Thanksgiving Fan Vid: Supernatural’s “Last Holiday”
How nice was it to come back after a LONG Hellatus and watch “Last Holiday”, the episode of warmth and pending goodbyes? And what an hour it was! It was lovely to see Sam, Dean and Jack celebrate the holidays and have fun. I think that was the best thing. Mrs. Butters, in the end, was not that bad either. She just wanted to protect her family (but in the wrong way). That was truly the last holiday we’d spend with Supernatural, so I found the above quote to be quite accurate. Now that the end has arrived, we can be grateful for Supernatural as we celebrate Thanksgiving!
Because of the pandemic, Supernatural, like everything else, unexpectedly went on hold this year. That meant that Jared and Jensen had to wait longer than expected for the end of the show to air. They, and Misha, dreaded the day the show would end, but it did eventually come to the end of its road. They were emotional about the goodbyes and scared of an unknown future, but now that the end has come, they are able to continue living their lives. Celebrating the holidays must be nice now that they no longer have to live in constant anticipation of sadness. It may truly be a “Happy Thanksgiving” for them!
Since we had almost all the regular holidays in “Last Holiday”, I found this small ghost story to share as a late Halloween treat as well. I think the story fits for Sam and Dean, as I remember Chuck’s episode with the watch and their lives…plus knowing they were also finally free at the end of their story. Then for Jared, Jensen and Misha, are they asking, “What now?”
Did you know that Jensen and Jared carved some of the pumpkins themselves? Nice little behind-the-scenes info.
Timekeeper by gridster2 from Scoopwhoop
He had been given the watch on his tenth birthday. It was an ordinary grey plastic wristwatch in every respect except for the fact that it was counting down. “That is all of the time you have left in the world, son. Use it wisely.” And indeed, he did. As the watch ticked away, the boy, now a man, lived life to the fullest. He climbed mountains and swam oceans. He talked and laughed and lived and loved. The man was never afraid, for he knew exactly how much time he had left. Eventually, the watch began its final countdown. The old man stood looking over everything he had done, everything he had built. 5. He shook hands with his old business partner, the man who had long been his friend and confidant. 4. His dog came and licked his hand, earning a pat on the head for its companionship. 3. He hugged his son, knowing that he had been a good father. 2. He kissed his wife on the forehead one last time. 1. The old man smiled and closed his eyes.
Then, nothing happened. The watch beeped once and turned off. The man stood standing there, very much alive. You would think that in that moment he would have been overjoyed. Instead, for the first time in his life, the man was scared.
What’s next in their lives? In our lives?

Smile by Mikky Ekko
Smile, the worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven, so smile
We’re trying so hard to get it all right
But only feel lonely at the end of the night
And I wanna be somewhere away from this place
Yeah, somewhere just a little closer to grace
I’ll smile, the worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven, so smile
Smile
Well, call me loser, call me thief
Tell me I’m special when you spit at me
‘Cause I don’t wanna be lonely, I wanna be loved
And I want you to hold me like I’m the only one
I’ll smile, the worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven, so smile
Smile
And time will eventually knock on my door
And tell me I’m not needed around anymore
But he’ll hold me so close at the end of the day
When I’m quiet I can nearly hear him say
Smile, the worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to turn, and we’ve got nothing but time
But the future is forever, the future is forever, so smile, so smile, so smile
Smile, the worst is yet to come
We’ll be lucky if we ever see the sun

Quotes in “Last Holiday”
Dean: He’ll be fine. I mean, I’ve been through worse. Look at me. I’m the picture of health.
Sam: Ignoring your trauma doesn’t make you healthy.
Dean: Sure it does.
Sam: Why didn’t you call me?
Dean: Well. I mean, I, you know, figured you were… “practicing your sign language.”
Sam: And that’s more important than coming to save you? Dean?
Dean: It’s been a while for you, man, you know?
Mrs. Butters: It — Oh. Dean. Eat your vegetables. And, Sam… cut your hair. And, Jack… go save the world. Well. Goodbye, boys.
Trivia and Minutiae from “Last Holiday”
Dean: Oh, yeah — “uh, hey, Mario Brothers? Yeah, could you come the most secretive, secure supernatural hideout in the world? Great. Thanks. Go, Luigi!”
The Mario Brothers – Mario and Luigi – are two Italian-American bothers who are plumbers and the stars of the video game franchise named after them.
One of the sigils that Mrs. Butters absorbs herself into when she puts the Bunker in standby mode is that of a Twanas symbol, which is best known as the stick man charm from The Blair Witch Project, which was co-directed by “Last Holiday” director, Eduardo Sanchez.
The vampires are watching an episode of the Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows before Sam and Dean burst through the door.
Dean: Now, I was angry with you… for a while. And maybe I still am a little bit, okay? But I’m not gonna let some Evil Mary Poppins take you out. Do you understand?
Mary Poppins is the protagonist of P.L. Travers’ book series of the same name about a magical British nanny.
Dean: Dude, we fought the Devil, okay? I’ve killed Hitler. I think we can handle a few old pipes.
Dean is referencing when he shot the newly-resurrected Adolf Hitler in the head in 12.05 The One You’ve Been Waiting For.
We finally learn that the telescope in the Bunker is actually an “interdimensional geoscope.” When Dean says he did not see anything when he looked into it earlier, Mrs. Butters tells them that that is “not good.” As we saw in 15.12 Galaxy Brain, Chuck has been destroying the other universes, which explains why Dean did not see anything through the scope.
In 12.18 The Memory Remains, Ketch looked through the geoscope and remarked that he couldn’t see a “damn thing.” Though, as we learned in this episode, the Bunker was only running on half-power, which would explain why he did not see anything when he looked through it. The geoscope is only shown to be powered up when the Bunker is at full power.
