Supernatural’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan Becomes Negan
Speculation on What Negan’s Arrival Will Mean for The Walking Dead Universe
By Metamorphic Rocks
Rick and his people have faced many villains over the years, from the Governor to the cannibals at Terminus. But clearly, Negan is in a completely different league. The fall-out from his murderous actions will undoubtedly hit every character in different, but very profound ways. The level of devastation and despair these people will experience from losing another one (or more) of their own in such a horrific way is going to be hard to watch. Hopefully, though, the losses will lead to compelling character journeys. The group will now have to survive their post-apocalyptic world with Negan calling the shots. This is likely to make them question everything they’ve been fighting for up to this point. Is it all still worth it? Can they fight for survival even in the absence of freedom? Is there still hope in the face of such darkness? Watching these characters struggle with what it means to be human in this new world has always been at the center of The Walking Dead, and the addition of Negan can provide more interesting opportunities for our survivors to grapple with these questions. Of course, there-in lies the slippery slope the show has always tried to navigate – how much of an imbalance between despair and hope can viewers take?
Negan’s introduction also seems to be expanding The Walking Dead universe. In previous seasons, storylines revolved around our core group of survivors, but this season we’ll see The Safe Zone Residents (who we got to know last year), The Saviors, The Hilltop Colony, and The Kingdom. With these different groups come many new characters. It seems things won’t just be about Rick and his people anymore. It’s always a little tricky to introduce new characters to an established series, but this show has become masterful at it, especially since it kills off so many regulars every season. Let’s just hope we get some new multilayered characters to become invested in, who also come with unique (and not rehashed) storylines.
It’s uncertain exactly how Negan’s tyrannical rule will play out, or how long it will last. One thing is for sure, however – his arrival is a game changer. Not only will our characters’ lives be forever changed, but the series itself will also undergo a sort of metamorphosis. Here’s hoping that all of it – however it goes down – will be compelling to watch.
