Thank you for posting I can’t always find these interviews and articles and they are a Great read. Interesting how in Jensen’s interview how he mentions that Dean still has some residual “twisted soul” in him
Jared is as committed to the show as Jensen but maybe 95% to Jensen’s 100% I think with Jarred’s depression problems he would like to be home more, Jensen as well but I think his more balanced emotionally than Jared Interesting and Thanks
Sorry, but “Wayward Daughters” is not spin-off material. No offense to the 4 actresses involved or to the female fans that would like to see something like this, but there is just not enough of a plotline to bring the show into production. Further, NONE of the 4 female characters that would make-up the “Wayward Daughters” cast really created too big of a splash with the fans.
Consider, by contrast, The Originals, which is a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries. At the time it launched, VD was at its peak popularity, and the character of Klause was wildly popular with that show’s fans. Giving him and his also popular (albeit less so) siblings a spinoff seemed like the natural thing to do. The result is a very well written show that is superior to its mother show, but it is not the “hit” the CW was banking on. In fact, the ratings were somewhat lackluster, given all the anticipation for the project.
Supernatural’s ratings are now meandering in the .7 to .8 area, and Jodi & Dona are nowhere near as popular as Klause was. Further, Alex is a character most fans seem indifferent towards, and Claire is outright hated by many. Thus, it would not be a wise decision to make this spin off.
I’ll go so far as to say that in terms of female characters, Ellen & Jo Harvelle were much more popular with the fans, yet they never had a spinoff of their own. “The Harvelles” would probably have been considerably more popular than “Wayward Daughters.”
If we are going to do a spinoff of Supernatural, I think something like “The Young Sam & Dean Adventures” (w/ Colin Ford and Dylan Everette) or “Supernatural Frontier” (the Campbell family in the Wild West with Samuel Colt) would work better.
Note: none of these spinoff ideas are my ideas. I spotted them on various fan websites over the years, so I cannot claim credit for them.
By this time, Colin and Dylan are at the age where any spinoff would have to involve Sam taking classes in college and Dean hunting with John, both of which don’t work and are very time limited. Supernatural frontier might work, but cowboy shows and shows set in the past are not particularly popular with audiences. I don’t know if Supernatural can spawn a successful spinoff, but Wayward Daughters is one of the few ideas that fit into the world and have already known characters.
Oh, I don’t know.
20 year olds play teenagers all the time. Ever watch PLL? Glee? Gossip Girl? 90210 (where they had a 30 year old play a high school student)? It’s not so ludicrous for Colin & Dylan to play a young Sam & Dean. At least those two look young. But regardless, you can always find different actors to play the young Sam & Dean if the show gets made.
Supernatural Frontier wouldn’t exactly be a cowboy show, would it? Regardless, it can still do well. Deadwood did well for 3 seasons, but HBO canceled it due to its tremendous expense. It had respectable viewing figures. TV audiences (tired of all the Superhero stuff) may be thirsting for something different, so a cowboy show may catch on if done properly.
Speaking of spinoffs, I do not think any spinoff will work. The draw for Supernatural is the synergistic effect of Sam and Dean by Jared and Jensen. Simply cannot be replicated. I would watch a spinoff about the Men of Letters and the Campbell and Winchester family history but would LOVE to see it explored on SPN with Sam and Dean. I disagree that shows set in the past are not popular; depends on the story and the time period. Wayward Daughters would work for the ABC Family now Free something station…. or maybe Disney on hormones. I do not think the idea of WD fits in the SPN world, rather it was attempted to be jammed down our throats or trying to put the pretty glass slipper on the not so Cinderella step sister.
I disagree. I think Supernatural can spawn a spinoff that does not center on Sam & Dean. However, it has to be the right show.
Bloodlines was a disaster — badly acted, bad concept, etc. There was nothing good about it. Frankly, it’s disappointing that this became the only spinoff idea to get a pilot, when there were so many superior ones that were overlooked.
Wayward Daughters will go down just like bloodlines. You cannot have a show set in the present focusing on 4 female characters, just to focus on 4 female characters. What would they do? Save the world from The Darkness? Save the world from the Leviathans? Seriously? Given what Sam & Dean have done, anything these ladies do would seem anticlimactic. Besides, I’m not so sure the 4 actors have that much chemistry together, or if they can carry a show.
I agree with you spnlit. The chemistry between the J’s is what drives the show. They’ve captured lightening in a bottle. Don’t think a spin-off, no matter how well conceived, will come close to the original. JMO.
Is there a schedule for March posted anywhere? I think the March 30 episode (if there is one) is being pre empted in my area. I can’t seem to find a schedule anywhere.
