whatās in store for us with the new episode. Time for the spoiler-lite preview!
THEN
Well there was this witch you see
And Dorothy
And it turns out Oz is real
And the Tin Man didnāt make it
And monkeys really can fly and theyāre creepy and stuff
And Charlie is awesome
And the bunker has a garage and an epic kitchen
And Samās got a bedroom after all
And Dean wants Sam to put up ‘hang in there kitty’ posters
And then umā¦ well, Charlie died and Dean called for Zeke and Sam was still conscious and then he wasnāt and Zeke fixed Charlie but that means heās stuck in Sam longer and Samās starting to ask questions because things arenāt making sense and he keeps waking up on the floor and who the hell is this Zeke guy and Deanās starting to sweat and his lies are getting worse and worse and heās making mistakes like calling for Zeke while Sam is still conscious and he needs to stop calling for Zeke and Iāve mentioned that more than once to him and heās obviously not listening and Iām starting to think he wants to get caught because that might be easier and Sam keeps getting knocked out and that really canāt be good for him and Dean got kicked in the nards and that must have hurt but he kind of deserves it and thereās all these great broments happening but with an undercurrent of dread and and and now I want to click my ruby slippers together and say thereās no place like home because really this is all starting to snowball and I know where itās going and itās hurty and bad and hurty again and I kinda like it and what’s wrong with me and… Ack! *GASP* *wibble*
Sorry, I really needed to get that out!
NOW
Um. Iām not sure actually. Dean gets in touch with the animal within? IDK.
Yes I know, Iām being factious, but the writers of this weekās episode wrote āMannequin 3: The Reckoningā and I still havenāt forgiven them. So thereās that.
Letās look at the synopsis.
Episode 9.05 – “Dog Dean Afternoon”
DOGGIE DEANLITTLE — While investigating two bizarre murders, Sam and Dean realize there is an eyewitness to both gruesome deaths – a German Sheppard.Ā Anxious to find out if they are dealing with a witch, a skinwalker or other supernatural monster, the guys look up a spell that could let Dean “communicate” with the dog.Ā Unfortunately, the spell comes with side effects that no one saw coming.Ā Tim Andrew directed the episode written by Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder (906).
Okayā¦first up. Notice that this was originally 906. The episode numbers have been messed around with a bit.
9.06 is screening as 9.05
9.07 is screening as 9.06
9.05 is screening as 9.07 ā I think this may be one of the ones that weāve been waiting for/dreading, or at least the start of things we’ve been waiting for/dreading. I think maybe they pushed back a certain revealā¦because this is the Adam Glass episode and Iām pretty sure itās got an emotional whammy. But I could be wrong.
Anyway, back to 9.05 ā as in this weekās episode.
Um. Okay. Hereās the thing. Dean is scared of dogs. I mean, why wouldnāt he be, he got ripped apart by a bunch of particularly gnarly ones in the form of hellhounds. He also doesnāt like dogs in the car ā weāre going to get to that ā we all remember his 2 rules, right? You donāt take a joint from a guy named Don and no dogs in the car. So you’ve got to wonder why Deanās the one getting in touch with his inner puppy.
Of course, having Dean do the spell could be part of his facing his fear thing. Personally Iād prefer it if he didnāt dislike dogsā¦thatās just my thing though, because I like dogs and you know, if Dean and I everā¦waitā¦Iām confusing reality with Supernatural again. Or maybe old Zekey pops up and says that they canāt let Sam do the spell for angel reasons. I donāt know what theyād be, just spit balling here. Or there could be another reason. Or there could be no other reason.
I know this is very unlike me to be a tad um, negative and technically, Iām not, well I am a bit I guess, but I’m notā¦ Of course I will give these guys the benefit of the doubt but, I will admit to being skittish about this one. Seriously, that Mannequin episode. That door closing montage alone… Just donāt start me.
Letās look at the promo, because I donāt mind it.
Dog in the Impala. Just sayinā. Next thing we know he’ll be scoring a spliff from Don.Ā
Hereās what could be the huge positive is here, which may be another reason that Dean does the doggy spell, Jensen rocks at physical comedy. Iām not saying Jared isnāt wonderful at it too, we all know he isā¦if thereās a lock there must be a key and all thatā¦but Jensen really is quite spectacular at the physical comedy stuff and thereās something rather adorable about Dean sticking his head out of Babyās window with a goofy grin. Though imagine Samās hair blowing in the wind! Maybe THAT’S the reason they made Dean do the spellā¦the fandom couldnāt have coped with the awesomeness of Samās hair blowing in the wind!
And Dean barking at the mailman is pretty amusing and Jensen, just stop being so gosh darn pretty (never stop being so gosh darn pretty, Jensen.)
Let’s hope it’s all charming and Dean isn’t made to look stupid. I’m sure there will be a few good brother poking fun moments and they can be a laugh. I do love Sam’s “WTF Dean” face.Ā
Okay, preview clipā¦if you havenāt seen itā¦wellā¦I wonāt spoil it.
Flat out, worst preview clip ever. Recycled joke after recycled joke and not only that, it’s only 34 seconds long! That’s like, promo length – hardly a sneak peek! Come on! Throw us a bone here. No pun intended (ok, I intended the pun.)
If thatās the best from the episode, we’re in deep doo doo (I said doo doo).
I sat here having a promo producer moment goingā¦ Who picked that clip? Was it the promo producer? Does the show suggest a clip (probably not ā we pick the clips where I work.)? Was the promo producer new? Did they not watch the episode? Do they not watch the show? Did they just score from Don? WHY, WHY that clipā¦why? Unless everything else is just too spoilery. Maybe thatās it! MAYBE? Say yes. Please don’t say this was the best clip…
Plus this is another reason Dean might not like me…damnit. I don’t eat meat. A Vegan bakery sounds awesome to me!Ā
Moving right along.
It’s weird that weāre having two light/comedic episodes back to back, but obviously it wasnāt originally intended this way and Iād say that they want to keep the painful momentum going once we hit the agonising agony of it and putting a light episode in amongst the heavy stuff would break the flow and that always annoys us anyway!
But my bubbling apprehension about this week, isn’t because of any of that, it’s because I’m looking at the 3 other episodes that these writers have penned; in particularā¦well I donāt have to tell you:
6.06 You Can’t Handle the Truth
6.14 Mannequin 3: The Reckoning
6.17 My Heart Will Go On
(And the tragically lacklustre, Ringer)
It all makes me feel uncharacteristically nervous and I donāt like it, guys!
And just because… here are the episodes Tim Andrew has directed:
7.07 Season Seven, Time for a Wedding!
7.19 Of Grave Importance
8.06 Southern Comfort
Me being me, I promise, hand to my Winchester brother luvinā heart, to go in with the most open of minds. Always. Because I don’t watch this show any other way and because maybe under The Carver, these guys are more disciplined and I will go, MY GOD THEY ARE AWESOME NOW! Plus, I love this show no matter what and I always find something in it to make me happy (D-E-A-N).
Speaking of which, I have to sayā¦I freakinā laughed out loud at this photoā¦looks like Dean comes face to face with his arch nemesis againā¦ THE YORKIE! DA-DA-DUM! Thatās pretty funny right there. I love that ongoing Yorkie gag.
And you know, how often does this show surprise us with an episode we think is going one direction and it turns out to be another animal all together (yes, pun totally intended). We may end up rocking back and forth in an emotional ball…for all the right reasons. Supernatural can be sneaky like that.
When the CHCH promo drops, I’ll pop it in, keep your eyes peeled for it…maybe it will offer more clues!
So ignoring my uncharacteristic worrisome feelsā¦what do you think this episode looks like? Do you think it looks damn hilarious or are you like me going, ruh roh Scooby Doo style?
Hit me up in the commentsā¦
And you know, go in wide-open people and let the Supernatural chips falls where they may. Thatās what Iām going to do.
See you in review land ā hopefully pleasantly surprised. I’m ready!
-sweetondeanĀ
EDIT! CHCH PROMO!
I think Dean needs a flea bath!
This promo is funnier and now I have this picture in my head of Sam taking Dean to the park… Let’s hope that not having the urge to sniff butts thing stays put! Geesh! The mental image!
Actually, this makes my anticipation a little more anticipationy. I want to see what Jensen does with this. I am giggling. (Yay!)
Enjoy the epi everyone! I hope we all meet back at WFB going, WELL, THAT WAS A SURPRISE!
-sweetondean (again)
I am not hopeful, to say the least. As I said in another thread, the show has not done well with dog centered episodes. I loathed both All Dogs Go to Heaven and the less said about Man’s Best Friend the better. I will say that although Dean has every right to be afraid of dogs he didn’t seem to be in either of those. He wasn’t spooked by Lucky even before he knew he was a pervy, voyeuristic creep who murdered people and planned to turn his family into shape shifers. (Like I said LOATHED it). He doesn’t want a dog in the Impala, but I’m not sure it is fear, although it is possible the fear is like his allergy to cats, it comes and goes. Be in a Veritas’s house with multitudes of cats no sneezing, be in a magicians club with one, allergy attack out the wazoo.
I’m more of a flexitarian (I eat vegetarian a lot but don’t object to meat know and again) and I have found some wonderful vegan desserts, so the clip doesn’t warm the cockles of my heart.
As to the writers, M3:TR was not good, YCHTT was not great although it had a nice reveal of Sam being soulless, but not much else and MHWGO it was nice to see Ellen again and Bobby happy, I kind of liked Atropos fighting back and One Way or Another was used in a nice montage, but it wasn’t that good outside of that, so I have very little confidence there. I don’t know enough about directing to even guess if the director pulled more out of those scripts than someone else did, but they were not spectacular.
Basically, I’m expecting it to be not good and vaguely hoping I’ll be surprised. Sadly last week didn’t do a lot for me, although I didn’t hate it, but I’m truly expecting to be less than happy for 2 weeks in a row. That has happened before when I didn’t care for story direction, but has never happened because of quality issues.

Yeah, not expecting much but will also go in with an open mind. Dog episodes=ugh, usually. The clip is not promising. We shall see.
Yep percy, MHWGO was the best of the three – though the beginning of YCHTT with the Sam reveal was pretty good.
You’re right about Dean’s fear, it seems to come and go like the suprise cat allergy. He was definitely hanging onto Sam during the One Way Or Another montage when they came in proximity of the dogs. Maybe he just doesn’t quite trust them as opposed to being scared of them. I think the Impala thing is because they smell or may make a mess…remember the dog that belonged to the guy in Repo Man? (Poor doggy).
I really dislike that Mannequin episode so I’m feeling very hesitant but, you never know. I’m hoping I’ll be surprised. I’m certainly going in ready to be surprised. My fingers and toes are crossed for us all!
And vegan deserts are yum and I guarantee you Dean would get a nice pie in that bakery!
Oh man! LeahFFFC was faster than me! I was going to quote the same. š Amy, I love your previews! the run-on sentence: fantastic! I feel the same way, btw. When I first saw the preview for this ep (a.k.a Dean barking at the mailman), I thought ‘this is going to be great!’ BUT after seeing here that it’s the oh-my-gosh-horrible-episode-manequin guy who’s directing again, I’m, let’s just say, concerned. I do hope, as you mention, that Jensen’s comedic talent is used correctly and that Dean doesn’t look like an idiot in the ep. We’ll see!
Yeah, this definitely looks like a filler episode. I’m not going into it with high expectations. Here’s the way I look at it; the worst episode of Supernatural is still the best thing on television. I’d be happy to watch the boys read from a phone-book for an hour so I’m willing to sit through a blah episode. Also, I have a feeling there’s some great episodes to come!
I will try to keep an open mind but let most I don’t have high hopes for this one. As soon as I read what the episode was abut I didn’t have a good feeling. I do have to say I like to see Dean take on the Yorkie! Since I own two yorkies my money would be on the dog!
When I first saw the clip (and I’ve only watched it once) I was actually embarrassed for JA. I guess this is supposed to be the Yellow Fever episode, but aren’t clips supposed to generate enthusiasm for the episode?
As long as Dean isn’t turned into a familiar with a collar around his neck, I’ll try to watch with an open mind.
I’ve never thought Dean was afraid of dogs. He is afraid of hell hounds — rightfully so.
Isn’t November sweeps month? If so; hopefully, this isn’t one of the weeks that are included in that.
sorry double post weirdness happened
Let’s hope it’s all charming and Dean isn’t made to look stupid. I’m sure there will be a few good brother poking fun moments and they can be a laugh.
This, please! Pleasepleaseplease (and I actually like (for example) all the yellow fever stuff because all of it is funny and/or scary as hell seeing it from Dean’s point of view, so it isn’t that I don’t want to see him acting out of character).
But you know, normal behaviour … for a dog … not exactly … you know … noble or anything (for the most part). *Has flashbacks to Ty Olson trying to make Jensen laugh at JIBcon*
Is it me or are we back to the ‘Glorious Technicolour’ of the beginning of season 8?
(this box is not liking my usage of ‘u’ s )
Your one sentence description for the last ep is hilarious Sweetondean š I like your overall attempt at optimism for this episode!
While none of the episodes these writers have done are my favorites YCHTT and the Titanic episode aren’t the worst. Mannequin 3 and the Lucky episodes don’t really have redeeming features … well except Soulless Sam playing ‘fetch’ with Lucky which for some reason I find really funny …and Dean’s freakout at the beginning of Mannequin 3 … you know on second thoughts there are almost no eps with NO redeeming features š
Isn’t November sweeps month? If so; hopefully, this isn’t one of the weeks that are included in that.
“Heaven Can Wait” – November 12 is the one that the CW is promoting as sweeps highlight,
you know on second thoughts there are almost no eps with NO redeeming features :-)
True! I think the Mannequin concept was really fab – as in the haunted organ (just poorly pulled off) and I liked the Ben/Dean scene a lot.
And yes! Dean looks all Tanny McTans-a-lot again!

š
I loved all 3 of those writer’s episodes so I have nothing to fear, right? I can’t say there’s not enough here to even make a call right now so I’ll keep an open mind. And Dean has never been PC so…whatever, he’s said much worse. But just think of poor Sam, if we’re tired of the same old jokes, what about him “still not funny”.
sweetondean I love how you just wrote as if you were speaking right to us with the excitement and run on sentences. I have to admit that every time I watch that preview I have to laugh out loud. Jensen does that comedic thing so well that I am excited to see where all this takes us this week. I also was not a big fan of Mannequin but I did love the parts with Lisa and Ben because they were always a favorite of mine. I will try and keep an open mind because like you said, that second preview clip was just not that exciting so I really really hope there is a whole lot more there that they are just keeping from us on purpose. Either way, I am never totally disappointed in the show because I love watching it no matter where the story takes us. Come on Tuesday night, please! :sigh:
I pretty much agree with Amy and everyone else here; I am hoping for the best, but fearing the worst. I love a Dean who is irreverent and funny, sharp witted and snarky, but I loath a Dean whose made to mug and be campy simply for the sake of the plot. It worked really well in Yellow Fever, a funny one off episode with ties to the season arc in many ways and in the end revealed quite a bit about Dean and his fears for his brother and his demon deal. The clip of Dean barking at the mailman and hanging his head out the window were sort of funny (Jensen has a way of downplaying things so that they remain funny, but grounded) so after clip one, I had hope. But the vegan/blind people/sunglasses clip, ughā¦ not so much, so I am back to worrying.
The good news is that Supernatural as a show seems to have a talent for taking a wacky premise and turing it into comedy goldā¦Changing Channels, The French Mistake, LARP and the Real Girl. But these writers? Mannequin 3ā¦..’nuff said. :(.
Please Show, pleaseā¦ surprise me?
“My Heart Will Go On” was great, you’re crazy if you don’t like that one.
š Amy, I laughed so much reading your preview that I feel like I don’t need to watch the episode now (okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration š ).
But I can’t seem to get the mental picture of ‘Sam’s hair blowing in the wind’ out of my head. Sigh.
I also haven’t been a fan of the ‘dog’ episodes, although it was pointed out to me last night (thanks Jules) that there have been nice moments with dogs on the show – Sam with his dog Bones in Dark Side of the Moon, and Sam with Riot in the early part of season 8. Maybe that’s why Sam doesn’t do the spell – because he’ll be able to cope with Dean showing dog-like symptoms, while Dean might not be able to cope with Sam showing dog-like symptoms. IDK.
I actually liked two out of the three episodes by these writers (with the Mannequin episode being my least favourite of the entire series). So, I’m going into this week with cautious optimism. I also got a laugh from both the promo and preview. š
Enjoy the episode everyone!

Mannequin is my least favourite of the series too. The other 2 by these writers are okay, not great, but I don’t really have major issues. I’m always cautiously optimistic! It’s in my nature! š
Awesome preview! You do apprehension far better than I do sweetondean. I’m usually far more blunt. š
I don’t know, whenever they’ve downplayed episodes like this in the past, they’re usually horrible. However, would they honestly have a bad episode in sweeps? They could have switched this with last weeks if that was the case. I guess we’ll find out.
BTW, I met Nicole Snyder at Comic Con. She was very, very pregnant, and her young daughter was dressed as a Disney princess. She was adorable! Sometimes when you meet the writers like that, you learn to appreciate that they’re at least trying. They don’t mean to write a crappy episode. So, I’ll be constructive, even if it doesn’t meet expectations.

This is what I’m thinking too. Essentially the next 3 weeks should be kick ass eps,..so maybe they know something we don’t…which of course they do!
And you’re so right about the writers…they don’t mean to write a dog (sorry just had to get that in somewhere) and it’s not like they’re alone in this process!
Plus, there’s always something to love!
i don’t tend to judge the book by the cover so as usual i’m pretty much optimisistic regarding all eppies…where there’s a winchester there’s hope right? š
actually i’m looking forward to this eppy for one reason only. i want to see how the dog reacts to sam. it’s a fact that animals can sense evil and danger. if a dog goes ape s***t for no apparent reason, trust that there is a reason. that being said, i’m totally looking forward to how this dog acts towards sam. if the dog is ok with sam then i stand by my feeling that zeke, while obviously hiding something, is as he says, on the up and up. if the dog has a problem with sam, then it’s because he can sense there is something bad inside him. it’s not sam he has the problem with.
so how far will dean meld with this dog? will dean have instincts the dog has? i’m looking forward to finding out.
Is the dog in this episode the dog who played the dog version of Lucky in ADGTH? And is that Yorkie the killer Yorkie from Yellow Fever? Should we add them to the list of recurring actors?
Ooooo nappi! Interesting! Now I’m more eager!
And yes, where there’s a Winchester there’s always hope and a good deal of awesome! š
I am very nervous about this episode. I can’t stand these two writers, but I’m always willing to give anyone a chance, especially when there are Winchesters involved. And E, that is funny, I wondered the same exact thing! š The funny thing is, they probably are the same dogs as before. And SoD, thanks for the laugh, even though it is a nervous one. :-*

E –
That made me laugh. I expect to see side-by-side comparison photos popping up on tumblr before the night is over. š
nappi – That IS an interesting idea. The only reason I can see for Dean to be holding to dog’s leash in those promo shots is if it has an issue with Sam…… Hmm. They’re probably not going there, but it is the stuff of thinky thoughts!
This has probably been mentioned before (if so, sorry for the repeat), but I sure hope these writers have considered how to make the premise make sense…. More than just having Zeke say Sam can’t do the spell, as Sweetondean mentioned.
If Cas could chat with the cat in HH, it would’ve been a whole lot easier for Dean just to ask Zeke to interrogate the dog, wouldn’t it? Even though I hate having an angel as the quick fix guy, it needs to make sense that they don’t use him! I hope there’s a good reason they’ve decided to go with hoodoo, instead.
Mind you, I love seeing Jensen (and Jared) do some comedic stuff, so…..
(ETA: About the vegan restaurant clip: If you can’t say something nice….. š )
CHCH promo now up http://www.spoilertv.com/2013/11/supernatural-episode-905-dog-dean_5.html. Nothing about it makes me fee differently about the potential of the episode. Oh well, I’ll give it a chance.

Thanks percy, it’s in the piece now.
This actually made me giggle. If they’re going for comedy, this promo definitely captured it better…but still gave us not much else.
I do want to see what they do with this now. That’s better than I was feeling!
I don’t hold out a whole lot of hope bsed on who wrote and directed it, but the promos look hilarious. I will keep an open mind because the writers have gotten pretty good at throwing me curveballs. Also hope they don’t go down the road of making Dean stupid.
Is it just me or does “Mannequin 3:The Reckoning” need to be retitled to :
Mannequin 2 : Electric Bugaloo? Or would this be the prequel? I’m just saying. Everytime I see this title, that’s what I think of.

There was already a Mannequin 2; Mannequin Two: On the Move.
Well, well, well! I was pleasantly surprised!
Oh I was, too, Sweetondean. That was a fun episode.
I thought the “THEN” set it up perfectly… all those reminders of previous ‘fun’ episodes to let me know this one was SUPPOSED to be silly, in a don’t-get-your-panties-in-a-knot-over-anything, we’re-just-having-a-laugh kind of way… with just enough plot reminders to make me wonder what on earth Zeke!Sam has to do with Dog!Dean….
That was a little bit of brilliant.
And Jensen (Wow!) played the comedy on just exactly the right note, -not overdone -, that kept the whole thing grounded. The man has great comedic talent (is there anything he can’t do?).
I want the gag reel! š
Just a quick note here to say that I too was pleasantly surprised!! What a fun eppieā¦. loved Dean playing fetch without realizing it! HA! I left a much more detailed comment on Bookdal’s “Let’s Speculate” article, but just wanted to drop by to say that I really liked this episode too.
I didn’t set the bar too high for this one and that seemed to work because I ended up thinking it was mostly good fun. It was far from my favorite but Dean fetching was worth the watch alone. I wasn’t wild about the animal voices. Like old vaudeville comedians or something. Dean giving the poodle the “how you doin” look was both funny and cringe worthy. All in all, pretty OK.
OK, just read your preview as even though it was āspoiler-liteā tis still too much for me! And I realise this is now post-episode and you are probably gonna post a review any-minute-now, but had to comment!:
ā¢ Your Oz-episode related rant was FANTASTIC!! EXACTly!!
