Fan Video of the Week: Supernatural Reflections “Safe House”

What are memories? You could call them thoughts, impressions or events you remember. It is recalling your past and remembrance of your youth. It is the ideas you have had and the emotion you connect to certain times. It is things that happened before the present times. A character, conduct as preserved in remembrance, history or tradition. Most of all it is feelings and connected images that make you cry, laugh, smile or be angry.

Safe House was a trip on the memory lane so it is only fitting the fan video of the week is the same. I must warn you. While watching the videos keep your tissues ready. They are very well made but very tough to watch emotionally. I really do miss Bobby and Rufus. And even though these videos focus on Bobby the spirit of Rufus is present like he was on the episode where the clips on both videos have mostly been taken. Also check out the minutiae. It is a real treat this week like the quotes. Everything was great in this episode.

For me, the character was avuncular, paternal and crusty and at that point of the show I was sort of this young lieutenant in homicide, vomiting in the corner. The two people that were like father-figures and showing me the ropes were Bob (Singer) and Kim (Manners). Actually the character’s name originally was ‘Bobby Manners’. But when the name went through legal clearance they said that there was a real ‘Bobby Manners’ that lived in South Dakota. And if legal finds things like that, you have to change the name. So I made it ‘Singer.’ And Bob, to his eternal chagrin, wasn’t in that day. And when he came back he was all ‘what the hell is this?!’ At that point it was a done deal. Bobby Singer was a hunter, close friend and father figure to Sam and Dean Winchester. Bobby grew up with an abusive father, who Bobby shot and killed when he was a teenager while protecting his mother. Bobby buried his father in the salvage yard.

A mechanic by trade, Bobby became a hunter after he had to kill his wife Karen Singer when she was possessed by a demon. Rufus Turner is the hunter who exorcised the demon and helped cover up Karen’s death. It was Rufus who introduced Bobby to the world of the supernatural, and they hunted together for many years until a hunt went wrong in Omaha around 1993. They become estranged after this although they had contact and some reconciliation from 2008 until Rufus’ death in 2011.

Rufus Turner is the hunter who helped Bobby Singer when his wife, Karen Singer, was possessed by a demon. Rufus exorcised the demon and helped cover up Karen’s death. It’s Rufus who introduces Bobby to the world of the supernatural, and they hunted together for many years until a hunt goes wrong in Omaha, and a woman important to Rufus dies. They become estranged after the incident. Fifteen years later, Rufus responds to Bobby’s request for information on Bela and helps Dean locate her. He returns to active hunting after Lucifer rises and the Apocalypse begins, and he helps Bobby get his soul back. Rufus dies when Bobby, possessed by the Khan worm, stabs him. Bobby and the Winchesters bury him in a Jewish cemetery.

Minutiae:

During the flashback scenes, both Bobby’s Car and Bobby’s flask can be seen.

At the end of the flashback in this episode, Bobby gets a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue from Rufus to satisfy their earlier bet, since Bobby was right: they weren’t dealing with a baku. This bottle is found two years later by Sam and Jody Mills in 7.12 Time After Time. They wonder what bet Rufus and Bobby had made, but never find out.

Executive Consultant Robert Singer can be heard as the radio host introducing “Midnight Rider” as Sam and Dean drive off at the end of the episode.
