CW Announces New Shows and More Renewals – Supernatural Likely To Stay Put on Fridays
All TV news is focused on the Upfronts this week and while we anxiously wait for the Supernatural two hour season finale on Friday, we’ve got to entertain ourselves somehow.
The CW has officially picked up 4 new series for Fall. They are Secret Circle, Hart of Dixie, H8R and Ringer. The first two are no surprise and have been part of the CW’s buzz list in Pilot season for a while now. Secret Circle is based on books written by the same person that wrote The Vampire Diaries books. Not surprisingly, the series was developed by Kevin Williamson, Executive Producer of The Vampire Diaries. It’s considered to be a slam dunk to follow The Vampire Diaries on Thursday.
Hart of Dixie is about a young doctor having issues with her small town practice. Think Doc Hollywood for women.
H83R came out of nowhere yesterday. It’s a reality show that in which haters meet the celebrities that they hate. The CW is really high on it though, more so than any other reality show we’ve seen in a while so I’m filing that under the “wait and see” category.
Ringer is the shock. That pilot wasn’t even developed for The CW. It was on CBS’ list! It’s a thriller starring cult queen Sarah Michelle Gellar (duh, Buffy) and The CW certainly sounds like a better fit for that show than CBS. Just the star alone should get a lot of eyeballs on that one. Apparently the pilot was developed by CBS Studios in conjunction with ABC Studios. ABC pulled out the second the show was picked up by The CW, so now Warner Brothers becomes the other partner. Just like almost all the other shows developed for The CW.
The CW also officially renewed One Tree Hill and Nikita. As you recall, a few weeks ago Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, America’s Next Top Model, Gossip Girl, and 90210 were renewed. Hellcats has been cancelled, so now Tom Welling is out of a job as both an actor and a producer. I’m sure he’ll be fine.
As you can tell, that’s 11 shows and 10 slots. Rumor has it One Tree Hill will be saved for midseason. Rumor also is at the Upfront Presentation on Thursday The CW will announce this is One Tree Hill’s last season.
Rumor also has it that as of now, Supernatural is staying put Fridays at 9pm. So what will join it on Fridays? Either Nikita or repeats. Nikita also seems like it might be a good pairing with Ringer, but without knowing the demographic target of Ringer I can’t say for sure. Nikita and Supernatural attract similar audiences, both male and female, so they most likely will be put together. We’ll know for sure on Thursday.
Until then, IS IT FRIDAY YET??????
(For nostalgia sakes, here’s the one and only time Jared, Jensen, and Tom Welling went to a CW upfront party. Season two Supernatural, Season six Smallville. Yes, that’s the kid from Everybody Hates Chris. Photo courtesy of J-Padalecki.org).
My guess is they kept SPN where it is due to the success it has had there AND because of its content.
I don’t really know what they would pair with it that would go well with it. It’s really hard to say.
Here’s some more info, even though I know only of few of you get dorky about this scheduling thing like me!
Deadline.com is reporting that any remaining CW pilots without a pickup are dead, The CW picked up two more reality shows, likely for midseason and filling in repeat gaps, and Nikita is indeed going to Fridays with Supernatural. Hart of Dixie will likely be paired with Gossip Girl.
awh!!! my boys are soooo weet… I love jensen? can’t wait ’till friday
I’m curious about what this means for the Supernatural writing team– guess they’ll be be bringing in someone new. I’m assuming Charmelo & Snyder will leave to head Ringer’s team? Can’t say I was overwhelmed by their stuff on SPN (Mannequin 3–ack) but am interested to see how Ringer turns out, especially with such a strong lead.
Charmelo and Snyder are most definitely gone. I wasn’t upset about that one bit. I hope they’re much better with writing new and original characters than trying to do an established show like Supernatural. I don’t think they quite got what this show and what the characters were all about. Their episodes were among the weakest.
I don’t know really about next season. I’m hoping Kripke will write some more. I have a feeling he’ll be back in the fold a bit more. I hope Dabb and Loflin come back too because they really hit their stride this season. When I’m at Comic Con, I’ll find out who the writing team is. Or maybe even before.
& thanks for the pic Alice, it’s so cute! I still miss Everybody hates Chris
