Dear Sam and Dean
You don’t know me, but I really feel the need to write to both of you. I know this can’t replace the support and guidance you would seek from Bobby, but there are some things you still need to hear. A few friends and I have been silently observing what you have been going through this year, and we know what you will be facing in the next few weeks. We know you are worried about Castiel. Something is wrong with your dear friend but he won’t, or can’t, let you help him. He isn’t answering your prayers and you know he is in trouble. He has the Angel Tablet but what it does and why he was looking for it are mysteries. You’ve met Naomi, and you know you can’t trust her, but she saved Bobby’s soul. How is she involved in all this? Above all, you are worried about Kevin. That mixed-up, scared, incredibly powerful kid stashed his part of the Demon Tablet…and you have to find them both before Crowley finds them. Kevin is the key. He can help you complete what might be the most important hunt of your lives…the mission to which you have irrevocably dedicated yourselves. The target that consumes every waking thought and haunts your dreams at night. Closing the gates of hell. The third trial.
Dear Sam and Dean, April 30, 2013
Dean, it must be so hard to feel helpless. You didn’t want Sam to have to go through this. You wanted it to be you. You became such a fierce hunter in that year of endless battles in Purgatory. You keep asking yourself why you couldn’t be the one to face this fight. Why did it have to be your little brother? You don’t mind being a hunter. In fact, if Purgatory taught you anything it was that you are good at hunting. It’s who you are. It’s who you’ve been your whole life. But Sammy wanted something different and you can’t give that to him. No matter how many times he tries to get out of hunting, somehow he gets pulled back in. All you have wanted your whole life is to protect him. You would trade places with him in a second. That would be easier than being powerless to stop what these trials are doing to him. Even with all that you have been through, this, sitting by watching him grow weaker every day, this is harder than any hunt, than any sacrifice. This goes against every fiber of your being, yet this is what is being asked of you. You would lay down your life to save him, without a second thought and without a single regret, yet once again, you have to let him go. You don’t want to even think about losing him again. So all you can do is support him, help him, protect him….carry him…and never give up on him. Dean, please believe that this is the most important thing you can possibly do. Your love and dedication to your brother, your unwavering belief in him, your strength and courage are keeping him going. Don’t you understand that it was your love, your unbreakable bond, your vow to never, ever leave him alone that gave him the strength to crush Lucifer when both heaven and hell were poised to end everything you hold dear? Dean, you stayed at Sam’s side and gave him the power he needed to win, and you can do it again. You will do it again.
Sam, we know that you are silently worried about being strong enough to complete the last trial. It is very hard for you to admit that to yourself, and even harder to admit it to your brother. You are forcing yourself to believe that it is possible to survive it all, but you are facing challenges that God himself created. You have never felt worthy of anyone’s faith in you. You know you have let people down before. You’ve been beaten down so many times – by demon blood, by Lucifer, your whole life being manipulated to serve hell. There is so much at stake here and you secretly doubt yourself yet again. Last year you nearly escaped all this. You learned that a normal life is possible, but just as you were reaching out to grab happiness, it was snatched from your hands. So you have recommitted yourself to do this one last thing. You want to be strong enough to end the suffering that demons have caused in the world. You keep telling yourself that you can do this. You want to do this, for yourself, for your parents, to give good a fighting chance in the world…and for Dean. He was devastated that you didn’t look for him while he was in Purgatory and, justified or not, you don’t want to let him down again. He is counting on you to do this. You feel the weight of the world crushing down on your shoulders once again and you hope, you pray, you are worthy. Sam, please believe that you’ve already given Dean, and us, everything. It wasn’t an accident or good luck or fate that you were able to save the world before. It was your heroic courage and inner strength to keep going no matter what the odds. It was your endless willingness to sacrifice yourself for others. Sam, we are so sorry that you have to go through this again. Defeating Lucifer should be enough for one lifetime, but you can do this. When Dean hugged you (and didn’t bust you for leaving the bunker!), he was telling you that he knows you can do this. You’ve asked him so many times to believe in you. When you look across the room at him now, know that he finally understands and does believe in you. You have a goodness inside of you that can’t be defeated. It is your core. It is your weapon. Dean won’t leave your side. We won’t leave your side. Charlie said it best, “You know you are going to be OK, right?†Now you just have to believe it yourself.
Sam and Dean, if you can still believe in anything, believe that there is nothing you can’t do if you stick together. You have said those words to each other before but only now are you really starting to accept it, to understand it. Our hearts have broken for you when you have fought with each other, when you confide in other people instead of each other, when you hurt each other, when you don’t listen. You have both lost the love of your life, and you have both lost friends (Dean, don’t give up on Benny yet). Finally, finally, though, you are working together again. You are family and that will get you both through this.
No, we haven’t met and probably never will, but we know what you’ve already sacrificed. More will be required of you in the next few weeks but we will be there with you ever step of the way.
With sincere thanks for all you have already done,
Someone who will always have your back.

Friends, if you could write to Sam and Dean, what would you say to them to help them face the third trial? What do you want to say to them? Feel free to rewrite, add paragraphs or jot a simple P.S. to my letter, or just sign your name to show our boys your love, thanks and support. We wait together, breathless, with hearts pounding, to see what unfolds in the next three weeks.
Wow, you truly said it all.
Made me tear up good and proper. *wobbly grin*
These last few episodes are making us all tear up! Hurt!Sam, Worried!Dean, and Hugs all around! Grab the tissues…3 more weeks to go!
Dear Nightsky,
That was so lovely. I can get so emotional over these two guys but this really did a number on me. You have captured exactly how I see them. And always will. Welcome to the site, you are a wonderful addition to this amazing staff. 🙂
Leah, Thanks so much for your welcome. The WFB staff is amazing, isn’t it?! I am going to have to work hard to keep up with them! The site is great though because of the wonderful comments all the readers add to the articles. The conversations keep us going!
I am expecting these next 3 episodes to be epically emotional. I am anxious and excited, … worried too……
Nightsky,
That was lovely. I cant think of much else to add, except for maybe:
1. Keep the faith – in yourself, in each other, and in the power of love and hope. It seems to have been pretty successful in the past!
2. Carpe Diem – Seize the day, although seize the right day. There’s a time and place for everything, “a season under Heaven” so to speak. But is this the time for revenge? Just wondering. In all battles, organized military or guerilla warfare, there is an optimum moment to strike. Trust yourselves to know when it is, OR when it isn’t.
3. Your parents would be proud of you – I think you know what I’m getting at there. Neither of you ever really got to hear your mom or dad utter that special, powerful phrase. Know that wherever they are they must be so proud of what you have accomplished, and done for the world. But most importantly, let yourselves acknowledge how proud they would be of the bond of steel or diamond or love (or any other incredibly powerful, durable thing) that you have forged between you.
4. Keep hugging! – It really seems to work for you guys! (I mean it works for all of us, but for you guys it’s like super-strength-serum!)
We believe in you!
Pragmatic Dreamer
Loved everything you added, but you got me to tear up with “Your parents would be proud of you”! Thank you for that.
And definitely keep hugging. Can’t ever get enough hugs!
Charlie summed it up pretty well last week. Sam and Dean, remember, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish when you work together. You have a home in each other’s hearts and because of the MOL legacy you have a real place to call home. You possess strength, courage, and integrity. You’ve made all the generations of your family proud. You’ve got friends-Charlie, Garth, Jody, Heavenly Bobby, Cas, Benny-to name a few who care and respect you. Heck, even Crowley respects you.
Your characters represent the best that we have come to expect from our heroes- tenacity, ingenuity, vulnerability, compassion, and an unending concern for the well-being of others. To semi quote Dean- “Angels, demons-all those sons of bitches- we’re the ones they should be afraid of.”
We’ve got your back, Sam and Dean. Keep the faith because we’ve never lost our faith in you.

All that…and the humility to not know you are heroes…
For what it’s worth, Sam, I think you knew, all along, deep down, that it had to be you that completes the trials. God is giving you the chance to balance the scales…you can do this, we know you can. You’ve just got to believe in yourself.
And Dean…you are the best big brother in the world, I only wish I could have been so lucky in those regards. I know it’s breaking your heart to see Sammy going through this, but you, too, are far stronger than you know. Faith isn’t about believing in God or not…it’s about taking that blind step into the unknown, and trusting you will come out the other side. And you, my friend, have more faith than anyone I’ve ever known.

Amazing. That really touched me.
8yrs…have followed it every step of the way. Dean has finally grown up, and he is faced with a staggering decision. And Sam finally has the chance to balance the scales and redeem himself in his own eyes. So their faith is about to be tested big time.
so cool
this is amazing
the thought of writing a letter never occurred to me :))
Its brilliant
On a lighter note – Sam and Dean, don’t hesitate to ask for help. There are lots of good people around you ready to give you a hand if necessary. So maybe it makes sense to invite to the party Aaron and his golem who could prop up those Gates while you will be closing them.
Ah, Nightsky, that was just beautiful. I think you put into words what we’d all love to say to Sam & Dean. As Charlie said last week, “There’s nothing that the Winchesters can’t do when they work together”, or something to that effect.
Nightsky what a wonderful, heartfelt piece you wrote here. I have always enjoyed reading your comments on this sight and now to read complete articles you have written is just such a treat. This is what I would have said given the opportunity to do so, to Sam and Dean but you worded it oh so more eliquently then I probably would have. Want a thrill it would be to think that they could actually read this some day. It would be great to be able to tell them that we are behind them and got their backs and support them no matter what because we are “family” and family doesn’t stop at blood RIGHT???? These guys hold such a special place in my heart for them that I feel their pain, their joy, their doubts. To be able to tell them as much is an awesome thing.
Welcome Nightsky and I look forward to many more articles from you.
That was so lovely, I can’t think of anything to add.
Happy Birthday Sam Winchester.
Nightsky, this is a beautiful, evocative piece. The letter truly resonates in light of last night’s episode, “The Great Escapist”. It was “one of those” episodes you need to wait a day or two, then, watch it again.
Sam and Dean, keep your ”Destiny is what we make it” belief firmly in front of you on this journey…y’all are going to need it!
Re-watched The Great Escapist. Worth it. Not worrying about plot or expositional material, just the fine script and A+ performances all around. Finally, Kevin’s genius pays off as figures out the fakes. J2 really do interpret the fake S+D with different styles (not to mention the out of character Sam talk”Special K”). This letter to them resonates, oh wait, are you related to Metatron? Gotta go take an ice bath. Thanks for the personal letter of things fans would like to say to the characters.
I think you said it all – and beautifully. *sniffles*
