Next up a sports question: Which did he like the Gator or Seminole football teams?
He relied that he was a Gator hater for sure, apologizing to anyone from Gainesville. Though he was born and raised in Miami, he was never really a U of Miami fan just because it’s a private school and he figured he would never get there anyway. Then he went to Tallahassee and football there was a way of life there. He played high school football with the intent to play college football. He had an opportunity to play for a smaller school in S Florida or take an academic scholarship. He when for the academic one and doesn’t regret it because he ended up at a SPN convention with the best fans in the world! ? (Flattery will get you everywhere!) He continued he could either be here or probably sitting on the bench somewhere at a provisional one school that he has never played for…because he was just not THAT good. He ended by saying, “Great question.â€
Nest question brought a few laughs from the fans. Question: I was wondering what’s the funniest/craziest thing a fan has ever done to you.
After few seconds, Matt asks, “How old are you?†Thirteen was the reply. That brought a few wooos from the fans, laughs, and a few uh-ohs from the people sitting around me. Matt asks another question, “Are your parents here?†That brought more laughs from the audience, especially when the answer was, no. Matt replied that he couldn’t even say it. “Can you try?†queried the fan. Much to the dismay of the fan, Matt decided to the second craziest. Playing along with the fan, MC claimed that a fan once asked him to take her virginity (That brought a roar from the fans), continuing he said, by virginity he meant her first kiss. That brought a resounding, ‘Yes…sure’ from the 13 year old, and a lot of laughs from the crowd. She was a kissing virgin, MC continued, and he wouldn’t do it because he believe in creating a relationship first, meaning her father. “A, yea…I can totally by thatâ€, said the fan. MC’s parting words, “Thank you …..for turning me as red as your friend’s shirt.â€
Back we go to SPN. Question: Obviously on the show you are young John and Michael, if you could play anyone else on the show, who would it be?
Matt would have to say young Mary. Surprised, the fan relied, “that’s your choice?†Yep, it is. She is a killer, she is awesome, she’s a beautiful, young hunter…she kicks butt and she looks good doing it. His motto in life is like if you not going to be good at something, at least try to look good doing it. And she does both those things. He would happily be young Mary, or even the regular Mary.
Can you talk a little bit about the psycho killer in Boogieman 2 and then the latest thing where you [did the] scarefest film as well?
Jokingly MC talked about how they just absolutely typecast the normal Matt Cohen. He’s really a serial killer and right now he was just playing a character on stage. In reality Boogieman 2 was his first film, and for the audition he was just playing this guy Henry Porter, who is a normal kid. Then once they casted him they were like oh yea, BTW you have to have a split personality disorder and try to kill your sister, which Matt felt was awesome. Most of the movie is him playing Henry Porter until one of the final scenes where he’s in a basement hallway teeter-tottering on which personality he was….caring about my sister or trying to kill her. In preparation for this he didn’t eat or drink for days, he lived off coffee, about 6 cups of coffee a day, because he wanted to see what it takes to make someone go crazy. He had heard that after 3-4 days of fasting you would develop a strange blissful state. And it worked…sort of. After the last day of production, 18hr, he went straight to the hospital, he was dehydrated, he had to have an IV in both arms, and his throat was swollen shut. BUT, he proudly said, “The scene looked good.†The director and editor just said he could do what he wanted with it. So he did, but doesn’t recommend any actor doing anything like that, and he won’t again for sure. “It was my first movie and not my best but I gave it all I had in the [most] realist way I could find to bring that character. So you have to see it, but definite eat when making movies…drink waterâ€, he concluded.
Question: If you could throw a dinner party for 3 quests living or dead? Who would they be?
Matt didn’t have to think to hard on the first choice, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He said he was dying to meet Jeffrey as he has kind of felt he is JDM sometimes when he’s in Vancouver. The other two were Marylyn Monroe and Lincoln.
The next fan told MC that it was really important for him to say ‘yes’ to her first question because she had sort of built up a fantasy moment around it. She had been in the hotel gym that morning, and could have thought he was there too. When Matt relied that he had been, the fan said, “You looked really good.†Matt’s response, “Anyone have foundation to cover up these red cheeks here? I look like a shiny red tomato up here.†Smiling the fan continued, “It was awesome.†Her second question: would you like to breathe like Darth Vader, or talk like Yoda for the rest of his life.
Matt’s reply – Yoda for sure. While MC love dressing in black…all the best character do, Johnny Cash, Darth Vadar the lead in Planet of the Apes, not too many people can be Yoda’s size and handle a light saber like he does. He [Yoda] is cute and ugly at the same time, creates his own way of speaking which Matt felt that was awesome. So did the audience….a lot!
Next fan want to know what was his favorite music was or if he had a favorite song right now?
Matt likes everything pretty much except country. He doesn’t listen to that, and the fan agreed. He [MC] respects country singers, he respects any musician, or any musical musician far more than he does actors because they have to pour their heart out to be good, and country singers tend to pour their hearts out all the time. But the lyrics, for him, can be hard to follow at times.
A very interesting question this one, and I loved MC’s answer. Question: I was wondering if you think there are real hunters out there in the world.
Musingly, MC replied that he thinks it would be foolish to believe there aren’t real hunters out there. Joking with the fan, he thought she might be one hunter actually by the way she had asked that question. That got a big smile from the fan. He continued to say there had been some talk about him [MC] coming back as a demon, so he had to ask her to stay behind the microphone. The group thought that was a riot. On a more serious note MC continued. “I believe because believing in stuff is fun and it makes life worth living.†He didn’t believe that people could say there weren’t aliens, demons, or angels or ghosts or even leprechauns (Hmmmm…interest he would mention them, as we all know they will be one of the MOTW the boys get to hunt this season…compliments of Ben Edlund, of course) around, or that there aren’t hunters hunting them. No one knows that. Believing in angels and demons is fine…to the fan directly, he said, “I believe it because it makes live more culpable.â€
Excellent question next: What do you think of John Winchester as a father?
Well, began MC …according to the scene with him and Sam, young John didn’t think very much of John. You know the kind of scene like ‘what father puts his kids in harms way, yada yada, yada’. But when it came right down to it, MC thinks he was a great father. He did what he had to do, and that’s it. “Some time in life you have to make choices and you might be right or wrong, but who’s to say what is right or wrong. Who made up the hand book on being a father and the decisions you make? He’s a good guy who just had it rough, I think.†That got a solid round of applause for Matt, including yea’s, and alright’s from everyone, and well it should have. JW and JDM are very still very popular with fans.
The next fan thanked Matt for being here and thought he was an awesome guy. Very graciously, MC thanked the audience for having him in Chicago. He continued that if it wasn’t for fans, he wouldn’t be here. Her question: When you got the part of young John, did you know that there were SPN conventions, and when you found out what did you think when you heard we wanted you to come and meet the fans?
MC replied, jokingly, “I thought…what a minute, I have fans? (Of course that got the crowd going). No, he didn’t. Honestly when he signed on to do SPN he had no idea there were conventions. He had no idea how amazing the following and support for the show was. When he did the London convention (his first), and someone asked him who makes you star-struck, he had to say the fans. (That got a lot of awes from the crowd.) He felt the fact that someone wanted him to stand on a stage and talk about weird stuff that he really didn’t know what he was saying, and that we cared to listen, gave him goose bumps. There is no better feeling than having…..stars support YOU. (Okay this got to me. How sweet is that! And the fans let out very lot cheers and whoops for him) He continued by saying people, actors, and celebrities, underestimate and overlook the power of support. No body, not one actor would have a job, if it wasn’t for the support of the fans. It’s like the most important thing and there is nothing that feels better. He continued,â€I literally get giddy every time I come on stage and get to talk to you guys. It’s an amazing feeling and I thank you all.†(Okay…yea…that brought the house down….loud enough to shake the hotel in my opinion. :-))
After the whoops and wails died down, the next question was just plain FUN. It you weren’t JW or Michael, what kind of monster would you like to play on the show?
At first he thought maybe the YED, but then decided he would like to create his own monster, he would like to just delve into a different world. Stating that’s a question the fans should answer, he asked them what they thought. Shout outs I heard– shape shifter and demon. Querying what would the ultimate shape shift be, he decided he would love to shape shifter into Marilyn Monroe, and the dress and the spinning. (Roar from crowd.) He said he could take people’s live with the sharp edge of his dress as he’s spinning around. As Marilyn – “Hi I’m Marilyn. Whossh! He says as he spins on stage. I don’t know what happened; I just decapitated you with my awesome spin. Sorry.†That prompted a lot of cheers. MC does appeal to the fans very well, especially when you have this awesome mutual admiration thing between them. 🙂
Now back to a serious question: Fan: If you were a dad, what would be your best dad advice?
MC said the best advice he have ever received from his father was to never start something you’re not going to finish. And it’s true. When he started acting, it was one of the hardest things he had ever done. ‘People were like, ah yea…no… your never going to work in this town….they will hate you.’ And you have to deal with so much rejection on a daily basis, but you stay in it long enough and you keep it everything you’ve got, until you get what you want. He finished, “There is no reason to give 1% of your energy on something you’re not going to give 100% too. Live is too short to waste a second.â€
Question: J&J are always picking on each other and making pranks, have they ever done that to you or have you every done that to them?
Matt admitted they didn’t play any jokes on him, and he did admit to the crowd after a while, that he did fell sort of left out on one hand and sort of glad on the other. Fortunately, they didn’t pick on him too much, and that they had been really nice to him. Everybody else got there’s from the J2s though, because as soon as you yell cut, Jensen says some witty remark to the director and Jared plays it up.
Here Creation told him 5 min, so he tried to get to as many more questions as he could.
Question: Have you had any kind of a paranormal experience.
Yes he did… it’s a long story but he quickly replied that his grandfather passed last August and he gets paranormal experiences about him, not visual, but he just can feeling that someone it there. It happens often, and it happens consistently, so he’s a believer. (Gives add meaning to the MC’s answer to the previous fan’s ‘hunter’ question, huh.
He was then asked if he had any behind the scene ‘hook-ups’ with actress on the various projects he worked on.
His first response was a resounding no, but did admit on the first show he ever had, he met his finance. They played best friends on the show, and she is still his best friend now 6 year later. Awe.
Last question: If you ever got to guest on TB or TVD would you want to be a vampire or werewolf?
Either/or MC said, but he’d like the werewolf aspect of it. He added he almost got to play the part of Sam Merlot younger brother on True Blood, but his dark coloring kept him from the part.
Creation ended the panel then. Mc’s parting words, “I’m taking off… I’m out of here, I want to say thanks you, not enough words in my body to say thank you for letting me be here, letting me talk to you, asking me all these questions and giving me all these sympathy laughs. I appreciate it. You guys are amazing, keep doing what your doing, it’s important, it’s a great show. Of course he departed too a huge round of applause.
SO ended my first SPN panel and it was a pleasure to be there….great panel, great personality. I can see why he is such a HUGH draw to the SPN conventions. He is a LOT of fun, and so at ease with the fans, and makes nervous fan feel at ease with him. I was so glad that he was doing a second panel on Saturday. That one was a riot too…. ?
Hope you enjoyed the read!

Thank you; I enjoyed reading your report. 🙂
I too hope we see more of young Mary and John in Season 6, although it’s hard to think of a scenario where they might appear (particularly since Samuel is alive).
Sablegreen,
Love these reports, thank you so much for working so hard while you were at the Con. I really like how Mr. Cohen has embraced the show and its fans in this manner and am very glad that the crowd responded so enthusiastically to his John as father comments — which I think were excellent. John is popular as is JDM and as much as I like Mr. Cohen as young John, my big, big, big wish for SPN is that JDM will return somehow.
Awesome report2
Really enjoyed reading your comments on the panel questioning of Matt Cohan. Always head for your articles. Am seriously thinking about attending the Chicago convention next year.
