Supernatural Makes EW’s 26 Best Cult TV Shows Ever
I know that Supernatural often makes this list or that list on various websites, often in a ploy to get traffic from the rather rabid fanbase, but EW did a really cool retrospective on the 26 Best Cult shows ever. At first it was inconceivable to me that Supernatural was only number 20 on this list, but when you see how so few of these shows are active shows, and most barely lasted a season or two, then it’s a testament to what Supernatural has really accomplished. They are in some amazing company here. I especially love the “secret handshake” for the show. Clever!
Anyway, check out the list because if anything, this is fun for TV fans in general.

I think they got Dr. Who and Buffy right, but SPN should be way ahead of some of those other ones. Still, it’s an honor to be recognized for being such a good show. I sure think the J2s and the production crew deserve the recognition.
“a community so passionate, it’s almost scary.”
Hahaha, we were the only ones to receive this title! Can’t say I disagree. We are awesome!
I agree, Supernatural is in very good company on this list; Dr. Who, Buffy, Firefly, Lost, Arrested Development, X-Files etc… but they should at least be in the top ten IMH, unbiased opinion 😀 . I haven’t even heard of some of these shows. And is there another show that’s older? I am not sure. (BTW, I am not counting Dr. Who. I know that it’s almost 50 years old as a show, but in it’s current run with its current cast it’s only what 4 years old?) Longevity should give them a better place on the list at the very least over shows that were canceled in their first or second season despite how good they were, don’t you think?
Agree. They should be in the top tree.
Correction – firtree.
I agree they should have been top 5. Top ten at least. But it was a great list, even if I didn’t agree with the order. 🙂
I must have a thing for cult shows. Because ALL my very favorite shows were on there. SPN, X-Files, Firefly (always top three), Arrested Development, Community, Buffy, Dr Who, Star Trek (original and Next Generation-I can’t believe they only gave the original a mention). And a lot of shows that I really loved. The Wire, Fringe, Twin Peaks(at least the first season),Pushing Daisies, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and of course Lost. I also watched My So-Called Life (I am aging myself).
So like 15 out of 26. I should probably try some of the others. I did try the first episode of Veronica Mars, but it was pretty dark. I should probably give it another try.
Wasn’t lost too much of a mainstream hit to really be considered a cult classic? I thought cult shows were outside the mainstream?????
I kind of thought so too. X-Files too for that matter. It started as a cult show definitely but graduated to one of the higher rated shows. But Lost I thought started off pretty big so I’m not sure what they were using to classify them as cult. Maybe because it was weird? It definitely didn’t have mainstream plots.
I realized there is a cult show that I love that didn’t make it to the list -Psych and Monk too for that matter. But maybe since it’s higher rated for cable they didn’t make the list? I don’t know.
