Let’s Speculate: Supernatural 10.06, Ask Jeeves
Summary: The fun and comedic episode was penned by Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo. It’s a classic locked room mystery and finds much inspiration in the movie Clue. And I have to say, I loved it. It was old school Supernatural and yeah I’ve missed that. Thank you, Charmelo and Snyder!
The episode begins with a rich mansion with a butler and two maids preparing for a funeral of Bunny LaCroix. One maid is picking clothes out and we see her try on a necklace. A ghost, it seems, appears and kills her.
The boys are at motel when Dean shows Sam a phone – Bobby’s phone. He’s been left something by Bunny and they head to the LaCroix mansion where the LaCroix family is. The women hit on Dean and Sam while the butler warns them to leave and gives them what Bunny left Bobby, so they don’t have to stay. They find a necklace, which turns out to be a key….so of course they go back to find a lock.
Meanwhile one of the LaCroix family, Stanton, is killed by what appears to be the ghost of Bunny’s husband, Lance. When the boys get back they are detained for questioning as everyone in the house are now murder suspects. While Sam stays and talks to the youngest, Dash, Dean tries to check for clues in the case.
Dean finds Olivia and comes back to find Sam playing cards with the women. They think that Bunny and Lance are ghosts. They think the butler did something. Dean goes to find Phillip, the butler, while Sam investigates and tries to avoid the advances of an older LaCroix woman. While Dean is talking to Phillip, Sam finds Phillip’s dead body. He texts Dean who is then knocked down by his “Phillip” and finds left behind flesh….it’s a shapeshifter!
Dean discovers Dash and Amber are having an affair while Sam distracts the older LaCroix women with his large hands. They all gather together and find the police detective dead and then the fun of accusation begins! The family accuses Sam and Dean of being the murderers…..and then they see the video camera and they realize the maid is holding the family hostage. And the maid is Bunny’s daughter!
Sam and Dean get out of the locked room and Sam engages Olivia while Dean goes to get the silver bullets. Sam finds out that Bunny had an affair with a shapeshifter and Olivia was the child of that affair. Bobby killed Olivia’s father and spared her life but required Bunny to lock Olivia away for her own good, so Bunny kept her in the attic. Just as she is about to kill Sam, Dean kills her and then keeps shooting as a stunned Sam looks on.
The episode ends with the boys telling Dash to forget they were there and then a serious conversation in the car between them where Sam asks Dean about the extra shots. Sam wants to know if it’s demon residue or the mark but Dean dismisses it as the first kill and then turns up the radio to Bob Seger.
Questions:
That was pretty fun, right?
So do you think Dean’s exuberance about the Olivia kill was what he said, just the first kill back? Or is Sam right to be concerned?
So what are your thoughts, reactions, feelings? Leave them here!
This was GREAT……HILARIOUS……..
I do believe Dean woke something UP….
Reminds me of the episode where the boys were on the ranch and wore glasses to see HELL HOUNDS
I know a lot of you did not like that episode but I love seeing the upper society classes get down and dirty.:p
i really liked this one a lot. I have to say that i’m so loving this season so far. I love that this show has gone back to it’s original roots. don’t get me wrong, I like cas and I like Crowley..but I like them sparingly. the angel stuff is not the most interesting or exciting, but I do enjoy cas and I understand the boys need supporting stories so they can get time off….and i’m all for it. but to be honest, Crowley and cas, though both wonderful characters, are best I think when used more sparingly. it’s all that much more enjoying when we get to see them again….so far this season has focused on sam and dean and I couldn’t be happier. I love the old school monster of the week eps…I love the case by case work that they started doing…..saving people hunting things….not so much the big picture stuff…..but focusing on individuals … and focusing on themselves….:)
I thought this eppy was a laugh a minute…..loved when dean was discovering all the ‘clue” weapons like the rope, the wrench, the lead pipe ….and sam the knife and the revolver….love the game clue and this was a perfect spn rendition of it. nothing makes me laugh more than sam getting ogled by cougars…:D watching him play cards with the ladies….I almost peed my pants from laughing…..and sam telling ms. cougar hound that he’s right behind her and makes a mad dash…..priceless:D at least they weren’t 75 this time. 🙂
love when they use seeger songs. loved the “then” recap….knew from that alone we were in for a joyous ride.
loved with all that humor they didn’t forget about the underlying problem….which is dean and his mark…..
sam is right to be worried….that was extreme overkill by dean….I think he fired like 6 or 7 times….how many times did he have to kill her anyway? loved sam showing his concern as he’s right to be. dean once again illustrates that denial ain’t just a river in Egypt. but as much as dean tried to gloss over what happened, it looks to me like both sam and dean know better…..I don’t think it’s going to be very long til dean admits to sam the truth…..dean can’t run away this time…he’s going to have to face his demon(moc) and find a way to deal with it…..on the bright side, sam will be there with him every step of the way….and I know they will eventually find a way to get rid of the mark….;)
Thanks nappi. I think she may have gotten a few emails!:) Thanks Alice! Some of us were talking about the absent amulet. It is disappointing but I guess from a technical aspect, they may not want that clunky thing in every car shot but I wouldn’t mind in the least. It would be a nice reminder. So the butler was Roy from Faith?? Wow, missed that completely. It WAS fun wasn’t it! The whole season has been fun for me so far.
Odd, this reply was to nappi’s post below, I don’t know how it ended up way up here.:)
I liked this episode a lot. Despite the murders it was pretty light and funny. I don’t know anything about the game Clue, nor the movie, so I probably missed a lot of references, but it was enjoyable all the same. As always it was fun to see Sam around the ladies, though he seemed especially fidgety this episode.
It looks like the next episodes are going to be much more serious again, I can’t wait for that. I’m really curious how they are going to deal with the mark permanently.
For your future watching enjoyment, find lots of info here (”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluedo”). for a quick ref, Sam and Dean pick up murder weapons from the game, candlestick, rope, wrench, knife, lead pipe….. Also, on the doors, I saw one or two labeled (but couldn’t make all of them out) library, conservatory, bedroom…
Watch Dean face when he ‘double takes’ like when he opens the secret passage, picks up a lead pipe, picks up the rope and looks at them both….
Very kind. TYSVM
Thanks. 🙂
Loved the episode. The music was funny and we were getting the tremors from the MOC again.
I have liked all the episodes this far. 🙂

Some of us can’t seem to log in and don’t have a profile. Anyhoo, I liked this episode it was fun! I do have one question, whats up with the shapeshifters in this show? They shed their skin, they don’t shed their skin, they shed their skin. Confused as to the rules of shapeshifters.:) At least reaper lore had a sort of evolution even if we disagree. Didn’t take away from my being entertained however. So far, so good this season. The only speculation I have is- buckle up, Dean is in trouble. Again. Sam is on it though, I’m not worried.;) Thanks Bookdal.
it wouldn’t let me log in either…had to comment as a guest…does anyone know if we have to do something about that?
Hi nappi, as of this morning some of us (on the cbox) still are not able to. I think Alice has been made aware. We will let her know if it keeps happening.:)
Hey Leah…wrote Alice for us this morning…she fixed the problem. Thanks though.
Second viewing and always catch what I missed and realize how funny this ep really is.
Did notice two continuity errors but not a big deal…..first dean asked what are these people and Sam replied I think they’re called wasps. Both boys know what a wasp is….see provenance. The pendant wasn’t hanging from mirror…thought that to be a bigger faux pas.
The butler is Roy le grange from faith. Didn’t realize it first time, he lost a lot of weight.
Loved clue references especially calling Phillip wads worth. Dash and Amber did it in the conservatory in the closet..lol.
When the cop called out “Sam Winchester”‘ , reminded me when he was calling Sam out in ass. Poor dirk the jerk.
The maid referred to dean as the cute dumb one…lol, not true but it made me giggle.
Even had a whatever happened to baby Jane reference, though never saw that movie.
Rizzoli and isles ..lol
Never really heard what the ladies were discussing as they were molesting Sam…the size of his hands lol….It still cracked me up when dean arrived..sorry for interrupting….lmao
Always love it when they play Seger songs….waiting for against the wind…
Dean was way too defensive and had way too much anger towards the maid when he shot her and T Sam for asking….dean is in denial mode now, but they both know that won’t last.
Loved this ep.
Hi. When you wrote ” The pendant wasn’t hanging from mirror… ” were you referring to the amulet from the play Dean put on the review mirror of the Impala? You are right it was not there. Also if you go back to Fan Fiction you will notice another slip up with amulet. Marie-SAm gave Dean the amulet at the intermission of the play. Then Dean and Sam watched the closing scene of the play while the family play characters sang Carry On wayward Son. Dean was supposed to have the amulet in his pocket but the girl playing Dean in the play was wearing it. Also does anyone know what is up with or the the purpose of these artist -picture/ painting looking end scenes? I thought it was just an edgy end for the play/ fan fiction episode but they did it again. I think it is interesting but does not really go with the vibe of this show. Just wondering. I did enjoy ASK Jeeves, light and funny….. I loved all the CLUE weapons.
At the end of FF I wondered if Dean was going to keep the amulet on the rear view or take to his room in the bunker (by the way have they gone back to the bunker since the lake? They seem to have hit the road and not gone home). I just figured that he took it too his room or it’s in his pocket. Dean said what he wanted to say when he hung it up there. It will be interesting to see if it reappears. I agree with you about the Impala at the end. Real Baby please.
In regard to the amulet, I agree, main idea is that Dean accepted it and hung it up; will be interested too to see if it reappears. Good point: To our viewer knowledge I think they have not been home/ bunker AND Dean has not been shown sleeping…. shown up early last two eps tooling around the Impala… immortality! What to do with the MOC? That should also be interesting as well. In regard to the MOC Jensen tweeted “Hey @Omundson any idea how to get this thing off my arm? No? Didn’t think so. #TattooRegrets #burcon #SPNFamily” Great sense of humor!
On the subject of the amulet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJjiPYNU-mU
Nice. Thanks. 🙂
I noticed that too and I just figured that marie had more than one:D
Marie had a least 2, one fell out her pocket
when she gave Dean his samulet.
Most productions have MULTIPLE props. FYI
Hi NOL and Napp. Thanks. that would explain it. I guess we draw on our own experience and my Catholic High School play productions were low budget! No extra props there!
”It was old school Supernatural and yeah I’ve missed that.”
This was not old school Supernatural. I’m sorry, but do people even remember how the show use to be?
This episode made ”Bugs” look Emmy worthy.
This was pure cornball trash. The direction & music was deplorable. You’d think you were watching a “horror” movie directed by the people the made Porky’s. I can’t believe this is what Jared and Jensen signed on for. The writers & director created one of the most embarrassing episodes in Supernatural history – and that’s saying something considering the horseshit they’ve fed us the past few years.
This episode was okay; a light and fun take on Clue, and the shapeshifter being the guilty party was a nice twist. Awkward Sam is funny and I don’t think anyone was surprised by the fact that Dean is not okay and things are only going to get worse from here. I just hope it doesn’t take flying anvils for Dean to become aware of this, and he admits it to himself and Sam before too long.
Fun episode unti the end when the MOC showed up. You knew just from the look on Dean’s face that he was not lighthearted Dean anymore! Hope he and Sam can work on this issue together. They are both worried and they both know it.
This was a fun episode; not emmy worthy or anything, but lighthearted, fun and with some key tidbits that let us know where things are going. It’s nice that this ground work was laid so openly and obviously; Dean’s in trouble and we all know it, including Dean even thought he can’t admit to it right now. One of the issues that I had with season 9 was that the tidbits about what was going on with Dean and the affects of the MoC were too obscure; half the time I couldn’t tell if we were supposed to be noticing anything or not which interrupted the progression of the story. Here it’s pretty clear that we should be concerned. Sam certainly is, and poor Dean is living in Egypt. I hope that he will come around sooner than later as well, but these boys are not known for their personal insights and self actualization, so I can wait a bit for Dean to come around. I don’t mind Dean being in denial for a bit as that is totally in character.
I was glad that we got a bit of Sam insight here and he had some nice moments with Dash as the story unfolded. It’s about time Sam got to speak to someone other than Dean, and his interactions with the cougar was hilarious. I especially loved the “Grey Gardens” comment…. heeee!
The episode was a bit clunky and it seemed like there was a lot of “you stay here and I’ll go look…” which was kind of annoying. And there is one thing that I think Ginger mentioned in another review that I really agree with: I am getting tired of the people the boys are helping being awful, clueless, unsympathetic wackjobs who don’t deserve the Winchester’s help. I know that it was necessary for this episode especially, but there’s been a lot of this lately. Why are all of the characters who are not Sam, Dean or Cas so awful? The girls putting on the play were snotty, entitled and stubborn, even the cold open of some of the episodes show soon to be victims behaving deplorably before they’re killed, making me think that Sam and Dean should just stay home and not interfere and good riddance to an annoying victim who’s done the world of a favor by getting killed. And when was the last time we saw a decent angel out side of Cas? The people who Sam and Dean are helping are supposed to be representations of us. Well, I’m not an entitled, spoiled school girl nor am I an entitled, clueless socialite. I’d like to see Sam and Dean help someone that I LIKE for a change.
Hi E. This comment is off subject here. Just wanted you to know that I responded to your concerns about the amulet you made in comments on the Alice’s review article “Fan Fiction”. Hope it helps.
I thought it was pretty entertaining. Not the best written or directed, but I enjoyed watching the guys have a little fun and have an old school kind of case. My only issue with it was the last shot. They’ve added some new music this season, which is fine, but that last exchange with Dean turning up the music and then Sam looking out the window, then the fake scenery….weird. Kind of poor production values and really awkward. Not the best episode, but I kind of liked them slowly getting back to business. And uncomfortable Sam being cougared is always entertaining, especially Dean’s reaction to it.
That looks like CGI or something else the VFX department would do.
It was in last episodes ending as well but I said its a fantasy TRIBUTE episode to the fans and let it go.
Hope this is not every episode because MY generation does not like all the fake computer graphics in film these days.
*Extremely amused* So….. Last week we saw who Dean gets hooked up with. This week, we see who Sam keeps getting hooked up with. Even with taking way a ‘cougars’ tendency to stay bendy with yoga. and proclivity toward Kegel exercises to increase mutual pleasure, I think Dean would rather be in Sams shoes.
Very kind. TYSVM
This episode was a lot of fun and had some pretty good lines. And yes. Dean’s killing of Olivia is most definitely a problem. It was not normal and Sam is worried, and Dean, I’m not sure. It might have felt normal to him even although it wasn’t. Hopefully Dean will heed is bro now that they’re on the same page.
Did anyone notice if the new Samulet was on the rearview mirror?
good question. I did not see it but oops, guess I gotta watch AGAIN…..:D
Sorry about the typos. I’m at work and in a hurry. Call me embarrassed. I’m not that bad at grammar.
I enjoyed the episode too, though I did think the music was a bit too over the top. But overall, a very entertaining episode. Here’s a question though: in the ‘Then’ montage, they seemed to spend a lot of time spelling out different monsters the boys have encountered. I wonder what the point of that really was, considering that the monster in this episode was of a species they had encountered before. Anyone have any ideas?
I wondered about it too. I came to the conclusion that they really didn’t have much to reference for this episode, so they just went with a montage of previous Monsters of the Week.
THEN montages are for the casual viewer…not US 😉
I think the point of the montage was two- fold: MOC and Dean is still in trouble and the whole CLUE game theme- Can you guess which monster is the killer- in the montage they reviewed your choices.
This was a really fun epi! I liked that it had a nice old mystery novel feel and the way the boys worked together felt like the good old times. And we learned that wearing flannel makes you instantaneously dangerous, and that the boys are homosexual murderers! 😀 I laughed so much at how awkward and flustered Sam reacted to the women hitting on him 🙂 although at the same time I felt so sorry for the poor guy, he looked so uncomfortable!
The end was a bit more dark, though – Dean repeatedly shooting the shapeshifter was kinda scary, and Sam looked scared of Dean as well in this moment. I think that’s the Mark showing, and that Sam was right being worried about Dean. I can’t wait to see where all this goes!
10.06 Ask Jeeves didn’t have a lot of substance, which is definitely a downside. However, it was nice to see an episode that had just Sam and Dean. Those episodes have become all too rare.
Many of the characters seemed to be more like caricatures.
I wanted to see Stanford Sam give those WASPs a run for their money. 😀
Sam said, “We, — we — we didn’t personally know her. Our — our surrogate dad, Bobby Singer, did.” It seems that they mean Sam really thinks that Bobby was his surrogate father. I’ve always felt that Dean saw Bobby as a father figure but Bobby was more like a mix between a mentor and a friend for Sam.
I didn’t like that the Winchesters weren’t the ones to figure out that the cross was a key.
This episode had some beauty shots of Jensen.
The actress who played the maid reminded me of Jamie King.
The following was an aww moment:
Dash: Well, Sam, I’ll let you in on a little family secret. We don’t really like each other. Then again, what family does?
Sam: Mine does. Uh, for the most part. It’s just my brother and me so…
I’m so starved for seeing Sam have a friend that the discussion between Sam and Dash got me excited even though I knew that the Harvard guy was going to be a one-off character and he wasn’t going to be particularly sympathetic. I thought the actors had good chemistry though.
I liked seeing Sam play cards with the ladies and win! He does well in upscale environments. 😀
I also liked the moment when the detective yelled, “Sam Winchester? Where did you run off to?”
The flirting that centered around Sam will probably be the most memorable part of this episode for me. Sam tricking Beverly so he could just pass by her door was funny. The best part was Sam trying to work the two ladies at the same time by channeling Dean. “Well, then, uh… Come on in, darling. Water’s warm.” Beverly playing with Sam’s hair seemed to be a shout-out to the fans and Heddy marveled Sam’s long fingers like Gert from 3.06 Red Sky at Morning 😀
“Oh, he’s — he’s — he’s calling to me, so…” was a cute little brother moment. Sam was relieved to have Dean back so he could escape from the awkward situation. It reminded me a little bit of episode 7.08 Season Seven, Time for a Wedding! when Sam told Becky he was gonna call Dean.
I thought it was oddly callous that they just left the detective’s body in such an undignified position. (Although maybe even Sam and Dean treated it like a crime scene?)
The line, “Not to mention homosexuals,” made me laugh.
“Well, that explains the dust,” was a good reaction when it was revealed that Olivia was not a real maid.
“Lucky for me, the cute, dumb one let me out.” 😀 That was a good twist.
Although the monster was probably supposed to be insane, I thought that the actress was a bit too over the top.
I don’t understand why Bobby had demanded that the child should be locked up. Sam had to try to calm her down but I thought it was weird that he seemed to think that Bobby hadn’t done anything wrong. I think they just wanted to do their version of the horror trope where a “bad” child is locked away in an attic.
Dean seemed off when he had to make his point to Dash and touched him on the shoulder.
The ending was disappointing. Dean was literally going OMG, Sam! And he said, “It’s — why am I even explaining this to you?” Sigh. Dean regressed instead of being open with Sam and Sam didn’t dare to push him.
Quoting SanSummer1 “Many of the characters seemed to be more like caricatures”. Funny I was just saying the same thing to someone! But I do think that was by design it was supposed to be like those snooty rich people who are in those kind of mysteries. Like the characters in Trial and Error (is that the one where S&D wear cute glasses?) I don’t think they are supposed to be realistic or likeable. 🙂
I agree, LEAH.
The episode was sort of like a play. The actors probably had a lot of fun with the absurdity of the situations and characters. However, I can’t help but wonder whether they ever felt a little uncomfortable that the joke they did over and over again was “a good-looking guy is pursued by older women who are very forward even though he is not interested.” The actresses were committed to it though. Beverly had a Marilyn Monroe-esque look when she said, “I’ve resorted to fishing online because the live ones won’t bite.” 🙂 And I liked the way the actress who played Heddy said, “Boo. I’m feeling so left out.”
And hey, when you have two men like the Winchesters dropped on your doorstep… 😀
Jared tweeted something about watching until after the credits rolled. Does anyone know what he was talking about?
Not sure but I THINK he may have been referring to the dedication. Which wasn’t after the credits but he may not have known for sure where it was going to be. Thing is I have no idea who that was. Anyone?
It was the directors father.
Thanks Cheryl.
The episode is dedicated to someone who has passed away. Maybe Jared was referring to that?
I did like this to a point, but I still wish we had more of a deeper conversation to what Sam began in Paper Moon. What is Dean now? A revenant, a zombie? Why have we not seen the aftermath of the MoC until now? And wouldn’t it have been nice to have a phone call from Cas checking in on Dean? And my hubby asked what does it mean that we had for the second week both scenes from the outside of the hotels and CGI drive aways at the end? Is it merely budgetary? I love this show so much so I do not want to be overly critical, but I wonder….
Oh I did also wonder why they did not identify real silver? In their line of work where lives depends on it, you would think they would know to look for marks. Did anyone else see this as a plot device and not how experienced hunters woud be?
Yes! This crossed my mind as well…. as if these boys wouldn’t recognize that the silver was fake!? Please, they’ve been melting down silver for silver bullets since they were kids! They’d have spotted the fake stuff from a mile off. This is the kind of small bits of sloppy writing that drives me nuts. Is it critical? No, but does it let us fans know continually that we know more than they do? Yes. TPTB needed the story to show the boys trying to find the shifter and then realizing that they were using the wrong method so they wrote them not recognizing fake silver. But any long time fan would know that these boys would be able to spot the real stuff from a mile off. Nobody on the writing staff is thinking on that deep a level about the boys’ history or characterization so we get these sloppy little moments that all the fans then spot and call them on it. Kripke would have made whomever rewrite that part of the story so that it fit with overall canon and didn’t make the boys look dumb.
you may know me by now to rationalize a faux pas such as this to give the writers the benefit of the doubt:p:D…I agree that sam and dean would know the real thing….I chocked this one up to the fact that they were in the house of an heiress who was obviously quite wealthy…..and that they simply just assumed the silver was real because I noticed that they never really “looked at it”, like dean had done in shape shifter when he found the file opener.
because these writers have been around a long time…..i’m sticking with that. 😉
damn it double posted….sorry
kevin parks was the Continuity person last I heard.
did he move on or what…..
[kevin was an AD for a long time and last year Directed his 1st SPN]
Yes, and they thought the ugly cross was real and they didn’t spot it was a key …
Old-school Sam and Dean wouldn’t have needed the scene in the pawn shop at all to be honest, maybe it was supposed to back up the theory that they aren’t good with treasure?
It didn’t make a lot of sense to me either.
Sorry typo! Would be!
I think the only way for dean to get rid of the mark is for Cain to take it back, til that happens, wonder if witchcraft will come into play as a temporary bandaid:o
I hope not
‘I hate witches with their bodily fluids….’
I’d like to hear people’s thoughts on why older women go for Sam more than they do for Dean. 🙂
Is it because Sam is younger than Dean? Sam might seem like he is their type because they get the feeling that Sam is educated and a good listener, there is a certain innocence to him and he is not hitting on other women. Maybe they like the chase and they get the impression that Dean would be likely to pursue a woman immediately if he was interested.
I think Beverly and Heddy were trying to get a hot younger guy like Sam in bed partly because they were looking for a boost to their self-esteem. They wanted to feel young and desirable.
Gert said to Sam, “You remind me of my late husband… He was shy too … till we got below deck.” (3.06 Red Sky at Morning) One might say that she was just batty and missed her late husband but I think she saw the boy in Sam and liked it.
I think Gert would have loved to be Sam’s sugar mama whereas the sisters were looking for physical passion (someone like Sam) or a rich man.
Well here is my (most likely politically incorrect) thinking on this. I have been watching a certain article this week with people commenting on it who, as far as I am concerned, take their fantasies WAY too seriously (and some of whom feel the need to be rude to everyone involved with the show as a result) and I think that is partly why I watched this episode with a sense of the joy and fun in life getting restored, and why it was more enjoyable to me than Fan Fiction was.
Yes these women can be described as pushy and spoiled and too old for Sam. But you know what, when Dean flirts with undergrads the age difference is now about the same as this! Ok not as large as is implied in the episode (that Sam is 32 (going on 5000) and one of the women is 49) but in ACTUAL age difference (Jared is 32 and that actress is 42 – the other actress is admitting to nothing, which is actually pretty sad for her that it is necessary). But that is just numbers, not really my point.
Also Dean was totally checking out the women – HE clearly didn’t think they were beyond the bounds of possibility. I notice neither one of them had any time for the vacuous ‘child bride’.
What is so fun about this is both the women are not afraid of going for what they want. Have no problem telling Sam what they want (mostly just to play). And in the 3 occasions that Sam walked away from them they let him go (the ‘lactose intolerant’ comment was the funniest thing ever – partly because you could see it coming 😀 ). A case of we can all play along as long as we want to and then we will stop when one of the parties says it is not happening.
Sam came back to THEM, he was flirting with THEM, and the scene on the sofa with them wrapped all over him was just … well I hope there are outtakes is all …
If they were really serious wouldn’t there have been more backbiting between the two of them? They both knew they weren’t going to ‘get’ him, so they were just enjoying themselves. They were having a discussion about his hands, and plaiting his hair – which from my point of view had WAY too much ‘Dean’s reaction shot’ and not nearly enough of us being able to join in on that particular subject 😀
Yes Sam shudders as he walks away from the sofa, no it isn’t what he wants, but he was acting up to the women so why shouldn’t they continue to play along? There isn’t much worse wrong with those people than they are bored. The people in Trial and Error were nasty, I didn’t see that in these people.
And both of those women are very beautiful (as are Jody, and Ellen and Gert) – just because youth is the only thing considered ‘beautiful’ in a woman as far as popular culture goes, doesn’t make it true ;). All the women in this episode were hilarious, and great actresses and I hope all of them get a chance to come back on the show.
I thought the whole thing was hilarious, in a way that Red Ship at Night wasn’t, because Gert really WAS too old for Sam (and a lecherous old man would be too old for a 23 year old girl too) and so it wasn’t that funny.
Oh and Sam was totally ripping them off at cards too – much to their puzzlement. ‘Look at me I don’t even know how to hold cards, never mind win! What is this game again? Oh did i win? Lucky me!’
I totally get that YMMV on this but I was hugely entertained.
eilf, I agree that the age difference wasn’t so big anymore. And Dean’s reactions to Heddy’s come-ons showed that she had a shot with him at first.
However, the women being older was played up (for comedic purposes). So I still wonder why older women who are on the prowl tend to focus more on Sam rather than on Dean. Maybe Sam’s awkwardness in those situations appeals to them because they get the impression that underneath that is a man who would be a wild partner in the bedroom. (“I bet a young buck like you can do a lot in 10 minutes.” “Did you see how long his fingers were?”)
Although maybe this episode merely showed that Beverly preferred Sam to Dean and Heddy preferred Dean to Sam initially. Then the women had less access to Dean because he was wandering around the house so they zeroed in on Sam.
If they were really serious wouldn’t there have been more backbiting between the two of them?
Beverly: No. No. No. No! Ugh.
Heddy: Wait, wait, wait. Go back. He owned an island.
Beverly: And a harelip.
Heddy: Well, who cares if he’s ugly if you’re drinking Mai Tais in the lap of luxury?
Sam: Hey. Hey, ladies.
Heddy: Hi.
Sam: What are you doing?
Heddy: Trying to find Beverly a man.
I think that for some reason Beverly was more in need of a man and Heddy was trying to help her land a good one. Of course that didn’t mean that Heddy wanted to be left out when Sam was giving Beverly special attention.
They both knew they weren’t going to ‘get’ him, so they were just enjoying themselves.
Beverly: I’ve resorted to fishing online because the live ones won’t bite.
Sam: You mean back there? I-I was just playing hard-to-get.
Beverly: Well, then… You’re a very convincing actor. Come.
Later:
Heddy: I knew those boys were trailer trash the moment they rolled up in that American-made.
Beverly: Not to mention homosexuals.
Heddy: Ugh. Homosexual murderers. Like Leopold and Loeb.
Beverly: Only hotter. Mmm.
I got the impression that the rejections had stung a little.
And I think there was desperation in Beverly like when she flung herself at Dean in the bathroom.
They were having a discussion about his hands, and plaiting his hair – which from my point of view had WAY too much ‘Dean’s reaction shot’ and not nearly enough of us being able to join in on that particular subject 😀
I also thought that the camera stayed on Dean’s face for too long. A part of the problem was that I didn’t quite understand his reaction.
Dean: Should I come back when you’re done?
Sam: Oh, he’s… he’s… he’s calling to me, so…
Dean: And it’s all going to hell right here, right now. — —- —- (to Sam) Sorry to interrupt.
Dean was looking at the two women being all over Sam. Was his comment also due to that?
Oh and Sam was totally ripping them off at cards too – much to their puzzlement. ‘Look at me I don’t even know how to hold cards, never mind win! What is this game again? Oh did i win? Lucky me!’
I loved the scene where they were playing cards! Such a classic thing to do. It was just a small moment in the episode but the scene was very picturesque.
Dean: Should I come back when you’re done?
Sam: Oh, he’s… he’s… he’s calling to me, so…
Dean: And it’s all going to hell right here, right now. — —- —- (to Sam) Sorry to interrupt.

I think that was just Dean messing with Sam – exactly like Sam did to Dean over the shipping names last week. He was just being funny, it happens so rarely any more we have sort of forgotten when they just used wind each other up, because they are brothers and that’s what you do. Anyway I doubt very much that Sam came up with the ‘seducing the ladies’ idea all on his lonesome – that has ‘Dean brainwave’ written all over it.
Though in general it is so nice to see again Sam doing things himself without being ordered around like a soldier (like last season) that I would also happily go for the idea that it wasn’t Dean’s idea and that he genuinely was surprised to see Sam canoodling on the sofa 🙂 Sam did all the distracting of the shapeshifter at the end of the episode deliberately so yay for non-damseling all round…
I don’t think though, if you look back over the series, that older women are more into Sam than Dean. Weren’t the woman in the magic shop and the woman that Sam Dean and Crowley met when they were looking for historical papers (or something – you know the episode with the scene in the park where Crowley is stealing candybars and Sam is doing a good imitation of a meerkat) both into Dean? (they are both older than these sisters)
Also the hunter woman who turned into a ghost – she had a foxhole thing with all ages ….
I love the fact that the difference between all these women is only how the show interprets them – in some cases they are much the same age I guess…(I looked ‘Annie’ up – she’s a year older than ‘Heddy’).
I thought that up until the end when the Mark made it’s presence felt in a genuinely unnerving way (!) that this was just intended a lighthearted romp. And it succeded pretty well 🙂 I would prefer my SPN to be less campy than the last two weeks have been but at least this had some old style vibes between the brothers which was great.
Maybe older women like Sam in particular because to them Sam is like a mix between an alpha male and a sweet, awkward boy. The ladies in 10.06 Ask Jeeves found Sam attractive because he looked like a sexy bad boy but at the same time they could tell that he was intelligent. Sam being Stanford-educated might have also come into play even though Sam didn’t comment on his background. (Heddy bragged about Dash: He’s Bunny’s great-nephew — Harvard business.)
Funny you should mention 9.16 Blade Runners because I was just gonna add that example to my previous post! It was Dean who the curator flirted with in the episode. I think it’s interesting that both Sam and Dean were posing as FBI agents at the time.
I think that when older women pursue Sam, it’s made into a bigger deal on the show. It becomes an integral part of the episode maybe because Sam is not used to being hit on blatantly. When Dean is the center of attention, it seems to be more about showing that Dean is wanted by all women.
I didn’t get the impression that Dean had suggested to Sam that he should pretend to be interested in the ladies. I think Sam came up with that on his own because it was the only way he could get close enough to the women after having turned Beverly down.
I love the fact that the difference between all these women is only how the show interprets them – in some cases they are much the same age I guess…
I agree. At first Dean liked how forward Heddy was but eventually her personality ruined whatever physical attraction there was.
PS. I don’t know if you did it intentionally but I like that you referred to episode 3.06 Red Sky at Morning as
Red Ship at Night
🙂
*blush* Heh I never realized! :p See this is how my brain works when I don’t look stuff up – it makes random connections. The only bit of that episode that I like even remotely is the ship in the dark on the skyline. I pretty much never watch it.
Sam is like a mix between an alpha male and a sweet, awkward boy.
*agrees enthusiastically* Ahem, I mean, I see your point there…
Thought you meant the fandom.
Oh! I should’ve been clearer. 😀
I will offer you my opinion. I love both Jared and Jensen, but truth be told, I love Jared more. I think he is beautiful..I mean like a beautiful work of art. It’s more than that. He isn’t just beautiful on the outside. He is also on the inside. I’ve been blessed to have been able to see him at cons. I’ve gotten the chance to talk to him, if ever so briefly. Jared is a genuinely nice, down to earth humble smart and funny man. I love how much he adores his wife and his children and his friends. He really is just downright love able.
I am a Sam girl as well. I’ve always been drawn to SAMs character, though I love them both. Watching Sam Winchester for ten years now, i have nothing but admiration for his character.
But if I were to have tuned in for the first time this passed Tuesday, I would instantly go for Sam not knowing anything about him:D. I am speaking from the shallow end of the pool here and totally objectifying him. Sam is stunning. I mean those cheekbones, his hair, his eyes, and that smile. Not to mention his physique….and he has the cutest ass:D. Now from an older woman’s standpoint. I think both men and women strive to keep their youth as long as possible. Look how middle aged men long for women in their twenties. Makes sense that a middle aged woman would want the same. its a way to feel young and feel beautiful.
Now both boys are young and handsome, but Sam, even though he is a man in his thirties, looks young enough to pass for a guy in his twenties. There is a boyish look to him. Add to that his general physique, a woman longing to feel young again might be more attracted to Sam….listen to what she said…a young buck like you could do a lot in ten min…..oh to feel young again and who better with:D
Thank you for your reply, nappi815!
Yes, I think that Sam being the younger brother sends a vibe that some of the older female characters have responded to on the show. They like that he is “shy” or “coy” but also that he looks like he would be great in bed.
Even though the age difference between the Winchesters and the sisters wasn’t that big in these modern times, age became a big deal because of how the sisters behaved. It was clear that Sam being younger than them was one of biggest things that made him attractive in their eyes and they wanted to be younger themselves.
Dash seemed to be around the same age as Sam. When Heddy introduced Dash to the Winchesters, she said, “And then there’s Dash. That’s the baby of the family.”
Heddy: “Old lady”?! I — [looks over at Sam and Dean] I’m 39.
Dash [also looking at Sam and Dean]: And you have been since ’03.
Heddy: How — how dare you.
Beverly [to Sam]: You know, they say women just get better with age, like a fine wine or — or cheese.
So if the sisters had slept with someone who was both young and hot, they would have felt more attractive.
By the way, isn’t Jared naturally flirtatious (during conventions etc.)? Sam, on the other hand, isn’t quite sure how he should react when someone shows interest in him. 🙂
I wouldn’t say Jared is flirtatious, I never saw him that way and I’ve been to five cons……he’s just friendly and outgoing and a big goofball, which. Is one of his most endearing qualities:D.
I remember my first con. It was chicon, season 2. Back then it was a little different as there weren’t as many guests as now. So Jared went on and he was just so comfortable and chatty. If you didn’t love him before, by the time his half hour was up….total infatuation:D. Then it was Jensen and I remember thinking how delicate he looks in person:D. He was nice and he answered every question asked, but he seemed uncomfortable…like you know how you have to behave if you go to grandmas house as opposed to how you would behave in your own house. Then Jared came out and Jensens whole demeanor changed. His shoulders relaxed and he started talking to Jared and he laughed more and he joked more and you can see him starting to feel comfortable, like he was home….that’s what Jared was for Jensen…home, and that was the moment Jared touched my heart ..that’s when he had me……anyhow digressed a bit….my apologies;)
I was hoping you would share your convention story so thank you!
What do you mean by Jensen looking delicate in person? 🙂 Was it his “pretty boy” looks?
Jared looks in person like he does on tv. He’s tall. He’s handsome. He’s built and yes, he is firm all over:D Jensen looks bigger on tv. Jensen wears all those layers he looks bulky. In person he is thinner. He is still just as handsome and he is tall. He looks more like a model in person:D
Wow, interesting!
Dean does look “bigger” than Sam although neither of the actors carry extra weight.
I’ve seen some people say that Jared looks better in person than he does in pictures or on the show and that Jensen looks in person exactly like he does in his pictures (and that’s why Jensen was/is a model).
Dean does look “bigger” than Sam although neither of the actors carry extra weight.
Heh! That’s kind of funny given Jared’s history with working out. Remember him in seasons 4 and 5? He was Gigantic! I remember Jensen saying all the way back in like season 3 that it was way too hard to maintain that kind of muscle mass, so he had pretty much stopped trying to get too bulky, just staying fit even though TPTB were being encouraged both of them to bulk up. I think Jared’s figured that out now too. He had slimmed way down by season 6 and due to injuries (a rib broken while skiing in season 7 (?) and his shoulder in season 9/10) He’s had to curtail the weight lifting and I don’t know that he has a lot of desire to increase his muscle mass again. Jensen said that this was the first time since season 2 that he had more muscle mass than Jared. I like lanky Jared…I think he looks fabulous!
I also think he looks good leaner! And I like when his face is thinner because it brings out his bone structure better.
Jared lost some weight because of his shoulder injury but I think he looked especially good in episode 2 – Reichenbach. Lean and mean. I loved the two jackets they had chosen for Sam. Even the sling emphasized him looking like a badass. 😀
Yeah!!! A badass who killed two werewolves with his left hand only….. ! :p
Yeah! 😀
I wish the show won’t pull back from Sam being an excellent hunter and fighter now that Dean is back…
That is kind of interesting, as much as I think Jensen is beautiful on the inside and out and a piece of art also, when I think of photo ops I am a little more nervous about meeting Jensen. Jared has a more approachable quality. I honestly think they are both awesome people, wonderful daddies, and great husbands. I do think Jensen is by nature more reserved and Jared is his “home” I think, especially at cons. I think they probably have been really good for each other in different ways. Jared is more bubbly and spontaneous and Jensen a little more measured in his responses and I think a little of each has rubbed off on the other. I love how they light up when they see each other. Just lovely men, both of them.:)
I love these con stories! I wonder if there could be an article for some of the fans most favorite or memorable con stories…. or a comment section where people who’ve had terrific encounters at cons could describe them. As someone who will probably never go to a con or meet any of the cast or crew (unless I bump into them randomly on the street; I live in NYC so it could happen!) I can’t get enough of people’s encounters and stories of meeting the people connected with our show.
I wonder why the Js don’t do THE TONIGHT SHOW OR LETTERMAN….
is Vampire Diaries shot in CANADA…
seems like the Canadian shot shows don’t do a lot of talk or chat shows.
It’s creepy that Bobby had been taking care of young Sam all the while knowing that there was a child – around the same age as Sam – locked up in an attic because Bobby himself had made the mother promise to keep the child away from others. What would Bobby have done if he had found out that he was looking after a child who had demon blood in him? Or better yet, a child who the demon had plans for?
It’s clear what Bobby’s opinion had been on the nature vs. nurture debate. Bobby had thought that a monster is a monster so they need to be killed or locked up even when they are young babies.
That line of thinking is uncomfortably close to how Gordon had justified his actions. After all, Bobby hadn’t believed that monsters can have a choice.
2.10 Hunted
Gordon: I’m surprised at you, Dean. Getting all emotional. I’d heard you were more of a professional than this. Look, let’s say you were cruising around in that car of yours and, uh, you had little Hitler riding shotgun, right? Back when he was just some goofy, crappy artist. But you knew what he was going to turn into someday. You’d take him out, no questions, am I right?
Dean: That’s not Sam.
Gordon: Yes it is. You just can’t see it yet. Dean, it’s his destiny. Look, I’m sympathetic. He’s your brother, you love the guy. This has got to hurt like hell for you.
Would Bobby have built the panic room a decade earlier? Or would he have let Sam grow up free but he would have still maintained that Olivia should be kept locked up 24/7? If that had been the case, Bobby’s reasoning wouldn’t have been sound. Namely, he wouldn’t have been able to rely on John keeping Sam on the straight and narrow considering the boys were sometimes left to their own devices when John went hunting.
