SUPERNATURAL “Paint it Black” — (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET)
ROWENA MAKES PLANS TO RECLAIM HER MAGIC —
Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a string of suicides committed by people with little in common other than the identical, grisly method of death – slow, self-administered disembowelment. All of the victims were members of a Catholic church and had recently given confession, leading the brothers to suspect the priest (guest star Stephen Daniel Curtis) is somehow involved. Meanwhile, when Crowley (Mark Sheppard) captures Olivette (guest star Teryl Rothery), the leader of the Grand Coven, Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) pleads her case to be allowed to practice magic freely again. John Showalter directed this episode written by Brad Buckner & Eugenie Ross-Leming (#1016). Original airdate 3/25/2015.
A big Rowena episode and disembowelment, when I said, a while ago, that I wanted some new MOTWs I didn’t picture this. We get another SG-1 alumni in Terry Rothery as a bonus. So what do you think? Are you excited to see something more about The Grand Coven? Why would members of a Catholic Church disembowel themselves? Where do you think this will lead?
What if the little they have in common is MOCDean satisfying an itch? C’mon! A girl can dream can’t she!!!!!
Disembowelment – pretty dark and gruesome for our little show! I don’t remember ever seeing that word used in a synopsis before.
But first we have to get thru the Cole ep to see if he makes it out alive!!! Good times!
The premise of this episode looks pretty interesting…. long term disembowelment? Yikes. Can’t say that I am all that interested in the Rowena stuff and hope that it’s nearly a blip on the radar and the rest of it is Sam/Dean stuff. I wonder how this will be tied in with the MoC? I’d like to see pretty much every episode from now until the end of the season to resonate in some way with the MoC so that it doesn’t stagnate as it has since basically the beginning of the season. I’d like to think that something as big as killing Cain will lead to something… go somewhere. I do wonder about the subject matter; suicide? How close was this to Jared’s friend’s suicide? I wonder if this was hard for him to film?
Oh.. forgot to say…. although the premise seems interesting the writers for the ep do not fill me with confidence.
Disembowelment? Gross… gotta see how they get any of this by the censors. Just noticed the writers – lowering expectations now.
Harakiri is ritual suicide by disembowelment, but that is a Japanese ritual. Believe it or not, there are some pagan solstice/pre-Christianity mythologies surrounding this, involving Krampus and, particularly, his female counterpart Perschta.
I have no idea if they are going to go with a pre-Christian mythology, but that would be interesting. I too am adjusting my expectations down due to the writers.
yep, just speculation; I was raised Catholic and don’t recall any disembowelment rituals in the Catholic faith :):):)
We used have the ritual disembowelling on thursdays at 3pm, after choir practice. It was a wonderful family event (obviously each week the families were smaller but you know tradition is very important and we were happy to be so involved in the church).
Yes, definitely gross! What is it lately with this show and Catholics? We saw a nun choking Dean in the preview. Last season we had nuns possessed by demons. Geez. Nothing that catches my interest so far but it’s early.
Catholicism has readily identifiable appearances, or they used to. Nuns have habits, even though they don’t wear them much any more. Priests have collar, some Protestant churches don’t. If you are a writer, showing a nun in a habit or a priest in a collar or even better the robes of sacrament is a visual clue that religion is going to be part of the story. Plus, with the Catholic church you don’t have to explain or write spouses for the minister and they all live in a Rectory. Basically, it’s a visual shorthand. Plus the Catholic church has all those nice rituals like exorcisms that fit into the world of Supernatural. Using Catholic priests is common in a lot of dramatic narrative. They call the minister Father, ev eryone “knows” or has a cultural idea about the religion and the writers go from there. It’s easy and when you only have 42 minutes, it lets the story move without a lot of explanation of the religious leanings of the PIP or MOTW, whichever the priest is. At least that’s my guess.
I get your point about the stereotype of Catholics but they don’t all live together in rectorys. Only parish priests may live (and they may not) in rectorys that are usually attached to the church, nuns live in separate houses or apartments from the priest if their order is attached to that parish. I won’t even get into the nice rituals. Lol.
I know that priests don’t all live in rectories, again, it’s the stereotype that is being used to fill in a character. People think about the parish priest living in the rectory, so media uses the parish priest living in a rectory, so people see priests as living in rectories. It’s a narrative cycle. Just like nuns on TV and movies still show up in full habit, even though most, if not all nuns don’t wear it any longer.
I don’t know why but it cracks me up that it’s SLOW disembowelment. A regular length disembowelment wouldn’t be interesting enough, I guess. So now I’m wondering about the time frame for a slow one as opposed to a regular one. Like Sam, I must hit the books on this one and see what the lore says.
Then you wonder how do they know it was a slow disembowelment. can you tell if it took 15 minutes vs. an hour? Did someone tape it and leave a timestamp? When you find someone disemboweled are there signs of how long it took? Inquiring minds want to know.
🙂 Heh, what is the baseline time for a self-disembowelment? I suppose if you are disemboweling yourself it would SEEM like an eternity at 3 sec’s. Yikes, not looking forward to that.
Percysowner and Leah, I just laughed really hard at your comments. I’m now fervently hoping that there IS a video with a timestamp which prompts an in-depth discussion between Sam and Dean about the process and the baseline time for a typical self-disembowelment. You two would be great script writers for that scene! I’ve had a crappy day so thanks for a really good laugh.
