Welcome Pragmatic Dreamer and How Does One Write For The WFB?
Yes, it’s me doing announcements again!
First, I’d like to officially welcome a new writer to our regular staff, Pragmatic Dreamer. She’s done a few guest submissions recently that have really become popular and she’s agreed to keep doing what she does for us on a regular basis. Take this chance to welcome her. Her new author page is up but her bio is still pending, so yours truly improvised a bit until that happens. Check out the list of articles she’s submitted so far though for they’re all great reads.
Second, elle2, the first official writer for The Winchester Family Business (other than myself), has decided to take an extended and possibly permanent break from writing right now. We wish her well and I personally am grateful to her for all her amazing work in the near two years she was with us. She certainly deserves a medal of honor for that. Hopefully she’ll pop in here and there to say hi, even if it’s in our comments section.
Writers announcements are the perfect segue into another topic I’ve been meaning to discuss lately. You see, we’re growing. A lot. Some of you may have noticed. Each month draws more visitors than the last. In January, we actually celebrated our two year anniversary. You didn’t know that? I don’t blame anyone, for I’m not one for a lot of fanfare unless Supernatural wins something or gets that oh so elusive renewal that’s surely happening but still hasn’t become official. 🙁 Considering this site started with one blogger (aka me) raving a few days a week about a cult show nobody watches using a basic grey blogger’s template that made articles impossible to read without a magnifying glass, things have certainly changed.
Anyway (yes Alice, quit rambling), the demand to upkeep our unique original content has become great. You all might have also noticed there’s been some new writers popping up around here. I’ve been getting a lot of messages lately, how does one become a writer for The Winchester Family Business? Well first, is there an article you want to share? It’s always been our policy to be open to any guest submissions. During Hellatus times, we have a lot of open space in our posting schedule and I’m often getting articles that range from deeply analytical all the way to flipping crazy! Any articles submitted are reviewed for accuracy, grammar, and whether or not they’re violating our site rules (aka, no Sam vs. Dean stuff). If a guest article passes that test, I’ll post it.
Beyond that, you’ve got to prove that you not only can write, but have well written ideas that will gain an audience. On the 4th submission, I’ll do a little check. If the previous articles submitted have done well, I’ll get with said guest author and ask if he or she wants to keep writing for us. You’d be amazed how some say no, for writing on a regular basis is really hard. If that person says yes though, an invitation to come aboard happens.
Once you become a writer, your name stays on that WFB Writers board forever because you have a history with us. I take our archives very seriously. In two years, we have posted around 1100 articles, give or take a dozen. That’s a history I’m extremely proud of and once your name is part of it, it stays that way!
So, if you’re ever interested in having an article posted, contact me through the “Contact Us” section and we can discuss from there how to get your article posted. In the meantime, if you see a lot of new writers, now you know why! After all, this is a wildly creative fandom that can’t be held back.

Alice Jester is the founder, editor-in-chief, head writer, programmer, web designer, site administrator, marketer, and moderator for The Winchester Family Business. She is a 30 year IT applications and database expert with a penchant for creative and freelance writing in her spare (ha!!) time. That’s on top of being a wife, mother of two active kids, and four loving (aka needy) pets.
Welcome Pragmatic Dreamer – I think you are gonna feel at home here.
And I’m really sorry Elle2 is leaving, she has such an insight that is gonna be missed, but maybe once in a while, she might grant us some of her great writing.
First, funny you noticed TV For The Rest of Us. We just spent this evening giving the site it’s own domain! We had to take it down for a half hour. It’s now it’s own site. http://www.tvfortherestofus.com. I just fixed the link on the recommended sites. I’m going to be upgrading and regularly posting on the site very soon. I’ll be covering TV events at C2E2 in a few weeks and will be posting all that coverage there.
How was the WFB founded? If you go to WFB writers and look up my bio, most of the story is there. The Winchester Family Business was a column I started on blogcritics and I started the site because I wanted more than a column on blogcritics. Lucky for me, I’m a computer application specialist in my day job and I built this site. I’ve slowly added more and more features and did a complete redesign of the site over a year ago from the old grey basic template to what you see today.
What’s cool is this site keeps catching on. Just when I think it’s plateaued or gone as far as I could take it, the WFB continues to grow in popularity. When we make the TV Guide article, site traffic exploded. Every month beats the prior month in traffic and February was no exception. It’s quite amazing how my crazy idea of building a site for those of us that like a fan friendly environment that allows fans to deeply analyze and discuss this show has gotten so many followers. I guess I stumbled onto a need.
That’s what I want TV For The Rest of Us to be. A site that does exactly what we do here but for other TV shows. It’s going to be quite an uphill battle to get that one going though because there are soooo many TV sites out there.
Welcome Pragmatic Dreamer!
Alice, I’m so happy for you on how much your site has grown.
Elle2 I’m really going to miss you around here. All the best to you.
Welcome to the fold, Pragmatic Dreamer!
Elle2, thanks so much for everything you have done for the site, and I hope you enjoy your break. Don’t be a stranger!
