Supernatural Preview: Episode 7.10 “Death’s Door”

BOBBY REVISITS HIS PAST

The CW is keeping “Supernatural” on the air a bit longer this winter than most of the network’s other shows, so on this Friday we are treated to episode 7.10, “Death’s Door”, which many are excited about not only because it features Jim Beaver, which is always a good sign but also sees the return of show runner Sera Gamble as screenwriter. 

The series, once again, left us with an open-ended episode after “How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters” for our Thanksgiving holiday.  Bobby lying in the back of the van with a bullet hole in his head and Dean and Sam rushing him to a hospital.  This week’s episode picks up with Bobby lying at death’s door as a terrified Dean and Sam look on. 

The trailer shows Dean’s race to the hospital telling Bobby to hang in there while Sam desperately tries to help Bobby in the back. 

And at the hospital where Bobby is rushed into emergency while the boys look on and the anger Dean feels when Sam and he realize Bobby may die.

But the helplessness they feel at the start of the episode doesn’t last for long as both boys ‘race the clock on a high-stakes mission’ which I’m guessing means life or death for Bobby. Question is who gives them the mission?  For some reason, I can see Crowley involved here somewhere.  After all, Crowley and the boys have a common goal – to rid the world of the leviathans and who better to save Bobby than the King of Hell.  I think he has always had a soft spot in his heart for Bobby.  Hehehe.  Besides it would be nice to see the little devil before the winter hellatus. (Smile)

Show runner Sera Gamble stated in an interview, “We definitely advance the Leviathan mythology in episodes nine and ten, and we kind of back into it in an unusual way, we kind of do a different spin on it this season.   The boys will be really personally invested in hunting down the big bad by the middle of the season, and they will have a pretty serious run in with them.”  She continued, “We’ll run into him [Roman] again in episodes nine and ten.  He’ll cause really serious damage and big problems for the guys, and it becomes an intense fight between them.”  

So while all this is going on between the leviathans and the boys, what will Bobby be doing?  We have been given snippets from Bobby’s life and now we get to see the whole scenario played out. Yep…Bobby gets to relive his life. in Purgatory no less, according to a recent spoiler, and will come across a dear old friend in the process: Rufus (played by Steven Williams). Will this be the real Rufus?  That would be nice, BUT I really don’t like to think that all the hunters of the world who have given their lives for others end up in Purgatory.  That is really sad! (And one strike against the series for me!)

This episode will also feature a character called “Reaper” who is the grim reaper. There is always the possibility that this reaper could take on the persona of Rufus, although I hope not.  I’m going to guess the Reaper is the one who sets Dean and Sam out on the high stakes mission while Bobby and Rufus deal with the past.  Maybe the Grim Reaper has an axe to grind with Roman too.  

And not only do we get to see Rufus again, but Bobby’s house too.  Rumor had it that after they burnt it down in “Hello Cruel World,” they dismantled the stage set as well, which was the only permanent set the series had.  Well if they did, they reassembled it for this episode; minus the books Jensen reportedly was given. He’s hoping they leave it up and we get to see more of it in the future. How nice to see two old favorites before the holidays.  Now if only Baby would come back!

The photos released show mainly Bobby in his ‘dream state’ as he as Rufus solve “one of the most personal cases” of Bobby’s life…his relationship with his father.

We see a series of photos of a young Bobby and his family at a dinner table and the last photo of Bobby and his father obviously in a conversation by themselves.

And Bobby doesn’t look to happy either.  Let’s face it, the series has not been too kind to the father figures in the SPNverse, so no reason to assume Bobby’s childhood was any better than Dean and Sam’s was. BUT the boys did have Bobby for a good portion of it, so that has to count for something.  Here’s hoping Bobby does not fall victim to the Winchester curse, i.e. anyone within 20 feet of the brothers dies! (No smile here.  To me, that is just damn annoying and another strike against the series!)

The CHCH promo gives us many of the same scenes. We do see how fast Dean can drive that van and, from the sliding and dove-tailing it was doing, he is very good at keeping it on the road at high speed and the intense determination on his face to get Bobby to the hospital alive while Sam yells, “Drive, Dean!”

We also see Dean holding Bobby’s hand, him yelling at someone to ‘Save him” and Sam looking like he is praying. High emotional stuff for Friday.  

Both are still at the hospital so whatever happens on the ‘high stakes’ mission, TPTB are keeping seriously under wraps.  The CW, as of this writing, has not released any other clips of the episode.

Will Bobby die… maybe, but regardless a head injury is not going to heal over night.  Should he survive, there will be some serious convalescing needed and Bobby will be out of commission for a while.  One more item the leviathans have taken from the boys.  No wonder they have a huge grudge against them!

Executive Producer Robert Singer directed the episode and, of course, he is not new to “Supernatural.”  He has been with the series for all of its 7 yr history and during that time produced 148 episodes and directed 21 of them.  His credits include “Phantom Traveler,” “All Hell Breaks Loose” parts 1 and 2, and last year’s finale, “The Man Who Knew Too Much.”  

Executive producer and show runner Sera Gamble penned the episode, her 26th for the series. She has written “Exile on Main Street,” “Appointment in Samarra,” “Let it Bleed,” and this season’s premier “Meet the New Boss.”
