Supernatural Season 11!!!!!!!!!!! It’s Happening
Today was the big CW presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour (Television Critics Association) and the CW had a big surprise for everyone…Early Renewals. Oh yes, “Supernatural” season 11 is a go!
The big surprise wasn’t just that “Supernatural” was among the early renewals, but that ALL eight fall scripted shows on The CW were given a new season. “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “The Originals” were pretty much givens, but to see “The 100,” “Reign,” and “Jane The Virgin” among the list too is both surprising and very exciting. “The 100” especially is a welcome surprise to me, because as far as production value and writing goes it’s top notch. It’s good to see The CW reward such quality.
Sure, given the ratings and the massive online buzz, “Supernatural’s” renewal wasn’t all that surprising. “Supernatural” is at a point now where it ends when it wants to end. The decision is out of the network’s hands. Given the renewal though, it sounds like the cast and crew have decided to give another season a go. There’s no official word yet as to who will be returning, aka whether Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard will be joining Jared and Jensen in the new season, or who will be the showrunner, but irregardless of the behind the scenes direction the CW has enough faith that the show can sustain another year. So yay for us!
I can’t help but feel nostaglic anytime one of these announcements happen, because I still rememeber the “Save our Show” campaigns from season three. So, in honor of ten years of “Supernatural” and now more coming, here’s a totally random, off the top of my head season by season picspam!
Season One
Season Two
Season Three
Season Four
Season Five
Season Six
Season Seven
Season Eight
Season Nine
Season Ten
Congratulations “Supernatural” on the eleventh season, hitting a milestone that no other show on The CW, or even on the old WB network, have hit before. Take that “Smallville!”
Moving my happy dance here and your pictures really topped the announcement.
There was “Awwwww” moment and then “sniff”, a lot of “smiles” and “feels”. I hope season 11 brings us that and a lot more. 😀

:):D:):D:):D……I wasn’t worried 😮 need to sit down now.
Great pictures!
YES! Congratulation Supernatural. I am so glad my favorite show will still be a part of my life for another year. I may have a few issues with my show but it still holds a very special place in my heart. I am very happy at this news.:)
I am also pleased to hear my other current favorite show The 100, is renewed as well. It is a show well worth checking out for anyone who hasn’t seen it.
Jensen tweeted:
Early pickup for season 11! Congrats everyone. @jarpad @mishacollins @Mark_Sheppard #SPNFamily let’s keep it going!
The tweet is cute but I wonder what his career ambitions are beyond Supernatural.
From Jared:
Oh, nothin. Just watchin the game with Romo… Celebrating the Season 11 pickup 🙂 pic.twitter.com/lLIHSyncS0
Hi SanSummer1, not sure what you mean by this:
“The tweet is cute but I wonder what his career ambitions are beyond Supernatural.”
I am sure both of them have career ambitions beyond Supernatural.
There’s been talk that Jensen auditioned for roles in movies but scheduling proved to be a problem. Does he want the show to just keep going? Or would he want to have a movie career?
Jensen’s tweet indicates that season 11 will be very much like season 10 i.e. it’s not going to be Winchester-centric, Misha and Mark will be there so Jensen and Jared can have time off.
Both Jared and Jensen have given up several opportunities for films because of the show. I am not sure how easy it will be for either of them to transition to another show or to film after so much time out of LA. At 36/32 they are on the old side for Hollywood and I worry that they are going to be too locked into the roles that have until now defined their careers for casting agents to be able to see them as something else. I think they could transition to another CW show possibly after Supernatural, but moving into the mainstream will be difficult…. not impossible, but difficult.
I do think their age will work against them for other parts, but men have less problems with that than women. As to being stereotyped, being a hit show on a tiny network has its advantages, WE know them as Sam and Dean, but I’m not sure enough people do to interfere with their careers. Jensen may want to direct eventually and he is a very talented actor. Jared had tons of proof he can play different characters just in his Supernatural reel. In any case, they have had a more solid career than many actors and they are probably grateful for that. Frankly, I think they realized that they were limiting future career opportunities around season seven when they resigned.
Many years ago, James Garner was known as Maverick, then years later he became known as Jim Rockford. Some actors can overcome being associated with a certain part.
It appears to me that both Jensen and Jared are smart, and they realize that they are husbands and fathers now. There’s a lot to be said for a steady (good) paycheck and lots of time off. They have both publicly said that they don’t wish for fame, and that they are happy where they are in their lives right now. I am very impressed that they feel that way, and quite honestly, that attracts me to watch Supernatural just as much as the acting and scripts. I love that they want to put their families first, and I imagine that when their kids get a little older and need more “daddy” time, then they will call it quits and move on into the next phase of their lives and careers. But at this point, I don’t think either of them have given any indication that they are interested in being huge stars.
My guess is then they will drag out the current storylines into season 11, so Dean will have the MOC, Cas will have Jimmy’s daughter to take care of and Crowley will have his mother issues. I guess based on Jared’s request for a much lighter work schedule Sam will continue on in the same vein as this season too, he’ll be there because Jared is contracted to appear in every episode but he wont really be part of the narrative. He’s now more of the quiet observer, essentially the audiences avatar? I wonder if Jared wants more time off than he has this season he might negotiate a new contract where by he doesnt have to appear in every episode?

Probably not. $175,000 for about three days of work on set is pretty good.
TV Guide tweeted:
Pedowitz still wants a #Supernatural spin-off. “Hopefully next year they will come up with something that we can use” #TCA15
Congratulations SPNFAMILY!!!!!!! The best news ever to cheer me up for the day:D and thank you Alice!the pics were awesome 😀 now I’m waiting for more news, but at the moment I’m just happy!another year with the Winchester’s world just feels so good!!!!!
Quoting SanSummer1:
“Jensen’s tweet indicates that season 11 will be very much like season 10 i.e. it’s not going to be Winchester-centric, Misha and Mark will be there so Jensen and Jared can have time off. “
LOL, I guess I am not very good at reading between the lines. It just seemed like a straight up gracious congratulatory tweet to all his co-stars to acknowledge the renewal for next season. 🙂 I do believe that that Jared and Jensen will have some additional time off again. They shouldered the lions share of the acting for many years and it was exhausting for them. They now have families and young children. I personally am good with them having more time off. Just my opinion SanSummer, I realize others may differ in theirs.
Hey E, I see what you are saying but my feeling is that after Supernatural both of these guys will have no problem finding other work in the television industry. A movie career may be a little harder to start. They have both earned a lot of goodwill and respect in the industry for their professionalism and their ability to establish a positive and fun environment for people they have worked with over the last decade. Their are many many examples of TV actors who are a little, or a lot past “new young hunk” status. I could be wrong but I sincerely think these men will have work on tv as long as they chose to do it, Jensen has had some directing expierence as well so that should serve him well. 🙂
There is a lot to be said for having virtually every single person who ever worked with them say how professional they are and how much they like working with them.
I don’t doubt their integrity or their working reputation at all, I know that they are both well liked and well respected. But the fact remains that they’ve been up in Vancouver for 10 years…. that’s out of the mainstream for both network television and films. It’s going to be a tough road for them to move on after the show ends and I think that they both know that. Like I said, not impossible, but pretty tough. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Jensen begin directing more and Jared has already shown his savvy when it comes to music producing. I wonder if they will move on to something completely different altogether?
Sorry about my misspellings, I see em!:) I just can’t reply or edit at the moment.
Jared and Jensen both know that by sticking with Supernatural this long they will have enough money to retire when it’s all over. That doesn’t mean they will, but they are making enough in residuals from both Supernatural and their prior roles where they can pick and choose what they do from now on. I’d like to see Jensen do more directing and a lot of actors from other long running shows have gone on to directing. Both J’s get a lot of money by doing cons too, and I imagine those will dwindle but not end for a while. I believe Jared wants to take some time an actually spend time with the kids and their activities. So, it’s not a question if they can get other acting roles (which no doubt will be short term), but if they want to. I’m sure they won’t go straight into something for a while.
I didn’t think you doubted their integrity at all E! We all know this! 😉 I just think that will go a long way when they reach a point when or if they move on to other acting jobs. Not being in LA may work against them in some ways but having great reputations will help them also. Did Jared do some record producing? I didn’t know that. That’s great.
What a shame Jared’s facial expressions will be pleased . Is there not a mirror that can be broken to end this or will it go on to infinity and beyond ?.
I dont think Jared cares as long as he gets paid and he can negotiate for more time off next season which I think he will/has.
Awesome news! Congratulations to the entire SPN team! Very happy for us! Looking forward to a new and interesting season with my all time favorite duo- Sam and Dean/ Jared and Jensen! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
Matt Bomer winning a Golden Globe makes me think that Jensen and Jared could be up there too.
Gina Rodriguez won for Jane the Virgin. Even though musical/comedy might be more easily accepted by the industry than horror/fantasy, I hope that the writers of Supernatural will become inspired by Jane the Virgin’s success.
Game of Thrones was nominated for Best TV Series, Drama. Thus, Supernatural being a genre show should not automatically mean that it or the actors can’t be nominated for a big award. During season nine, Carver et al. referred to Game of Thrones but it’s safe to say that they didn’t reach the same quality. Is it too late for Supernatural?
Wow, 11 seasons. Congratulations to all involved with the show. If they do a full 23 episode Season 11, that will put them at 241 episodes.
Game of Thrones is a totally different situation than SPN. It is based on a series of very popular books that already had a huge fan base. It is heavily promoted and highly produced and being on HBO GOT can push the envelope like SPN cannot. Gina Rodriguez is being groomed for much bigger things than JTV. SPN is not promoted at all. Even when it won Best Drama and Best Scyfy/Fantasy PCA’s the CW hardly acknowledged it. The J’s don’t seem to want to do the Hollywood schmoozing that needs to be done in order to win these awards. It seems like they are pretty happy doing what they are doing. The fans appreciate them and that seems to be enough for Jared and Jensen. I think the show is doing alright.
I definitely agree that many different things from the get-go helped Game of Thrones become more successful than Supernatural. However, the writers of Supernatural openly acknowledged Game of Thrones to be their inspiration. So it seems that they thought that Supernatural could also have that level of quality. Supernatural not being based on any previous work shouldn’t mean that the writers just make stuff up as they go (demon Dean).
Even if Jensen and Jared delivered amazing performances in season 10 or 11, would anyone even notice at this point?
You can be inspired by a book or movie but achieving that level of production is something else. As I said the J’s don’t seem interested in doing the Hollywood game of talk shows etc. to promote themselves. Maybe in the next year or so if Jensen or Jared want to move on to other projects you might see them out there at premiers doing whatever they have to do to get more gigs. If SPN hasn’t gotten Emmy of GG recognition in the past during it’s “Golden Years” I can’t see how anything is going to change in the next few years just because it will be the last. Just because we love the show doesn’t mean that all of a sudden the tiny little network it’s on is going to somehow come up with the amount of money it would take to promote the show into a major award win. I think we will just have to love it for what it is. The best kept secret in all of TV.
I was referring to the writing. Supernatural is never going to have as impressive costumes or sets as Game of Thrones but I don’t think that’s a deal-breaker. The shows’ universes differ from each other. If Supernatural had a little bit of Americana and Kerouac going on, it could appeal to a lot of industry people too.
The special effects of Supernatural aren’t consistently great so I would encourage them to use practical effects. The Walking Dead would be a great example. But maybe they use fake-looking blood etc. on Supernatural because they need to downplay any scariness the show might have which is ironic considering that horror is supposed to be one of its main genres.
Now that the president of the network likes Supernatural very much, maybe the show could get enough support so they could try again to create the feel that the brothers are on a road trip and discovering small towns of America. I would also want them to shoot the show in a manner that would give it a darker quality instead of using bright colors and mundane locations.
They probably can’t afford the caliber of writers that GOT or TWD can afford either. Both of those shows have viewers in the tens of millions as opposed to the 2 million for SPN. Plus it looks like the CW is developing new shows for a new audience. I don’t think they are going to spend any more money on a show in it’s last one or two seasons. SPN is what it is. I don’t think anything is going to change.

It seems that the network will put resources in developing a Supernatural spinoff next year…
SPN is what it is. I don’t think anything is going to change.
I hope that the writers, the crew et al. don’t have a defeatist attitude or feel like they can just coast on the ratings. I think that there are things that they could do to improve the show. Even just going back to the feel of the earlier seasons would help immensely.
Yes and no. They may not get really known writers, but certainly in the first few years they hired excellent writers Raelle Tucker, Sera Gamble. If anything my issues are not with the new writers. Robbie Thompson puts out some quality scripts and I’ve enjoyed Robert Beren’s scripts as well. It’s the long termers, Adam Glass (hit or miss), and Ros–Lemming and Buckner that are the weak links. Getting some new, possibly less experienced blood might not be a bad idea.
As far as a spinoff goes they are going to have to put out a much better effort than the last one. That was just about the most complete failure they could have possibly come up with. I don’t know how much the CW is going to invest on another failure. I’ve said this before no matter how much we would like it to be different we can’t make the writers more talented then they are and neither can Carver or Singer. And with the possible/probable departure of both next season the show is really up in the air as far as quality going forward.
It’s interesting though I think S10 has an early season feel to it. More than it has in a long time.
I don’t know how much the CW is going to invest on another failure.
The idea seems to be that a potential spinoff would be part of Supernatural first (instead of just making a backdoor pilot) but so far there are no characters or storylines that they could use for building a new show.
Pedowitz notes that Carver’s focus this season is on THIS SEASON of #Supernatural, not creating a new show. #TCA15
Percyowner. I can’t reply directly to comments for some reason but I agree in the beginning they did hire excellent writers. And I also agree that Carver, Thompson and Berens are the best of the group. But they can’t write all 23 episodes and last season SPN seemed content with the writers they had. I just don’t know how much effort they are going to put into a show in it’s last seasons. I would love it if they would bring in new writers that were up to speed on all the seasons, cannon and lore, the intense relationship between the brothers, a compelling storyline for Castiel (since he probably isn’t going anywhere) and a more badass Crowley. I just think with losing both Carver and Singer this year and having AG taking over as showrunner (if not him than who?) I don’t see much change in the writing.
SanSummer your last quote pretty much sums up the spinoff. Carver is out after this season. His focus is on his last season. Singer is also out so his focus probably won’t be any further than this season. Kripke? Does he really want to jump back into the fandom fire? There is no way he could ever live up to the hype (much like what happened with Carver) so why would he risk another failed show. I just think what we have is what are going to get for the duration of the show. I could be wrong.
I have not seen any confirmation that Carver is leaving Supernatural. I know that NBC has committed to producing a pilot for Frequency but the article I read noted that some show runners handle multiple shows. As of now, however, I haven’t seen any announcement confirming that he will actually be leaving. Even if he does, I don’t know who would take over the show running. Glass is possible. I wouldn’t be thrilled with him, but some writers do better as show runners than writers. They might also look outside the current writing staff. True Blood is over and Raelle Tucker doesn’t seem to have a new gig and I’m sure there are other options out there that I can’t think of.
That would be awesome if they could get back one of the better writers (and a woman to boot) from the early seasons for showrunner. It would just take someone of great fortitude to jump into the fandom. It is a very critical bunch. I also wondered what happened to John Shiban. He wrote some good episodes as well. Unless we hear pretty soon about Carver’s status I think he is being swooped up by NBC. Singer just seems tired after 10 grueling seasons. We’ll see what happens over the next few weeks.
