“You Can’t Handle The Truth” – A Visual Review
9.
Oh, god, his face! He’s crushed. And yet it’s also like part of him expected this outcome, is amazed it didn’t happen sooner. And you almost can hear his low self-esteem going, “why on earth did you think you could have something good? You knew you’d screw it up sooner or later.”

This right here is a perfect visual representation of where these two are right now. Dean is on the bed drinking coffee and eating a doughnut in his t-shirt and socks, aka normal, while Sam is watching the Ashley Frank footage with laser focus. He doesn’t even move for hours and hours. He barely seems to blink! Dean is bored out of his mind, but Sam just keeps sitting there.

Sam it just so intense! I can’t believe he even moved enough to take his shirt off. And Dean’s been resting a bit at least because the covers on his bed are pulled back, but not Sam’s. Makes you wonder how much he’s sleeping. Also, doughnuts and pepperoni pizza? Dean’s diet is horrendous. It upsets my stomach just thinking about it. Lastly, here we have more light streaming through a window. That’s been a big visual theme this season so far.

This is a really cool shot of that spiral staircase in Veritas’ house with the amazing light fixture. It looks like stars falling from the ceiling! I love it.

This is amazingly gruesome. Ugh, that dismembered corpse is just hanging there! And that looks so real, doesn’t it? Again, I’m tipping my hat to the prop department. The gore in this episode was really fantastic, wasn’t it?
14.
I love the light in this shot, just shining on the rope and the knife and Sam’s hands. I really like all these half-lit shots we have in this show. They just seem so dramatic, and it’s kind of rare on TV to have so much of your action take place in shadows, to let your actors be obscured so much of the time.

Before the fight, I pretty much thought Sam had it coming. After what he’d done, he deserved to get hit at least once. But then he asked for help, and that just ruined me. I knew Dean was still going to hit him, especially after he put the knife down, but I just kept thinking, “Dean, don’t hit him after he asked for help! Then it’s just as bad as when Sam hit you in “When the Levee Breaks” when you had that tear running down your face.” But of course he hit him anyway. And then he just kept on hitting him, all the rage and frustration and pain and fear just pouring out through his fist. It was brutal. But Dean still doesn’t know what’s going on with Sam, not really. So while he realizes that he went too far, he still thinks that Sam could be some sort of monster. Veritas said so herself. She said Sam wasn’t human. But if Sam really is human, albeit with no soul? Then Dean is going to have to come to grips with the fact that he just destroyed his brother. Not some monster or some creature. His brother. And Dean needs another reason to hate himself like he needs a hole in the head.
Okay, so that was “You Can’t Handle the Truth.” What did you guys think of this episode? Did I leave out any of your favorite shots?
Hey, Flamey, another wonderful visual review… Thank you, dear! It’s always putting an ‘awwwwh’ in my heart…
I thought you’d notice the cats- bits… Ha! I bet Merry and Pippin guided your hand with this 😉

Great review :-)Does anyone else have this question?the calendar shows October 2010…so far the show was at ”present” time until last season…now a year have passed…now at supernatural world it must be 2011??right?
Vicky, I noticed the current calendar, too! That would of put the season 5 finale in the early fall of 2009…weird.
Great visual review!
There is one more visual I wished you had included- when Sam and Dean get knocked out by Veritas and fall on the ground under the skinned body, they are lying in perfect symetry, facing each other with a puddle of blood between their faces, dripping from the suspended body.
This is a very nice visual recap. Thank you. 🙂
I especiallly liked #1, #2, #5 and #12.
