Supernatural 15.06 “Golden Time”– Return and Redemption
Quick note: I don’t write the name of G-d, because I’m Jewish, so that’s why I use the “-“. 🙂 As you were.
I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS. This episode caught me right in my feels and I loved every second of it.
Before we get into the meat of the episode with the boys, I need to express some feelings about Cas. I’ve never had a strong opinion about Cas. I find him interesting as a character, but other than that, I’m kind of neutral about him. I felt this episode was a beautiful tribute to how far Cas has come as a “person” and I think he made some great strides in his development. The thing that was most interesting to me was the idea that he was on a similar journey to the Winchesters. Often we’ve seen Sam or Dean leave hunting and then something makes them return to it. We see this pattern repeat with Cas because he was doing his thing, fishing, when something came along to force him back in the game. Like it or not, Cas is a hunter and a Winchester, by default. Hunting is what he does.
Now, onto the Winchesters. Dean first. It’s been fascinating this season so far, watching Dean struggle with the idea of Free Will and what it means that Chuck is now involved in their lives in such a real way. I said it at the end of Season 14, that Chuck’s reveal would call into question every choice that the Winchesters have ever made, and we see Dean really struggling with that idea and what it means for him. We also see Dean stepping up to the plate when his brother needs him, which isn’t unusual. I think Dean is the type to need a clear and concise mission to work toward. “Killing G-d” is neither of those things. He is in a tailspin because of his pain and Sam swoops in and tries to support his brother.
Now Sam. There are SO MANY feelings. First of all, thank you, writers, for giving us Sam jogging. I could watch Jared run for the rest of my life and be happy. He was stunning. Second of all, I am so happy that he got Eileen back. I loved her when she was around and I think her death marked another bad decision by the writers, similar to Charlie. To see her come back and be able to drive this story the way she did almost made up for her untimely death. Seeing her and Sam interact was so sweet and it just made me want them to be together forever. Sam’s devotion to helping her made me so happy because I think when Sam is working toward something, for someone, that’s when he’s at his best. He was so amazing this episode because he knew the stakes. He knew that he wouldn’t have another chance to make this happen. He knew there was no other option for him. So he did what he had to do and saved the day.
Witch!Sam fans, rise! I love the idea of Sam being Rowena’s protege. I think it really suits Sam’s personality, with his wonderful empathy, but also his brains and his beautiful ability with spell work. His prowess this episode was not only shown with his command of sign language, but with his brilliant ability to make one of Rowena’s hex bags to take care of the witch. Sam has always been smart, but I think as the show has progressed, the writers, and by default, Sam, have gotten more comfortable with showing off his smarts. This episode was a loving tribute to Sam’s abilities outside of traditional hunting and more into the grey area of using his brains to help him out of a sticky situation. Love love love Sam always but loved him more this episode.
Before I wrap this up, I need to express how flipping excited I am for Episode 7. I am a long time fan of Christian Kane and I love his and Jensen’s friendship. I’m really excited to see how that will play out on screen, and how Christian will inhabit a new type of role. Yay for friends being able to show up!
So, I think that’s all. To all of the American readers, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. To everyone, I hope you all have a great week. As always, feel free to comment below.
