Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections 15.20 “Carry On” series finale special

This is it. I have done my articles of the fan videos for five years now so it is only fitting I will end them on the finale. It has been a long, bumpy road to get here with joy and laughter but also sadness. I have written many other articles, too, with different ideas I have had, but the fan videos have been the closest to my heart. I wanted to make this last one a special one, with many fan videos that people have made from the finale.

Thank you to all the creators that have made the beautiful videos. Without them, these articles would not have been possible. I hope you continue to apply that talent to next show you are interested in, and give that gift forward. As for me… I do not know what my future holds at the moment. Maybe I will get some other show to write articles about, but some inspirational vacation could also be a good choice.

“Carry On Wayward Son” is a progressive rock single recorded by Kansas and written by Kerry Livgren for their 1976 album Leftoverture. In 1977, the song peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their first Top 40 hit.

The 7″ single has been certified Gold by the RIAA. This version was a much shorter version of the song, edited down to 3:26, a version that was also the band’s only single to chart in the UK, reaching number 51 there. All initial releases of the single had a B-side of “Questions of My Childhood”. The song was later re-released on the Kansas compilation albums The Best of Kansas, On the Other Side, The Kansas Boxed Set, The Ultimate Kansas, and Sail On: The 30th Anniversary Collection.

It was also included on the live Kansas albums Two for the Show, Live at the Whisky, King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Kansas, Dust in the Wind, Device, Voice, Drum, and There’s Know Place Like Home, along with the DVD companions to Device, Voice, Drum and There’s Know Place Like Home. The song is played on every season finale of The CW’s Supernatural. This song is 96th on VH1’s 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs.”

Trivia and Minutiae

Carry On Wayward Son single by Kansas was released on November 19, 1976 and coincidentally Supernatural series finale aired November 19, 2020. I guess it was destiny?

The title “Carry On” is a reference to the refrain from the show’s unofficial theme, “Carry On Wayward Son”. Andrew Dabb revealed that the idea to use “Carry On” as the finale title came from post-production coordinator Casey Hammons.

Supernatural’s final episode was number 327. Coincidentally, the standard engine in a 1967 Chevy Impala is a 327 cubic-inch V8.

Sam and Dean use the aliases “Agents Singer and Kripke” for Robert Singer and Eric Kripke.

Though Sam’s son has an anti-possession tattoo on his arm, there are no other signs of hunting in Sam’s life after he leaves the Bunker. Jared confirmed at the November StageIt panel that Sam has not been hunting “in honor of Dean” because Dean wouldn’t have wanted him to, but that Sam did tell his son about hunting and about his Uncle Dean, and that the decision to get the tattoo was Dean II’s.

Unlike the prior 13 seasons, the final episode of the season did not open with “Carry On Wayward Son” playing over the “Road So Far” montage. Instead the song played towards the end of the episode, over a montage of Dean driving around Heaven waiting for Sam and Sam living his life to old age. Unlike previous times, the music is diegetic and playing from the Impala’s radio as shown with Dean commenting on how much he loves the song.
