The Winchesters Case Files
“No doubt… Endings are hard, but then again… nothing ever really ends, does it?...” ― Chuck Shurley
Those were the words that started my last Fan Video of the Week article about Supernatural. Little did I know that Supernatural’s journey would continue a few years later. Thinking about that time still fills me with sadness but also I remember how relieved I was. I needed a break. It was not because of Supernatural per se but the fandom. There was a very good side to it but also the not so good side, which took a hold on me and pulled me down. Mostly it was the constant arguing online. Everyone needs a break from time to time right?
As time went by though I noticed that I was missing a lifeline in my week, something that I could wait for to survive that week. Anything that can make you feel good is only a good thing, right? Let’s just say that these four years have not been easy on my front, and this year in the spring I found out that I was badly ill, which added to everything I tried to fight against. I needed Supernatural in my life and that made me wait for something else. I started to watch Walker every week, but it wasn’t the same. I was not sure what I was expecting from The Winchesters, or did I even anticipate it? And I chose to stay off social media for this series, too.

We wanted to try it out with my husband even though the trailers did not catch me that well. We decided to start to watch it on Fridays like we did with Supernatural. We sat down, turned on the television and clicked play. Already the introduction hit me and, of course, Jensen’s voice. The Indiana Jones start grabbed us both with the story, wondering “What it is all about?” The series was heading forward with a good start. At the beginning of Supernatural, I actually liked the toned down coloring and the darkness. Even though it is probably because of the time the series is based on, I still really like the color tone of The Winchesters.
About the characters: I like most of them. Mary’s actress will still need to polish how she acts Mary and tone some things down. John is very likable and I actually like everyone in the group and the side characters we have seen. I am glad they continue the hunting with the books and I especially like that they brought Men of Letters back into the forefront. That was the small gripe I had with Supernatural. I wanted more stories about the Men of Letters and their lore. The effects in the series seem to be better too and I really like every small and big prop they have. And yes, I do drool also about the cars. (Admin note: me too!)

We have seen all three episodes at this time and have liked them all. I think with Dean there seems to be a bigger mystery around all this, but we shall see how the story unfolds. We will continue to watch it as our Friday treat.

Trivia and Minutiae
The opening scene in the cemetery is an homage to the opening sequence in the Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. Samuel’s hat is also a nod to Indy’s hat.
The film playing in the theater Mary was leaving was Slaughterhouse-Five, which was released on March 15, 1972.
Movie posters that can be seen outside the theater include Klute (1971), Deliverance (1972) and THX 1138 (1971). Showrunner Robbie Thompson’s Twitter handle is @rthompson1138 in tribute to the George Lucas movie.
Carlos: Jimi, Janis, Jim Morrison. Amen. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison are musicians and members of the 27 Club, an informal list of musicians and artists that have died at the age of 27.
