SUPERNATURAL: Behind the Scenes With Set Design and the Impala from the TVAddict!

Rest of the article you can read there where they talk about the bunker and Impala also.

For the last several years we’ve had an opportunity to visit the SUPERNATURAL set in Vancouver and a highlight of our trip is a chance to take a behind the scenes tour with various members of the production crew to learn more about the design of the sets and how they take care of the signature Impala.

This year we had an opportunity to tour the Men of Letters bunker, the alternate dimension’s burned-out church where Michael seems to enjoy torturing people, and a motel that will appear in an upcoming episode of the show. In addition, we saw the Impala and learned more about how the show uses movie magic to tricks fans into thinking the Winchester brothers are driving down various streets.

During our interviews with the crew, we gleaned some behind the scenes tidbits to share with fans. Browse through our photos above to learn them all.

According to Production Designer Jerry Wanek, this church in the alternate dimension was originally “written as just another concrete bunker and I hate that, so it gives me the sort of creative license to take the story a little further and that’s what we did.” This church will appear in several episodes, having first been seen in episode 13.07 when Michael was torturing Lucifer. We’ve seen from a preview for the midseason finale that Mary will also be held here.

Wanek enjoyed creating a large church steeple where the Iron Maiden took the place of a bell, because “there’s some swing to it”. It was originally just written as a “cage off the ground and this is what we came up with.” The size of the Iron Maiden device is also “adjustable”, depending on the size of the actor inside it.

There’s a lot of space between the boards of the various walls in the church, but when you add in atmosphere and light you get really cool shafts of light, called “God rays”. All of this was purposeful when the crew was designing the place.

This shot shows the level of detail that goes into the sets, from the coloring of the alter to burning the wax of the candles to make the scenes look more authentic.

Wanek explained that they’re lucky on SUPERNATURAL because the production crew has a lot of freedom “to take [the sets] to a place where we think is appropriate, as opposed to just being dictated [to].”

A beautiful fresco painting near the altar of the church.

A door on the inside of the church leads to a room off to the side of the building.

These spikes are seen sticking out of the ground in the alternate dimension that Mary and Lucifer were trapped in at the beginning of season 13. Wanek told us that they were modeled to look like the a familiar weapon on the show. “They’re the same exact shape and dimension as an angel blade.” Some of the ones on location were even 20 feet tall.

The Del Ray Motel set will appear in an upcoming episode of SUPERNATURAL.

For this motel room they wanted to do a design that was “mid-century. Then we started looking for things [that fit the motif].” They started looking through wallpaper books and settled on the paper here, and settled on a graphic print for the floors.

Wanek had built well over 150 motel sets in the earlier years of the show before the bunker was introduced because SUPERNATURAL was really a “road show”.

They make the rooms a bit bigger than normal motel rooms to allow for the cameras and also for fight sequences.

A cool retro looking clock is on the wall of the Del Ray Motel.

In the early years of the show, Warner Brothers had the idea to make a deal with Motel 6 and to feature those rooms in the show, but Wanek wasn’t a fan of that idea. He believed that the only way to show the region where the brothers were traveling to was to “put something in the motel that shows [the fans] you’re in, you know, Louisiana. [Or] you’re in Arizona.”

Jerry Wanek peeks at us from behind the motel screen.
The show used to do a lot of iconic and funny looking screens in their motel rooms, particularly in the early years. The screens are also “a great way to introduce something because you can shoot through them. So it’s a great way to establish what the room looks like.”
Several of the more distinctive screens have made their way to the art department’s offices where they are used as dividers between the desks.

These cells in Asmodeus’ lair are where Lucifer and Castiel are currently being held captive.

Supernatural's Alexander Calvert Has the Greatest Cat Instagram on the Internet

But he had nothing to worry about. The Vancouver native has been widely well-received by fans, capturing their hearts with his character's adorable affinity for nougat and determination to do good with his inexplicable powers, regardless of their nefarious origins. Honestly, it's not hard to fall for Calvert: He's hot, a dancer–he studied musical theatre dance and hip hop until he was encouraged to start acting at the age of 15–and co-owns the best, most regal cat on Instagram:

We spoke with Alex about the explosive midseason finale of Supernatural, his first-ever fan convention, and the Miniature Persian himself, Lord Tyrion.

So Jack has reunited with Sam and Dean, only to be separated again when they utilize Jack's new power. Are we going to be doing a lot of world jumping? Because it seems like Sam and Dean are stuck in dinosaur land, while Jack's with Mary in apocalypse world...

Yea, Jack’s powers are definitely opening up tons of new possibilities for the show, especially the potential for world-jumping, finding new characters, and finding old characters.

Speaking of new characters, this episode introduces Kaia, who we know will be on Supernatural's spinoff Wayward Sisters. Based on your powerful connection with her, do you think we'll see Jack crossing over into that series?

I have no idea what they’re doing with that show [laughs]. I’m at their mercy. I just think that Jack and Kaia had a really interesting relationship and I really enjoyed shooting that stuff with her because they had so many similarities in terms of what they were dealing with and going through, especially with her being unable to control her powers. It was fun to see Jack kind of foster a new relationship and really help guide her along her path.

We learn, once and for all, in this episode that Jack has no feelings towards Lucifer whatsoever–which is good for the boys to know. but how would you characterize his relationships at this point with Sam, Dean, and Castiel?

I mean, what I really like about this episode is we definitely don’t know where Jack fits yet. But the fun part about this season, I think, has been him realizing what the true concept of a family actually is. Not necessarily who you’re real father is or you know say your mother, but in this case the people that really love and care about you become his surrogate family, and it was really nice to have that moment in the episode.

What was it like joining a show that's already been on the air for 13 seasons–especially one with such a strong following?

Pretty daunting. I wanted to be as respectful and delicate as possible, just because people have grown up with these characters, you know? They’ve gone on just this massive journey. So, I just wanted to work well in the machine that already exists. The fan base has been really welcoming and incredible so far, and it’s just nice to be a part of something that people are so passionate about.

Had you watched the show before you were cast?

No. That’s kind of the crazy part. I’m from Vancouver, so I’d see the signs for filming. I mean, I’ve been seeing the signs since I was 15. So, it was kind of strange to finally be a part of the show that I feel like I’ve grown up around and seen people go through around me.

What was it like when you met your co-star Misha Collins and you realized you look exactly like him?

I didn’t really clue into it at first. I was just like 'Oh like it’s great, I get to meet Misha! I finally get to meet Castiel.' But then, people started sending me these photos at various points in me and Misha’s life, where our faces are looking the exact same direction. We have a similar expression on our faces. Initially, I didn’t really know what to think, but then I’ve seen so many of these photos now that I’m kind of blown away. I actually can’t believe it myself.

It’s weird. Like it’s tripping me out, you know?

An official statement from Deadline.

One of the sturdiest CW ratings performer — linearly and digitally — has been veteran Supernatural, currently in its 13th season. It’s become a TCA tradition to check on the future prospects of the series, which has repeatedly defied expectations.

Noting that he and his CW team are not ready to announce renewal decisions yet, “next year would be Supernatural‘s 300th episode which is remarkable,” Pedowitz told Deadline. “That show will go on as long as it keeps going, the boys (stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) keep doing it and the ratings keep holding.”

This season, Supernatural is also tasked with introducing a potential spinoff, Wayward Sisters, starring the original series’ standout Kim Rhodes in an episode that airs a week from Thursday.

“I’ve seen it, I like it but the fans determine,” Pedowitz said. While the first attempt at a Supernatural spinoff, Bloodlines, “did not work at all, this one has an opportunity to work,” he said. “Nothing is perfect but the real question is whether fans will go watch it if the boys aren’t in it. I don’t know but it works, the characters work, Kathryn Newton is a real star, the actress who plays Donna (Briana Buckmaster) is hilarious.”

'Supernaturals' Lucky Number 13 And The Future Of The Show from The Odyssey Online!

Lucky number 13 seems to be working out well for the Winchester brothers. During the winter hiatus in December of 2017, it was reported by TVLine that "Supernatural," even in its 13th season, was ranked as The CW's #2 series (behind "The Flash";) and beating out fan favorites like "Riverdale" and the majority of the network's superhero slate.

The CW's ability to be the "only broadcast network to hold steady in the demo year over year" is largely thanks to the longest running genre TV show in the United States remaining as steady as it has.

Also near the end of 2017, Twitter began releasing a variety of stats revolved around popular tweets as well as entertainment. In their list for the 10 TV shows that were tweeted about the most in 2017, "Supernatural" earned the respectable 9th most tweeted series slot for the year. Other series on the list included "Grey's Anatomy," "The Walking Dead," "Stranger Things" and "Game of Thrones" earning the number one slot.

Season 13 has been particularly ambitious, especially with the new fan-driven spinoff attempt, "Wayward Sisters." Showrunner Andrew Dabb, writer Robert Berens and director Phil Sgriccia's backdoor pilot episode -- starring Kim Rhodes, Briana Buckmaster, Kathryn Newton, Yadira Guevara-Prip, Katherine Ramdeen and Clark Backo -- received a strong response on social media and pulled in 1.87 million viewers, "earning a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic," which is a solid launch of The CW's likely new venture.

The ratings continued to climb, with episode 13x11, "Breakdown," bringing in 1.95 million viewers and remaining steady in the 18-49 demographic rating with a 0.6, drawing in "the biggest audience the show has had since" the season 13 premiere. The strong numbers are an impressive sign in the middle of the season, and it also speaks to the content fans are most excited about and what makes them stick around.

The episode was promoted as the Winchester brothers working a disturbing case alongside fan favorite Donna Hanscum (played by Briana Buckmaster), who nailed a darker side to the usually bubbly character. Most importantly, the monster-of-the-week, or MOTW, episode spoke directly to the horror tone that this show was built on (besides our favorite hunting duo, Sam and Dean, at the core) and want to see more of.

Although the series continues to thrive, fans have to wonder how much longer the stars, Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) and Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester), will want to go on. The show has been running since 2005, and the boys have always been invested in the series and love their characters as much as the fans do, meaning the inevitable end, no matter when it comes, will be painful for all involved.

Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, has been a huge supporter of the series since taking over his role at the network. His support, as well as the recent announcement that he extended his deal with the network to remain the top executive at The CW, bodes well for "Supernatural." In fact, as has become the norm in recent years, Pedowitz once again confirmed that as long as the ratings hold, the continuation of the show is up to Jared and Jensen.

Recently, costar Rob Benedict appeared on episode 10 of actor Greg Grunberg's podcast, "An Actor, a Comedian and a Musician Walk Into a Bar," and talked about how "[Jared and Jensen] wanna go next season and maybe a season after that, too. I mean, they'll keep going."

Greg, who has known Rob for many years after they worked together on the TV series, "Felicity" from 1998-2002, spoke about his relationship with Jared and Jensen saying, "The two guys, the two leads, I mean, you would not be hanging out with these guys if they weren't good guys."

Rob praised his friends, saying: "They're incredible dudes," to which Greg responded that he hears that from everybody. This comes as no surprise to fans, as we've been hearing this from cast, crew and guest stars for years.

Rob: "They're great guys and, you know, if they lived in LA we'd get them on this podcast. One of the reasons I think they're so magical is that they don't live here. They don't shoot here. They've avoided the whole LA thing completely, which is kinda cool, ya know?"

Greg: "Yeah. Wait, where does the show shoot?"

Rob: "Vancouver. And they live in [Austin] Texas, these guys..."

Greg: "...And have you ever flown with them on their private jet?"

Rob: "I have, I have, I have. They're very generous guys, that's the other thing. Like, they don't let you pay for anything when you're with them. They're just amazing, generous, and so it trickles down from them, truly."

Lynn Zubernis' interview with guest star Brendan Taylor confirms that even after all this time, the boys are as invested as ever in the characters, making sure every actor and crew member feels at home and that they help make each episode as good as the last.

Brendan discussed how, while filming 13x11, Jared and Jensen stuck around for his coverage (which is something we often hear about from other guest stars and cast members) in order to make sure he wasn't feeling pressured and allowing him to give his best performance in that comfortable space:

"I think it was both Jared and Jensen...they suggested, do you want to say that? Do you want to go back to the beginning of the scene? And you know, they're both off camera, it's not about them, the coverage is on me...And they're like, we'll go back. And that's the coolest thing about them being at the helm of the show. They're like okay, let's go back, and everyone just drops into line, the cameras move out of the way, it's like whatever needs to happen for the core of the scene."core of the scene."

As Lynn points out, after filming the show for so long, it would be easy for the two leads to not even care "about the show so much, or about the other actors' performances," but as this example (one of many) reveals, Jared and Jensen absolutely do still care and are still invested in the show, the characters, the cast, the crew and each other, working as a team to keep that tone on set thriving that we hear so much about. That, of course, includes always keeping things light while filming.

An exciting announcement was made that the "Supernatural" cast and creators are scheduled to appear at this years PaleyFest in Los Angeles on March 20th for the events' 35th anniversary. The "Supernatural" gang has made two prior appearances at PaleyFest, one in 2006 and another in 2011.

The big number on everyone's mind is 300, which is the episode milestone the show would reach in the 14th season which, as of this writing, has yet to be officially announced. Many fans are speculating the news will be announced at PaleyFest, but many are nervous there could be a possible announcement that the series is finally coming to an end.

Could the 14th season be the last?

Based on what Rob discussed on that podcast, it sounds like there is still hope for the show to go a bit longer than that. Also, as I reported on over a year ago, Jared and Jensen made it clear that 300 was never considered an endgame, but simply their next milestone that both seem eager to reach.

We'll have to wait and see what the future holds for the beloved series, but in the meantime, fans have plenty to look forward to this season still with the return of Rowena and the highly anticipated "Scooby-Doo" crossover episode that just recently finished filming.

Best of all? Danneel Ackles will be making her first, highly anticipated appearance on the show as Sister Jo, a faith healer who grabs the attention of Lucifer in episode 13x13, "Devil's Bargain."

Supernatural : Jensen Ackles Is Getting a New Character! from TV Guide!

When you consider that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have been playing Sam and Dean Winchester for 13 seasons of Supernatural by now, you kind of have to wonder how they've managed to keep the roles from getting stale after all that time. Padalecki has managed to keep things interesting by playing an assortment of characters other than just Sam over the years, but Ackles has mostly just stuck with Dean — until now, that is.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jensen Ackles revealed that he'll be stepping into the shoes of a new character this season, totally different from Dean Winchester.

"Over the years I've only ever had to just play Dean, whereas Jared has had to be Lucifer and Gadreel and all these different actual characters other than Sam. Dean never had to do that. He's only been Dean. The biggest stretch was Demon Dean but it was still Dean, it was just the demon version of himself, which I always love because it makes my job easier — I can just play the character I know," Ackles said. "That is all going to change soon. Something big's coming."

As far as hints go, "something big" is about as vague as it gets, which leaves us with too many guesses and not a lot of answers.

Here's When Supernatural, The Flash and More CW Shows End Their Seasons

There's always a chance that an alternate version of Dean is headed our way, given we've ventured into an alternate dimension this year, but that doesn't seem to fit the bill. Ackles has already played different version of Dean (the time travel episode showed us a post-apocalyptic Dean for example), and this character sounds entirely new.

A shapeshifter also feels like a subpar guess, since Ackles technically got to play one way back in Season 1. The shapeshifting idea does present us with a interesting possibility though, since it's a power Asmodeus (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), a Prince of Hell, possesses, and it looks like he could cross paths with the Winchesters soon.

The biggest question we have to raise from this bit of news is how long will Ackles be playing this new character? We're excited for him to tackle something new and all, but if we have to suffer through an extended arc with no Dean Winchester, we may actually die.

Supernatural: Jensen Ackles is finally going to play a character other than Dean from EW!

For the most part, Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have had similar experiences on the show. For 13 seasons now, they’ve each played a Winchester brother, and together, Sam and Dean have battled every kind of angel and demon imaginable. They’ve both died. They’ve both come back from the dead. They’ve both lost parents. They’ve both gotten a second chance at having a mom. You get the idea.

But there’s one major difference between Ackles and Padalecki’s experiences playing their characters …

As Ackles tells EW, “Over the years I’ve only ever had to just play Dean, whereas Jared has had to be Lucifer and Gadreel and all these different actual characters other than Sam. Dean never had to do that. He’s only been Dean. The biggest stretch was Demon Dean but it was still Dean, it was just the demon version of himself, which I always love because it makes my job easier — I can just play the character I know,” Ackles says, before adding, “That is all going to change soon. Something big’s coming.”

If you think that sounds ominous, well, welcome to Supernatural.

‘Supernatural’ EPs & Cast On Potential Season 14 Pick Up & What To Expect In The Remaining Episodes from Deadline!

https://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/supernatural.jpg

Season 14 aside, the stars offered some tidbits on what’s to come as the current season wraps May 3.

“Sam is okay,” Padalecki assured fans. “I think Sam has a problem where he focuses on his failures… it has been part of the archetype all along.” He expounded, “we see Sam go to the nth degree this season and really give it all he’s got to try to make the world a better place.”

“Dean was certainly out of sorts in the beginning. There was a lot of loss in his life and he was at a loss. He didn’t quite know which road to take,” said Ackles about his characters lack of motivation. “Luckily he’s not alone and has his brother to pick him up when he’s down…As we get closer to the end of the season we’ll see Dean step up in a big way.”

Supernatural's Jensen Ackles Tackles a New Character — and We've Got Clues! from TVLine!

https://pmctvline2.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/supernatural-spoilers1.jpg

Before this season of Supernatural is over, Jensen Ackles will be taking on a character other than Dean Winchester — and at the show’s PaleyFest event on Tuesday, TVLine gathered hints that it will be someone familiar to longtime fans.

Over the years, co-star Jared Padalecki has had the opportunity to play Lucifer, and Gadreel inhabiting Sam’s body, while Ackles has only ever portrayed Dean. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!) “The biggest stretch was Demon Dean, but it was still Dean,” he recently noted to EW.com. However, “that is all going to change soon,” he added. “Something big’s coming.”

And that something big will find Ackles playing someone viewers have seen before, “many years ago,” executive producer Robert Singer told TVLine on the PaleyFest red carpet. Meanwhile, EP Andrew Dabb predicted that fans will be both “happy and terrified” when they find out the identity of the character. Could it be the archangel Michael, for whom Dean was supposed to be the vessel in Season 5? “No comment,” Singer replied.

Whomever the character is, Ackles described the upcoming role switch as daunting and challenging, but also an opportunity he looks forward to tackling. “I’m going to have to do some research, and then I’m going to have to bring it,” he said.

“ScoobyNatural” Crossover Premiere: Supernatural Team Talks Animation, Archangels, and Apocalypses from The Mary Sue!

Speaking of Gabriel (Richard Speight Jr.) and the larger season arc, I asked the writers what sort of role we can expect the erstwhile archangel to play for the remainder of the season. Dabb made the assurance that, while some characters come back to Supernatural for one episode then disappear, “that is not the journey we’re taking Gabriel on. He’s he for a while. He’s going to be a big part of our story.” Writer and Co-Executive Producer Brad Buckner teased that “the actual mechanics of how he survived will be revealed in a kinda fun way; just keep in mind that Gabriel was the trickster and always has something up his sleeve.”

Buckner’s writing and producing partner, Eugenie Ross-Leming, hinted that this season is very much about redemption: “Everyone wants to redeem themselves … and Gabriel gets to do that. He’s pretty heroic.”

Does that mean there are others on a redemptive path this season? Maybe Satan? Well … it doesn’t sound like the turning of a new leaf for Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) is too likely, though according to Dabb, “Lucifer would very much like you to believe that.” We may keep seeing glimpses of good in Lucifer, as Ross-Leming teased, but it may not work out. One person learning some tough truths about the Prince of Darkness is his partner in his heavenly takeover, the angel Anael, a.k.a. sister Jo, played by Danneel Ackles (you may have heard of her husband). She revealed that things aren’t going great for Anael and Lucifer when we next meet them, and life back in heaven is “not going exactly like she thought it would go.”

We’ll see how it works, as Ross-Leming teased that Anael may prove she can turn her back on Lucifer. Someone else who’ll be dealing with their relationship to the devil is his son, Jack (Alexander Calvert), who will finally meet his father in episode 21 and spend some serious quality time with him in the following installment. Calvert revealed, “It’s such a complicated relationship, because he has a desire to truly know his father, but at the same time, he’s so lucky to be found by the Winchesters that he already has a family.”

Speaking of the Winchesters, after a bit of disagreements in recent episodes, Dean, Sam, and Castiel will come together to fight the good fight as the season enters its final run. According to Collins, “I think the phrase ‘team free will 2.0’ is apt. I think we band together and serve as a little militia in fighting spirit at the end of the season.” That team will include Gabriel, as well as everyone’s favorite witch, Rowena (Ruth Connell), who will continue to be a frenemy to the boys. Dean especially sounds very committed, according to Ackles: “There’s gonna be a moment of a kind of call to arms for him. And he’s gonna make a very difficult decision.” Could this have to do with the recent reveal that Ackles will be playing a character other than Dean soon? We’ll have to see.

Supernatural stars tease the Winchesters' reunion with Gabriel from EW!

Gabriel hasn’t been seen since that episode, but stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have confirmed to EW that the hunters will find out about Gabriel’s resurrection very soon.

“They can’t believe it. They’re thrilled [because] they need his help more than ever,” Padalecki told EW ahead of the CW drama’s PaleyFest panel Tuesday evening. “It’s very funny that we’re kind of harkening back to a lot of season 4, season 5, season 6 mythology and it feels so natural to be going back there, to be doubling back to Gabriel, to be doubling back to Lucifer. I’m just very excited to have Gabriel. He was sort of the last person we expected to have but now that he’s around, we need his help.”

Ackles added: “There’s a shock to it obviously, but given the things and the nature of what they’ve seen over the course of 13 years, there’s not a lot that really truly shocks these guys anymore. They’re a bit like war-torn heroes at this point, and it’s not totally unbelievable for anything to happen anymore. So I think it’s more excitement at the fact that, ‘Hey, we finally have somebody that we need and we can use this person, and now we have an ally that is very beneficial to have.’ So, it’s all about finding the angle.”

Not only will fans see Speight in front of the camera, but the actor also directed an episode in which he appears. “He directed and acted in the same episode, which is pretty cool and I’m sure a mindf— for him,” said Padalecki. “But he killed it, so it was nice.”

In addition to Gabriel’s reunion with the Sam and Dean, you can also expect Castiel (Misha Collins) — who killed the treacherous prophet Donatello in episode 14 — to remain in season 4 soldier mode for the time being. “He’s grown frustrated from the impotence of a sort of PC approach to things or a more measured diplomatic approach to things, and he just wants to go back into fighting mode. So that’s where we’re finding Cas right now,” Collins told EW on the red carpet. “I think for a long time Cas has been trying to do the right thing in a delicate and measured manner, relatively. I think he has found that it’s not working and that there have to be casualties along the way. It’s an interesting sort of turn for the character because it’s also justifiable.”

Looking ahead, executive producer Andrew Dabb also took a moment to tease this season’s finale, which doesn’t sound like it’s being treated as a possible series finale (Supernatural has yet to be renewed for a season 14, although Ackles is confident a renewal will happen). “This year’s finale I think evolves all our characters in a really interesting way,” said Dabb. “With this finale we close some doors, but we also open some interesting doors as well. All of our characters come out of it changed in a pretty big way.”

Desperate for any news on Supernatural. — Iain
Sam is going to be put through the wringer toward the end of the season — and Jared Padalecki spent many hours in the makeup chair because of it. “Let’s say Sam Winchester goes through trials and tribulations that leave him pretty beat up,” the actor says. “And at the risk of getting fired, that’s as far as I’ll go with it, but it was a long time.”

Question: Anything on the remaining episodes of Supernatural? —Claire
Ausiello: Executive producer Andrew Dabb promises not one but “two very surprising returns” before Season 13 is over, while EP Robert Singer confirms that “there’ll be an alternate universe” version of a character à la Alt Bobby and Alt Kevin Tran. Adds Singer: “A lot of the end of this season is getting the whole gang back together. Scheduling has been really difficult with everybody because they’re all working actors, but we’ve managed to cram pretty much everybody that the audience loves into this final run of episodes

Supernatural: Jack's First Meeting with Lucifer Will Be Intense from TV Guide! (video)

For those who have been dying to see Jack (Alexander Calvert) come face-to-face with Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) on Supernatural, you're finally going to get your wish. The young nephilim is going to meet his father at long last! Although we don't know when the big meeting will take place this season, we do know that first encounter will come with a lot of emotional baggage.

Despite forging a strong bond with Castiel (Misha Collins) and the Winchesters (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles), meeting the former King of Hell is something that has weighed on Jack's mind over the course of the season. After all, he's still figuring out who he is, and a heart-to-heart with dear old dad could help Jack clear up a few things.

But while Jack has been curious about Lucifer, the Devil himself hasn't put much thought into learning more about Jack... until now. "The desire to see his son is something he's pushed off for a while. I think it kinda scared him, honestly," executive producer Andrew Dabb explains. "So when they finally come together, it means something to him."

As emotional as their first meeting might be, Jack will also be faced with the reality that he may have more in common with his father than he thought — something that will prove difficult to accept. "From Jack's point-of-view, he's heard so much about his father. He's never actually seen him. And in Lucifer, he may see parts of himself that he does not necessarily like," adds Dabb.

Any scoop on Supernatural? –Susan
Just because Dean and Sam are trying to get Mary home doesn’t mean she’ll want to go back. “She actually enjoys the fight” in apocalypse world, executive producer Robert Singer says. “That’s something that when she was in our world, when she went off with the British Men of Letters, kind of upset the guys. She, in an odd way, has found a home there where she can be a pure fighter. She doesn’t think that the boys are coming. How would they get there? So she’s pretty entrenched in that world. When they do show up, it causes a little bit of tension between her and the boys.”

Spoilers from TVLine

SUPERNATURAL

Despite his reluctance, Gabriel eventually joins the fight to save Mary and Jack, executive producer Robert Singer says. But when Dean and Sam reunite with their mom, they find that “she, in an odd way, has found a home [in apocalypse world] where she can be a pure fighter. It causes a little bit of tension between her and the boys.” Speaking of family reunions, Lucifer will at last come face-to-face with his son. “He’s very tricky [in] the way he finally has this meeting with Jack, who is a little confused about it,” Singer describes. “It causes a certain amount of consternation for both of them.”

Plus, for the first time, star Jensen Ackles will play a character who is not Dean Winchester. The mystery persona is someone viewers have seen before, “many years ago,” Singer hints, while EP Andrew Dabb predicts that fans will be both “happy and terrified” after the reveal. As for the more soldier-like Cas, “things are going to get bad enough at the end of the season that Sam and Dean are going to want that warrior mentality on their side,” his portrayer Misha Collins shares.

Some Mary spoilers from EW!

Supernatural: Samantha Smith promises 'multiple shocks per episode' as season comes to an end

http://cdn-static.denofgeek.com/sites/denofgeek/files/styles/main_wide/public/supernatural-season-13-episode-20.jpg

Mary Winchester has been in and out of Supernatural’s 13th season, mostly because she’s been living in an alternate world for the past nine months. After the season 12 finale saw Lucifer drag her into the Apocalypse World, she’s been fighting to survive against Michael and his angelic soldiers. But now that Mary’s boys have all the ingredients necessary to open the rift, a season apart could finally be coming to an end.

With only three episodes left, EW hopped on the phone with Samantha Smith, who plays Mary, to talk about Mary’s journey and how no one will be able to anticipate what comes next.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How do you feel Mary’s time in Apocalypse World has affected or changed her?

SAMANTHA SMITH: Starting in season 12, Mary went through about 15 varieties of how she was approaching the world, and every time I, as the person playing her, felt like, “Okay I get it now,” it would evolve. I felt like Mary had finally gotten a grip on things: She had found her place, she had found her equilibrium in her relationship with her kids — we were going to start over with forgiveness for misunderstandings — and then she fell into the alternate universe with Lucifer, and everything had to start over. The survivor in her took over, and I think by the time we found her last episode, she had evolved into General Mary. She was all business, and yet she even said that Jack has become like family. We likened it to he’s the king and she’s the general: He can do whatever he wants, but she tries to advise him. And yet I think she has developed feelings for him as another son. It’s her only attachment in that world, and so for me it became very clear that Mary has to be singular of purpose, and that is surviving and helping the people she has grown to care about to survive, which was a broader version of hunting to save people in our world.

What’s going on with Mary in these final episodes?

Over the next hour and the final two weeks afterward, the boys are trying to find Mary and Jack in this vast world. It’s like trying to find someone in our world — it would take a minute, and they don’t have the benefit of vehicles or the internet or angel radio or any of the stuff they would ordinarily use. At the same time, I think Mary has given up on trying to get back to our world for the time being, and her purpose has become defeating Michael and saving the people there. There are many ways this could go because the danger in Apocalypse World is immediate and fatal. Michael is no slouch, and he doesn’t play.

Does Mary at all feel a sense of wanting revenge on Michael for what he did to her?

That isn’t something that I have registered. I think she would very much like to see him go, but I don’t think that that is her driving force. She would like to see him die on general principle, but I don’t think she’s taking it personally. It’s like being mad at the devil. He’s the devil. He just is, and it’s not personal. I’m sure she’s not fond of him, but her primary goal is to keep everyone else alive and away from the angels.

If she’s in General Mary mode at the moment, how will having her boys in that world affect her?

She doesn’t want her boys in this world — not because she doesn’t want to see them, but because it’s not safe. I think she has reconciled the fact that she will probably never see them again and Jack is now filling that place in her life. It’s fair to say that the boys, their priority is to get us and leave, and it’s possible that having grown so attached to people and felt so responsible for Bobby and all the remaining humans that she’s going to have to make a choice: Does she want to just escape, given the opportunity, or does she feel a responsibility to finish what she started in the Apocalypse World? There is a possibility that there will be a conflict there for her.

How do you feel like the final episodes of this season compare to other Supernatural finales?

I think that this is going to be one of the more interesting endings of a season. In previous seasons we’ve seen it coming to its culmination, and even though you could never guess what exactly is going to happen — no one saw Lucifer and Mary being trapped in Apocalypse World, or Castiel dying — but we sort of knew that Jack was going to be born and that he was going to be an issue, and we saw the direction it was going. I don’t think anyone is going to see any of what’s coming in the next three episodes. There are so many surprises and it’s so packed with characters. There’s going to be multiple shocks per episode for everybody.

As Supernatural season 13 reaches boiling point, all our major players come back together in the Apocalypse World. Mary Winchester herself, Samantha Smith, shares some thoughts about the Winchester family reunion.

https://static2.hypable.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/SN1320a_0086b-1.jpg

According to one star, things are going to get even bigger as we head towards the finale. We spoke with Samantha Smith, who’s portrayed Mary Winchester since the show’s pilot, about life in the Apocalypse World, what we can expect to worry about as Sam and Dean make their way across a war zone to find her, and how her character is in no hurry to get back to Heaven – or Earth itself.

We saw a lot of Mary last week and she’ll be featured for the rest of the season as everyone comes together in Apocalypse World. We’ve come back to this pretty intense story of Mary and Jack becoming crucial parts of the human rebellion. After a few breaks from what’s been going on in the other world, all the focus is converging there – either on what’s happening to Mary and Jack there or on the boys trying to get over there to save them, there’s been a few hints from the EPs that when Mary reunites with the boys, which is happening fairly soon — they’ll discover that she perhaps doesn’t really want to be saved. Is that something that is a part of the upcoming story?

For sure, Mary will be reunited with the boys before the end of the season. But what we have to consider is that when Mary is found, she has, I think, given up hope of getting back to the regular world, certainly any time in the near future. And she has become invested in the plight of the people in the new world, and to just abandon them would cause a lot of conflict for her. So, it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t want to be with her sons, but in true hunter fashion, when there are people that need you, it’s very challenging to walk away.

It makes sense — once you know about a problem existing, to say “Well, that’s not my problem” is a pretty difficult thing to do.

Especially if you’ve already been involved in the solution. You’re not just looking at something [from the outside] – Mary is a General in the army, she is part and parcel of the success they’ve been having, of course because of Jack, but also from her experience teaming up with Bobby, and to just abandon everyone would be very hard for her. So, you know — she will have to choose.

Mary has obviously had this arc involving a lot of guilt because of, I suppose, the ruining of the innocence of her sons. She comes back to her life, after being dead…

Right, as one does.

As one does. And her sons are really everything that she didn’t want — not as men, they’re wonderful men — but in terms of saving them from the harshness of her life. And now we have her in the Apocalypse World with Jack, who is a completely pure childlike being who has become a killer and a soldier, and is using his power as a weapon — such a shift from what we saw earlier, when the campt is caught out because he was trying to entertain the little kids. He has had a serious loss of innocence, one that he probably doesn’t perceive very well. What’s that like for Mary to experience with another child?

Well, I don’t think she ever got to experience that with her children. When she came in it was already done. Her disappointment was new, but the boys hd reconciled themselves and loved their life. As far as Jack is concerned, I think the fact that he is a Nephilim, the fact that he already lives in this place of power… it’s slightly different. I think what’s hard for Mary is that she sees the realizations coming and can’t save him from them, and that’s one of those parenting moments that she never got to have with her kids. You can’t protect your kids from life and learning the dark side and experiencing things you wish you could save them from. And on the other hand, she also needs Jack to be who he is. It doesn’t make her any less sad that he is experiencing all of these milestones of loss and regret and reality. But I think the difference is she is not really trying to protect him from them, she’s just trying to hold his hand through it.

We had that moment earlier in the season when Bobby kind of gives her that moment of absolution, where she realizes that despite all her guilt, despite the choice she made, that in general, the world has been better for her decisions.

Right.

And that could extend onto this journey with Jack — experiencing that process as parents do — rather than walking back in and going “Oh my God, my children are cursed!”– experiencing that process of not being able to protect the children.

If anything, it gave her confidence in her choices, and knowing that they are doing the right thing.

And maybe it could alleviate that emotional burden in her relationship with Sam and Dean. But in this world, Jack and Mary have been imprisoned and tortured by Michael… We’re learning more as they become involved with the humans of this world and a little bit more was revealed last week about the circumstances and what they’ve been up to. There’s only a few thousand people around — there’s really, really minimal surviving camps.

It’s been decimated, yeah.

And what the threat seems to be is that Michael still wants to come to this world and do the same. Is there anything you can tease for what the end-of-season conflict might hinge upon?

I think that the most serious problem over the next three episodes is making sure that Michael a) doesn’t kill all of us, and b) doesn’t get to Earth, to our Earth, and both of those things are near-impossible goals. We’re not sure how he would get into our universe but he’s gone to the south-east where apparently the veil between the world is thin, and he’s a very powerful archangel, so he might have a way. But our issue is we’re just a ragtag bunch of ragtag, injured, dirty survivors, and to take on an archangel and his whole army as a whole… We could pick them off little bits at a time — not all the time — yeah, if he got to our planet he would kill everybody. It’s typical for us that we are in a lose-lose, no-hope kind of situation and we’re
going to have to figure it out.

Presuming that time moves in the same way as it does in the boys’ universe – no weird Narnia time jumps when crossing over – the Mary has been living in this place for many, many months.

Yup. I like to say she’s been in the same outfit for nine months.

I’m sure that’s pleasant. It’s going to be an exciting finale. I’m not sure I can begin to predict what will happen with the boys, with Sam and Dean, and what their next evolution might be…

We never can.

But what can we expect from that reunion between Mary and Jack and the boys, aside from what you mentioned about her reluctance to walk away from duty?

As happy as Mary is going to be to see her boys, there is a large part of her that doesn’t want them there. It’s a dangerous world and as long as Michael is still in the alternate universe they’re safe from him. So there’s some chagrin there that they have obviously sacrificed so much to come find her and Jack, but that reunion and everything that follows is… You know, I say every year they bring a finale that we could never see coming, but last year we knew Jack was going to be born. We didn’t know what exact form that would take, or if he would be good or evil, but we knew how it would culminate.

I can pretty much say that this year no one will see any of it coming. The characters and the event and the twists — every episode is so packed with characters and stunts and adventures. Shooting it we were like, out of breath, all of us. And the interpersonal relationships in between the characters, kind of like in real life, when so much is going on you don’t have time to deal with something, you look at someone and say, “We’re just going to shelf this, just for a minute, until we have a moment to actually talk about it.” And I think a lot of that is what’s happening. There’s so much going on, like, “I’m so happy to see you. This is
on fire! We need to go deal with it.” And I think that is a lot of what’s happening.

Your character brought up something in last week’s episode that was very interesting to me, which is for the first time — we have an idea of heaven in Supernatural, and obviously some part of it is corrupted like the angel power struggle — but it’s never been particularly criticized before is what it offers human souls, you know, ‘Oh, we’ll see each other in heaven’. We knew the deal, but it’s never been described by someone long-dead, and Mary says — after experiencing it — that it’s just a projection, you’re not actually reunited with anyone, it’s all just imagination of memories to dwell in. It’s a really interesting concept for a portrayal heaven in general, and we are now seeing the problems the angels are currently having struggling to keep it heaven active and not spill out billions of ghosts on earth. Maybe there is a potential to find a different way for the souls to move on after death, if heaven is not genuinely a positive experience.

They’ve shown before that heaven is basically a bunch of cells — I mean they look like hotel rooms, but everyone’s locked in their own room. So, you’re very isolated, even if you’re imagining. There was an episode where we went to heaven, and Dean’s heaven was his childhood at home with his brother and Mary was there making him sandwiches, so that is a deeper discussion of do you care if it’s real, or if you think it’s real? What is the difference? And if you’re happy, do you care either way? For Mary to say to Kevin “it’s not real, it’s just memories,” he said “I don’t care,” like, “if I think it’s real, that’s good enough for me, because this is torture.” But knowing that, Mary’s not in any rush to get back there. She’s like, ‘I don’t really get to hang out with John and my kids, so what’s the point?’

That’s a very interesting twist on it. I spoke with Richard Speight for last week’s episode and he said that these final episodes have a really deep bench of actors. That yes, a lot of Supernatural finales have been big — but this one is really big in terms of cast members — which you mentioned. Obviously you worked with Osric in the last episode, who you’ve known for many years but not worked with. Is there anyone — you don’t have to tell me who — but is there anyone that you have a scene with that you never have before, that is a really exciting new dynamic?

I’m in scenes with, but I don’t necessarily speak to – there are, for sure. I’m going to be able to send out a video i took, in a couple of weeks, of the room with all the cast chairs in it. It’s unbelievable, just the group of people that was there, and it was so fun to be a part of. More than just being able to work with amazing people that I haven’t been able to work with before, working with everybody at one time was fantastic. The fans are going to really love it. I can’t wait to see it. I know what happens and I’m still excited to see it. You’ll know when you see it, that this who I’m talking about in terms of who I haven’t been able to work with before.

Looking back at Mary’s arc in Season 12, her reintroduction was a huge validation for the character, an undoing the trauma that set off the show — not only onscreen for Sam and Dean, but offscreen undoing the fridging of a woman who’s story was to be killed and drive these men’s stories. Last season had a whole thread of mothers; Mary and her place in the world, and then Kelly. There was a thread of motherhood, and what it meant and could mean. And this season where the boys have been looking after Jack, and Cas has been looking after Jack, and there have been issues with Lucifer wanting Jack to raise as his own — a theme of fatherhood is sort of running through this season. After this time alive in the world for Mary, how does she feel, at the moment, about John? Obviously there is a lot of angst from the boys about what he became — if he was abusive, Toni Bevell saying it was child abuse, which in some flashbacks seen is possibly true — so she comes in initially with this memory of him as a great father, and we never really address how she feels about the truth of what happened after she learns it. Is that something that she ever thinks about, how she feels about John, or what she might say to him if she saw him now?

Well I’ve given a lot of thought to it, and I used to say she would be really angry with him for doing that. But here’s the thing: I realized she never told him that she was a hunter. He found this out after she died. So, she never said to him “Don’t raise my boys as hunters.” He didn’t know, so she couldn’t be angry with him for doing it. She could be disappointed and heartbroken, but not angry. And there is some element of somebody devoting your life to avenging your death that is very romantic. It’s not because he hated her, it’s because he loved her. So, he did the best he could. I think she would be upset that he basically shoved the boys to the side in lieu of his mission, but they obviously turned out amazing, and while her heart would break for the despair they experienced as children, it would all be forgiven because it wasn’t meant to be. He did the best, I think, that he could with the resources at his disposal. I hope for a reunion with Mary and John at some point, because I think it would just be so interesting. So much going on. It would be a heart moment, but also be super loaded with history and lapses in time. We’ll see. I’m hoping.

From The Mary Sue Interview: Supernatural’s Samantha Smith Previews “General Mary Winchester”

We might need something cozy to curl up in after the finale, but like Mary, we’ll need to be brave. While Mary wasn’t so happy with her resurrection in season twelve, Smith believes she overcame that and wants to live and fight on now. Mary is “committed to doing whatever it takes to survive and continue to do good,” says Smith. “While she knows what heaven is, she’s not in any rush to go back.” And, while she might not be in a rush to get back to our world either, sacrifice is what the family does for the greater good. Says Smith: “That’s sort of the Winchester, hunter motto: to you own detriment you will help those that need it.”

I have to say, Jody was strangely dressed (and remarkably clean) for the AU. (Or maybe she was just visiting from the #WaywardSisters pilot shoot...) @kimrhodes4real #Supernatural #LadiesTakinOverTheLair

Can we talk about how, "Winchester" this picture is. You've got Dean, Sam, Bobby, and Castiel in the foreground. And a, presumably dead, person on a spike in the background.
