What’s Your Supernatural Scene #4
Once again I went to my trusty Tupperware container and pulled out four more episode titles and put my thoughts on each. What are your thoughts on the following episodes? Is it a scene, a moment, a line or song? And why? It is your favourite or is it the emotional impact it has on you? Maybe it simply makes you laugh or hide under the covers.
Faith
I just loved this episode. This one had so many great moments. Sam’s call to his father. How Sam hovers over Dean, helping him walk to the chair of the motel room when Dean first left the hospital. And when Sam helps Dean out of the car and when finding a seat in Roy’s healing tent. I loved the Don’t Fear the Reaper montage. And Dean and Layla’s talk at the end.
Dean: Can I ask you one last question?
Roy: Of course you can.
Dean: Why? Why me? Out of all the sick people, why save me?
Roy: Well, like I said before, the Lord guides me. I looked into your heart and you just stood out from all the rest.
Dean: What did you see in my heart?
Roy: A young man with an important purpose. A job to do and it isn’t finished.
The Kids Are Alright
For this one it is when Dean is at the birthday party and is noticing the similarities between himself and Ben. He starts calculating the time frame between his last encounter with Lisa and Ben’s age. Dean’s reaction and expression cracked me up.
The first thing I always think of is the opening montage to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man,” showing the parallel moments between Sam and Dean while apart. I thought it was beautifully filmed but it also left me with a heavy heart as it confirmed that they really had gone their separate ways.

So what’s your scene for each of these episodes?
I just rewatched The Kids Are Alright and my favourite scene is the one where Dean finally asks Lisa if Ben is his. Lisa assumes he wants reassurance he is off the hook and has no responsibility, but Dean’s expression is very different. It’s another of the scenes where the writers show that Dean’s outward horn dog cool guy doesn’t sum him up–in his dreams he has a family. There was nothing sweeter he could tell Lisa than he would be proud to be Ben’s father and he meant every word.

You’re so right, the look on Dean’s face really showed that he meant every word. I also think that Dean wanted to say yes to Lisa’s offer to stay for a bit but due to his lifestyle and his impending deal, he simply couldn’t bring them into that part of his life.
I think he was tempted, too and this scene links so well to season six. Although I think there were issues with season six, I think the individual stories were necessary and well done–they just didn’t link together well. Dean had to take a chance on his dream in order to realize he really couldn’t have it, even once the apocalypse was averted.
Their biggest issue didn’t turn out to be Dean’s deal, the apocalypse or really, even Sam. I think it was that Lisa invited Dean into her life, but she had no interest in his. Dean had to suppress a large part of himself to fit into what she wanted, and that was never going to last. I think the roots of the whole relationship are in TKAA, both the sad moments and the tender.

I too agree that at some point Dean needed to take his chance on his dream.
And so true that Dean was living Lisa’s life not his own.
But to me I always understood that when/if Dean was to go with Lisa that it was because he was ready to give up the hunting life, it was what he wanted and that’s why he never went to her, until after Sam perished in Swan Song.
For me the reason that Lisa and Dean relationship was bound to fail was because of why he went to her, why he made his decision to pack up hunting.
He made this decision when he was emotionally broken and shattered over the loss of his brother. He was also doing it for Sam, to honour his last request.
I believe it was the right decision at that time because he was so broken, he needed to get away from that life and if he had attempted it on his own I truly believe he would have found himself on a road of self destruction. Just like Sam had and I believe that is why Sam insisted that he go to her. He was afraid for Dean.
Because he made his decision when he was not of sound mind and body, his needs/desires/instincts to get back to his old life would start creeping up on him once he started to heal emotionally.
Even if the Djinn hadn’t shown up and he was never re-united with Sam, I believe he would have found some reason or another to get back into hunting.
When and if he finally does quit and is able to stick with it, it would be because he made that decision with a clear mind and knows he is being true to himself that he is ready.
Brilliant choices. Here are mine:
Faith: one of my all time favorite episodes. I loved how spring Sam was to Dean and Julie Benz is golden to me in whatever she does. I also love the conversations Dean has with Layla. I also love Deans initial skeptisism at the healer.
The Kids Are Alright: Im a huge fan of the Saw movies so of course I love the beginning of the man in the garage. Even though its a small part I love where Dean leaves Sam standing on the sidewalk to go see “gumby girl”. He looks like a little boy standing there left behind lol.
Free To Be You And Me: I loved the intro comparing what the guys were doing as well. I really couldn’t stand Lindsay but I love all the scenes with Dean and Cas together. Those are always highly entertaining. And the return of Jess even as a trick was beautiful and heartbreaking.

When it comes to horror movies and/or scary scenes like the garage one, I tend to clutch onto a pillow for dear life and bury my head into it. I’m very brave that way.
Another scene that creeped me right out was when the mother returns from drowning her daughter in the car and finds her sitting on the bar stool asking if she can have the ice cream now.
I too loved the Dean and Cas moments. I giggled like an ‘idjit’ when Cas held his badge upside down and Dean casually flipped it over for him.

The Kids Are Alright – My favorite part is when Dean tells Lisa that he would have been proud to be Ben’s dad. (Although I just don’t buy that he’s not no matter what Lisa has said….)

Family Matters – I like the same scenes as you did in this episode.

I have to admit I’m on the fence with whether Dean was in fact Ben’s real father.
In TKAA I really thought ‘Yes’, most definitely. But when Dean stayed with them for that year, you would think Lisa would have come clean at some point.
In ‘Let it Bleed’ the demon possessing Lisa said Dean was the father then said she was just kidding and then implies she didn’t know who the father was. But in The Kids are Alright, Lisa said she knew who the father was. I guess the writers (much like the demons) like to mess with our heads.
You’re right, Karen about the writers. I don’t think we’ll ever get the answer to whether Ben is Dean’s child or not. I just remember the strange looks that Lisa threw Dean on several occasions. I also think that once she told Dean that he wasn’t the father she couldn’t back down without being a liar in his eyes. So, I think that issue will always be unresolved and unlikely to ever be resolved since they’ve been removed from Dean’s life.
Faith: I loved the whole episode. It’s the one that hooked me on SPN. My favorite scene was Roy calling Dean out of the audience, how embarrassed Dean was, Sam gently pushing him to go up on stage, and the dialogue between Roy and Dean.
The Kids are Alright: When Lisa confronts Dean and Ben about fighting with the boys. I liked how both Dean and Ben ducked their heads when she was scolding them. I also liked the two ladies talking about “The Dean.”
Free To Be You and Me: The opening montage. Brilliant.
Family Matters: Dean and Christian’s breast beating when Christian caught Dean going in Sampa’s office. I also really, really liked the alpha vampire’s scene when he was talking to Sam and Dean while in the cage.

That scene when Lisa scolds them for fighting was so cute. I love those boyish moments from Dean and Sam. And the way Dean’s face lights up when he has that Cheshire smile.
I too really liked the Alpha Vampire scene. The actor portraying him was fantastic, he was really creeping me out.

WHEN CASS DOES THE SOUL SEARCH HE ALREADY KNOWS BECAUSE WHEN HE BROUGHT HIM BACK FROM THE CAGE, HE SAID HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. HE DID NOT MEAN TO BRING HIM BACK SOULESS. BUT HE ALREADY KNOWS.
AND SAMUEL WAS ALREADY IN HELL BEFORE CROWLEY BROUGT HIM BACK YES? CROWLEY CANT JUST PLUCK PEOPLE FROM HEAVEN. SOMEONE SUGGESTED THAT MAYBE CROWLEY PURSUADED CASS TO GET SAMUEL OUT OF HEAVEN.
WE ALL KNOW SAMUEL IS IN HELL NOW, HAVING MADE A DEAL W/ CROWLEY.
NOBODY CAN TELL ME BEN IS NOT DEANS. THE MATH ADDS UP AND NO WOMAN TELLS OTHERS ABOUT THEE DEAN UNLESS IT REALLY MEANT SOMETHING. TRUST ME HERE FELLOWS.
I LOVED THAT WHOLE EPISODE. THE SCENE WHERE BEN TAKES OVER GETTING THE KIDS OUT OF THE WINDOW, TAKING CHARGE JUST LIKE DEAN.
LOVED THE OPENING OF FTBUAM.
FAITH- WHERE DO I BEGIN. WHEN SAM WAS SO NUTURING, DEAN HATING THE IDEA THAT A MAN DIED FOR HIM. I COULD GO ON BUT WONT 🙂

You bring up some good questions.
How I have interpreted all this is I believe when Castiel brought Sam back he didn’t realise at the time that Sam’s soul was left behind. I think he was too involved with everything going on in heaven to really pay attention to what Sam was doing and how he was behaving.
I think it wasn’t until he started to interact with Sam and Dean again that he realised the truth. However to confirm this he had to wait for the opportunity to arrive to do his ‘Angel Cavity Search’ without bringing suspicion upon himself.
As for Samuel, I believe he was in heaven and it was Cas that resurrected him. Crowley needed help in finding the door to purgatory. Castiel made it clear that Dean was to stay out of it, as he was now retired. Crowley then hinted ‘then I know of a certain big, bald patriarch we can take off the bench–the point is, they can get us to the monsters, the monsters can get us to Purgatory, I know it.’
Like Sam, I believed Samuel didn’t know who resurrected him and that he never met Castiel until they met up in ‘Family Matters’.
I believe when Castiel resurrected Samuel he had left him where Crowley was waiting for him to make his deal.
This of course could be entirely wrong from what the writers had intended.

In Faith, it was the woman in the woods running from the reaper, and when he put his hand on her face, and her eyes turned that greenish-white as she died. Of course, pairing that scene with Don’t Fear The Reaper by BOC, was perfect. I had totally forgotten I used to know that song, and this scene made me adore it.
Despite all of the really great moments in The Kids Are Alright, the very first thing I think of from this episode is that blankety-blank changeling in the back seat when the mother adjusts the mirror. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, to this day, I still can’t help but yell out when that thing pops up. I’ve tried to force myself to get used to it, and I can’t.
It’s a toss up in Free To Be You and Me, between Cas pulling out his FBI badge upside down, and Dean turning it around, and the opening montage between the boys. For me, it was just wonderful to see that no matter how much you split them up, they’re too intrinsically linked to ever truly be apart.
A close second after Sam’s Angel Cavity Search in Family Matters, I immediately think of the boys’ night time roadside chat when Dean tells Sam he has no instinct, and that Dean is going to decide what’s important because Sam can’t tell the difference. Something I love about the tone of Jensen’s voice during that exchange. I also like the Alpha Vamp’s long fingernail slowly scratching through the wrist restraints.

You’re not alone, that rear-view mirror scene made me jump too. You would think we would have learned from The Pilot that anytime they focus on the rear-view that something scary is about to happen.
The roadside chat was another good scene. I could understand Dean’s frustration at that point. He didn’t trust the Campbells and he could no longer rely on Sam’s judgement.

I had to laugh over Dean and Ben’s reaction to watching the mother and daughter walk by, how in sync they were. And Castiel’s face before going with the prostitute was priceless.
Free to be You and Me. The scene that always tugs at my heart is when Lucifer is talking to Sam. He has just told Sam that he is his vessel. Sam responds with “that will never happen”. I had watched that episode countless times but it wasn’t until my son bought a giant big screen TV that I saw it. A single tear fell from Sam’s eye, the right eye which is away from the camera. His voice doesn’t change, he isn’t suddenly overcome with emotion. I had no idea that tear was there. Ever since I made that discovery that scene took on new meaning for me. If I ever get the chance to ask Jared Padalecki a question I will ask him about that tear, if it was planned or a happy by-product of wonderful acting by both he and Mark Pellegrino.
Family Matters. While Sam is tied up and Dean and Castiel are discussing the fact he has no soul. The expression on Sam’s face, I don’t even know what words describe it. There is no panic, no curiosity; he is just patiently waiting for them to stop talking about him. I sometimes wonder if he was thinking to himself that the lack of a soul explains why he is now so different from what he remembers himself to be.

What a powerful and heart wrenching scene between Sam and Lucifer.
I felt so bad for Sam. Like he hadn’t been through enough, now to find out he’s Lucifer’s vessel.
I remember the first time I noticed that single tear I had wondered if Jensen had shown Jared how to do that.
I think the scene in Faith I like the most is when Sam calls John, and he just can’t bring himself to tell their father to please come, Dean is dying. It reminds of the one in Home when Dean calls John for his help. Both of them are so vulnerable sometimes.
In The Kids Are Allright, there are a few. When Dean sees the similarities between him and Ben, at the park when he helps him out with the bullies and Lisa scolds both of them, priceless expression on Dean’s face. And last but not least, when Dean tells Lisa he would have been proud to be Ben’s father. Dean has always been so good with the children of SPN.
Free to Be You And Me is probably my favourite episode of season five, I watch it so many times. From the opening montage to Lynyrd Skynyrd to the end conversation between Sam & Lucifer, it is a priceless episode. It has both pathos and funny, who could ask for anything more?
Family Matters, that opening scene, absolutely. The cavity search, and then Sam just undoing his bonds, because nothing can hold him back.
