A Recurring Character Returning to Supernatural?
DJ Qualls was at the TCAs (Television Critics Association) event today for cable channel FX promoting his new series "Legit." While he was there, he supposedly revealed (I'm having trouble of finding more than one source of this information) that he was headed to Vancouver in a few weeks to reprise his role of Garth Fitzgerald IV. Here is the quote as reported by Pop Culture Zoo:
"I go back to Supernatural in a couple of weeks. It's one of my favorite shows to moonlight on. Jared Padalecki is a really good buddy of mine and also they wrote the part for me. And that's kind of an honor when somebody calls you and says, ˜Hey, we wrote this for you. You probably are not going to do it." I read it and I said, ˜No, this is funny and I'd love to do it. And I'm having a great time.
The fans on that show are insane. I did one [a convention] in Birmingham, England. And literally people would just line up and hug you and cry. And it's like, ˜I am so boring in real life. This is really flattering, but you should see me ten minutes before I got here. I was like a wreck. They love it."
Here's the entire report, but a couple of weeks puts him in probably episode 4, if the information here is correct. What do you think? Is Garth on your list of characters that must return?

Oh yay!!! I absolutely LOVE Garth!! He’s so funny and awkward and nerdy!! He’s a fun change to the Sam and Dean duo dynamic. I can’t wait for him to come back 🙂
Love to see Garth on the series again. Love his character-nerdy,awkward but as sweet as can be. And he has not been killed off (yet) so that is a definite plus while he lasts.
I’m not thrilled at this news because Garth annoys me greatly. I still cringe when I think about that sock puppet scene.
Although, I am confused. What on earth happened to the concept that Sam didn’t look for Dean because he had no-one to help him?
Well, it’s not like Garth would be much help?
Or maybe Sam didn’t want to have Garth around. I can understand it XD
I find this bit of news extremely worrisome. I was hoping that Carver was going to correct the mistakes of the past, not repeat them.
Good point, Tim the Enchanter. Sock puppet aside, hunters are supposed to be something tough, hardened, standing in the face of evil to protect the innocent; and, according to canon, pretty miserable people who will not have a good ending. (Think Mary, John, the Harvelles, Bobby, Rufus, Sam and Dean, Mary’s parents. That coda that even filters down to Lee with his teenage Krissy, the Mackey guy who gave Dean the info on ‘Emmanuel,’ and the Ghostfacers.)
Compare that to Garth, an experienced hunter who is blissfully basking in a relationship with a woman with kids; and, although clearly inept, he is still alive and comes repeatedly to the aid of the Winchesters. It makes me ask:
Why is this idiot still alive?
If Garth is so masterful that he is still alive and can have it all, why was Jessica killed?
If Garth is so masterful and still alive and can have it all, why couldn’t Lisa/Ben have worked for Dean?
If Garth is masterful and still alive why was Lee written so that the concept of walking away from hunting in order to protect Krissy such a hard choice?
BTW, why can’t Sam and Dean just walk away from the job if they are so daggummed miserable and any village idiot can do they job? Garth diminishes any idea that hunting requires a person to be something unique and special.
Why did the Ghostfacers lose, was it one or two team members? They are basically on the same skill level as Garth.
Why did Richie (the first village idiot hunter from Sin City) die so soon if Garth can go on and on and on? Maybe it’s because Richie wore silk shirts and Garth wears denim.
Why, Show, undermine years of loss, angst, and the idea that hunting is something hard to do, something that requires self-sacrifice, if any Joe Blow can do it?
No, I’m not liking this news, or the implications that this news holds, one little bit. This and the ‘intense and overbearing’ mother (possibly recurring) raises red flags all over the place for a continuation of the ‘little popcorn horror show’ (read that B- horror show) seen the last two seasons.
Maybe they want to add some humor. But again, imo, it’s not the kind of humor I used to enjoy in SPN.
Well, I agree with you. I woudln’t mind if they kill Garth for good, and, don’t know, maybe bring back the gritty, crude atmosphere the show had seasons ago.
I disliked Garth a lot. I’ve always wanted to see more hunters (I want to see the guys that killed Sam and Dean in season 5!) but I don’t think Garth is a good example of a hunter.
He was too stereotypical, not a believable character (for me, of course!) and where are the badass hunters like the ones we used to see at the Roadhouse?
But it seems it’s only an episode, right?
Garth is funny. If they’re going ‘lighter’ with this upcoming season, it makes sense they would have Garth back. I just hope he leaves the sock puppet at home.
jensen and jared did excellent with the comedy spots back in the “old” spn days. infact alot of the humor back then are classics to this day. “pudding” for one- “shot gun shuts his pie hole” being another one. so i don’t see the point in garth just for the humor part of the show.
i like the character but at this point of the show-it needs to be badass and hardened, with hardened hunters not a flake like garth.
I like Garth and would be glad to see him again. He is an upper and not a downer.
Now, maybe they can find Frank hiding out somewhere.
And let purgatory put Bobby back together and return him to us.
Was Garth’s first episode Weekend at Bobby’s? Right before Rufus shows up bobby talks to a Garth.
