The CW Upfront: A Proud Day For a Supernatural Fan
This is a very proud day to be a “Supernatural” fan. After being persona non grata for years in the Dawn Ostroff era, “Supernatural”, now going into season 8, is finally getting it’s due. Here’s some fine pictures and Jared and Jensen on the infamous CW green carpet at the CW upfront presentation this morning. They haven’t been since the very first upfront just after season one, heading into season two I gotta warn you, Jensen’s suit alone might put some of you in heart failure.

Now that I’ve thrilled you all with these AMAZING photos, I’m going to indulge myself in a little commentary about today’s announcement that “Supernatural” will be moved to Wednesdays at 9 pm, being paired with The CW’s highest profile new show, “Arrow.” This is a long time coming. ”Supernatural” fans have been fiercely loyal and dedicated for years, fighting for respect as the show was often neglected by it’s network. It’s the fans, not The CW, that won “Supernatural” three People’s Choice Awards so far and a TV Guide Magazine cover. It’s the fans that made “Supernatural” ratings wise the #2 show on the network, and that even happening in the so called death slot of Friday at 9 pm.
With a new boss at the helm, Mark Pedowitz, planning his very first season on his own (he was handed the network by Dawn Ostroff this time last year), “Supernatural” gets presented front and center, the pride of the network for once and not the forgotten redheaded stepchild. Pedowitz has said that season 8 will not be “Supernatural’s” last, something that is not true for the once flagship of The CW, “Gossip Girl.”
Think about it. How many shows in the history of TV have in its 6th season been moved from its long time spot to banishment on Friday nights, managed to pull in consistently high ratings for the network and made the show actually competitive on that night, then get moved again to a high profile spot on a better night in it’s 8th season? I’m not sure, but we could be looking at history here. I’ve never been prouder to be a “Supernatural” fan.
Seeing Jared and Jensen at the upfronts today is a victory for the fandom. This very loyal, avidly supportive, and today feeling vindicated fandom (not to mention a little teary). Congratulations “Supernatural” fans. Our show has finally made it!

I actually am a little teary eyed! I’ve been behind this show for a long time trying to get others to watch and have recruited a few fans. I haven’t watched since the beginning but started halfway through, and of course own all of them. I am a very staunch believer in this show. I’m absolutely geeked out about this news!
I wonder if it will help? I’ve seen a lot of tweets from European fans saying they will no longer be able to sit up late to watch livestreams like they could on a Friday night because they didn’t have to be up for work or studies on Saturday. Will this affect live ratings? (Forgive me: I’m not all that clear on how ratings work.) Also I was very hopeful to hear that Misha would be back as a regular so I’m hoping that we might now hear something after tomorrow. The show just hasn’t been the same without Cas.
Alice has a lot of ratings information on the site if you want to read up on it. But to answer the question, the European audiences who are live streaming the show are NOT counted in the show’s ratings. The ratings are of USA audience only – its a lot more complicated of an answer if you want to know how the ratings are actually measured – Nielsen etc — but the short answer is no, it won’t affect them.

at Aecon last weekend I had the chance to talke to Jim Michaels and I asked him if he knows in how many countries SPN is shown. He said he doesn’t know that. I told him then that we did asked here on the WFB and were surprised in how many countries it was shown. His answer: “I am not surprised. After all that is what Warner Brothers makes their money with not with the live viewers in the states.”
A good example for that is Baywatch. I don’t know for how many seasons that show was on. But it only kept getting more seasons because of the world wide viewers not because of the audience in the states. – At least that is what I read.
Therefore I don’t worry for our show anymore, not even if the numbers in the states go down. It’s the world wide audience that counts and unfortunatly there are no numbers for that available.
They are moving it to 9 pm, I am not happy with this as it is against Criminal Minds one of the highest rated CBS shows and one of my other favourites.

That is why I will be watching Supernatural and DVRing Criminal Minds, between the two Supernatural is my favorite.

Well technically the highest rated CBS show is TBBT and NCIS 😉
But I am not worried we’ve gone against tougher competition in the Thursday slot many moons ago now. Were tough, strong and prevail on Wednesday’s.

Me too.. I love Criminal Minds as well. The good news is at least Criminal Minds now shows online after it airs.. Next day I think.
Awesome commentary! I’m with you, I have never been prouder to be a Supernatural fan. I am most happy to see Jensen and Jared finally getting the support and recognition from the network that they have deserved for years. I love Mark, I really do, for giving the Supernatural family what we’ve earned. And I absolutely freaking LOVE hearing that Mark is planning on more years! I’m with Jensen, let’s go for eleven and tell Tom Welling to suck it!
Yep, this made me tear up. I’m so happy for Jared and Jensen, and for everyone who works so hard every week to make this program so special. And thank you Mark Pedowitz, so very very much, for all of your support. I had to stop and re-read “season 8 will not be “Supernatural’s last” a couple times. I didn’t trust my eyes that I was reading that correctly. I wanna hug the whole show. But since I can’t do that, I’ll go hug my DVD box sets instead. If my smile gets any wider, I’m going to be grinning at the back of my own head. Wonderful news!

I am an avid Supernatural fan. My fear with the move to Wednesday night is that Supernatural’s ratings may suffer going up against the combination of Criminal Mind and Modern Family. I hope that the new boss at CW, Mark Pedowitz, will take this into consideration and not punish our show unduly. We are taking you at your word, Mr. Pedowitz, that season 8 will not be the last for Supernatural.
Jared looks hot as hell with the facial hair, the hair and the suit. Very sexy.
I do like Jensen’s suit.

Supernatural really is the little show that could! Honestly, I’m over the moon with Mark P stating straight out that S8 is NOT planned as the last season. Over. The. Moon.
Seeing those pictures of the Boys at the Up-Fronts I did get teary eyed — being an SPN fan is so interesting – and I’m so proud of the cast & crew and the fans — and I’m thinking to myself — ‘Suck it, Dawn!’
You know what I think? All of Dawn’s golden children – GG, 90210 and ANTM will be gone before SPN takes its final bow.
Supernatural is the CW’s longest running drama. I think its because we’re awesome.

I am so proud of this show and glad I am one of it’s many, many supporters. Both J’s looked super wonderful in their suits.
As for the show moving to Wednesdays, I hope it is good for them, I on the other hand will not be able to watch it live anymore. First, it’s on at the same time as two other shows I DVR, and second, I hate to admit that I am in bed at that time having to get up at 5:00 the next morning. Oh well, thank God that the CW repeats it’s 9:00 shows later on so I can DVR it then.

So very happy for the show, our boys, and mostly our fandome, we have shown that we have the passion and fight in us. I don’t think any other show, in any other genre has had the fan loyalty Supernatural has. WE ROCK!!!

Enough drooling. So as far as I get it Wednesday means a great spot for Supernatural. I am happy for them that they finally got recognized for all their hard work.
I am glad to hear that S8 is not considered the final season (depending on how it develops – cuz I refuse to believe it’s gonna be anything like S7! I decided to live in denial).
Smallville did 10 seasons. I don’t see why Supernatural shouldn’t.
Also glad to hear that the show airs in October. I know it means a hell of a hiatus but at least the show doesn’t get interrupted as often as it did this year (I felt constantly ripped out of the story).
All in all great news!
I feel like the fans gave this to the boys, and after that mess with the People’s Choice Awards, I’m proud of us. Of course, they give back to the fans every week by giving us their best performances. And I’d just like to commend the great crew and directors this show has, too. They do great work.

I don’t like the facial hair, and I think the boys carry the grunge way too far, but if their wives are okay with it, that’s all that counts. I like men, when they clean up, to look like those in Time After Time. Now, those were sharped dressed men. (Jensen looks like he forgot to comb his hair ?)
I am dying of curiosity to know (a) if the boys have renewed their contracts and (b) for how long. ‘Cause we are definitely looking at 9 or 10 seasons, and I’m still thinking 10.
Looking at the whole 2012 CW nightly line-up, it looks to me like all the shows matches make a lot of sense.

With that being said, I love the move to Wednesdays. That’s the one night when I usually watch NCIS re-runs on USA Network because nothing else that comes on interests me. The pairing of Supernatural with Arrow sounds really good too. I hope it’s just as successful as the pairing of Supernatural and Smallville. 😀
Mark Pedowitz rocks!! Finally, someone who gets Supernatural! This show, its’ writers, and directors are getting the recognition deserved. Not to mention its’ beautiful stars. This show, with all the great cultural references and awesome acting has been too long overlooked by network execs. Rock on, Boys!!
Great news!! I am so happy for the entire cast and crew of our little show. They have had great fan love for years but they deserve some network love and glad they are getting it. Now, where is their Emmy love?

This show deserves to be prime and center. It’s about time. I also look forward to Arrow and how that show will work with Supernatural. I think it is a testament to us fans and the those involved with the show that it is now here in this position., Those who work on the show work very hard on it, and us fans show our appreciation by championing it.

Congratulations to Jared and Jensen and everyone else involved with SPN. It’s about time they got some love, appreciation and recognition from The CW. It’s been way too long in coming. And many, many thanks to Mark Pedowitz. I remember reading the reports the last time they went to the Upfronts, all those years ago just after season one, it’s just ridiculous that it’s taken this long for them to be invited back.

I too don’t mind with a little five o’clock shadow like Dean. Not too much beard. They look okay and sooo hot. But Sam’s side burn makes me want to grab a shaving knife and shaving it myself. It looks weird. Me too glad that it finally caught up with sideburns.
