This Week in Supernatural History – Episode Sixteen

RIP, Rufus.
RIP, Rufus.
As the Season 11 hiatus begins for real, many of us are making Supernatural rewatch plans. Fans who are new to Supernatural may be contemplating how to catch-up on ELEVEN years of our fantastic show. “Man’s first expression, like his first dream, was an aesthetic one. Speech was a poetic outcry rather than a demand for communication. Original man, shouting his consonants, did so in yells of awe and anger at his tragic state, at his own self-awareness and at his own helplessness before the void.” – Barnett Newman I…
The Morning After In the WFB writing team’s “Impressions of Supernatural Season 12” discussion a few weeks ago, I categorized the show this year as “mysterious and surprising”. True to form, episode 12.17 “British Invasion” was full of surprises. Some of the unexpected events and revelations were surprises to the characters, while others shocked the viewers….
Okay, here it is, the big 100!!! I’ve already seen the episode, but I haven’t seen it in full HD glory. Given the LOADS of drama and strife in this episode, not to mention those non-verbal glares that kill us in about eighty different ways, HD is required. So, when its all done, or when…
Okay, system issues done. So what did you think? Just a word about the episode title. “Free To Be You And Me” was a best selling childrens album from the 1970’s and a cult classic for any child of that era. What did that have to do with tonight’s saga? No idea. I’ll try to…

1.16 – Oh, John.
2.16 – Oh, strange ghost whose name I can’t remember. Molly! Oh, Molly.
3.16 – Oh, Dean.
4.16 – Oh, Dean.
5.16 – Oh, Dean (I’m sensing a common theme here)
6.16 – Oh, Rufus.
Wow, all the 16’s have been real tearjerkers and, for the most part, full of loss. John gone again, Dean gone, Dean’s faith gone, Dean’s hope gone, Rufus gone. Even the way Molly went out left me with a bit of a pang.
Best out of that bunch, ummmmm ‘On the Head of a Pin’. Yeah, it was great to see John (and the ensuing hugs) in 1.16 and the brutality of Dean’s death in 3.16 (obviously that wasn’t ‘great’ but you know what I mean). I wasn’t overly keen on 5.16 but I liked 6.16. 4.16 though, that episode was a shocker from start to finish.
Thanks Elle.
Ahh…Shadow. My all time favourite episode of Supernatural. Daddy Winchester! Meg! So much angst! The boys’ reunion with their dad and then the all too soon parting ripped my heart to shreds. When John hugged Dean I was silently yelling HUG SAM! HUG SAMMY TOO!!! at my telly. And then he did. And Sam was all teary, Dean was all teary, John was all teary and I was just a teary, happy mess. 😆 And then John left and I was an unhappy teary mess. Sam unwilling to let his dad go, then him staring after his dad’s truck, Dean so quiet, resigned and sad…ack…my poor broken heart. Ahem, I’ll shut up now. In short, I love every single second of this episode.
2.16 – Haven’t re-watchd this in ages but I remember liking this episode a lot.
3.16 – Oh God. This episode was painful. I loved it but, oh, it hurt so much. Sam’s tears. Dean’s demise. ‘Remember what Dad taught you….remember what I taught you’. ‘Bon Jovi rocks…on occasion’. Fabulous. In an agonizingly painful way.
4.16 – I wasn’t so fussed on 4.16 ( not a fan of the angels/angel storylines) although my heart ached for Dean and I loved Sam’s ‘Miracle! NOW!’
5.16 – I didn’t like this episode.
6.16 – I enjoyed this one a lot although I wish they hadn’t killed off Rufus. 🙁
Thanks Elle.
Elle, does episode 16 mean ‘grab the tissues’?
Damn, we lost Dean, the amulet, and Rufus. 🙁
I didn’t like ‘Roadkill’.
Anyway, that brings us to the end of season three.
Damn.
Shadow: Loved it. Meg was awesome as a big bad, and exceptionally good in this one. Loved the daeva’s — that’s the name, isn’t it?
No Rest for the Wicked: They did it! They actually Dean to Hell, but not before the boys sang Dead or Alive. Awesome. The whole fandom was abuzz all summer.
I loved Roadkill, and I really liked the actress who played Molly. It was the beginning of Dean learning the difference between hunting every monster and hunting evil. And, I like DickDean. Remember, they played Bad Moon Rising in this one, too.
On the Head of a Pin: Powerful, powerful episode.
Dark Side of the Moon: Right at the top of my list.
Death’s Door: RIP Rufus. I’m still ticked off about killing Rufus off. I loved that character. (Yes, I hold grudges.) Not enough Winchesters, but a good episode.
Out with the Old: Doesn’t even begin to compare, IMO.
Hi Elle
Wow! I loved all these episodes.
They all tugged at my heart at some point or another. 😥
