Looks awesome..can’t wait. Demon dean is pretty ironic….demons man, they just know how to twist the truth and taunt you with it. Really clever how they have demon dean try to put on Sam deans own feelings and beliefs….dean always saw sam as his job and responsibility, but it was never sam who put that on dean or believed that. All sam ever wanted from dean is for him to be his brother….dean himself took on the parental role. Though his father had a lot to do with his feelings regarding Sam, dean admitted to Sam in ahbl2 that it was always his responsibility to take care of him…dad didn’t even have to tell him. Dean took that role on himself and its a role that he not only wanted imho, but a role he needed to fill. Just hope Sam realizes that dd is just toying with him….this is so brilliant. What a perfect and logical way to open the door to dean, to finally get him to face his inner monster. This has been the core of his issues. Deans need to be responsible for Sam. I believe when dean is cured and he remembers how he taunted Sam, dean will finally admit to sam why needs him so much and why he’s made the decisions he’s made….really think we’re going to finally get what we’ve been waiting for:D
They have touched upon these feelings before with Dean going back to Skin. I have never doubted the love but the resentment deep down has been there as well .
It is a hard hitting scene between the brothers they have chosen to show.
I have also though that maybe deep down Dean resents that he had to look after Sam his whole life. I think if he admits it he can move on from it. Also, doesn’t Dean’s hair look great. Maybe it’s the year of Dean’s hair instead of Sam’s. LOL
I am sure Dean does resent what was dumped on him at such an early age. I do believe it is mostly aimed at John. He said it pretty well in the dream root episode I thought. Oh yeah and DD’s hair is very nice. 🙂
Season 10 has been off to a hard-hitting fast paced brilliant start. They are getting at the root core of the Sam and Dean relationship; which is the bond that has cemented this saga. The brothers are truly walking in the footsteps of the other. This is a prize boxing match with each blow a bit of personal history and emotion. Sam’s love in the form of determination, dedication, and persistence is meeting Dean’s demonic state blow for blow. I can only see this whole thing as redemptive for both- personally and in regard to their relationship. You go Sam- bring human Dean back! (JP & JA are in the zone!)
Oh Sam why did you just walk out of the room? Don’t you remember that didn’t go so well the last time you did that?:(
GO back SAMMY!!!!!! 😉
Oh Sam why did you just walk out of the room?
Because its supernatural 😉
I also have to ask why is DD tied up with ropes? Crowley was chained from head to toe.
If you look closely, Dean appears to have the demon handcuffs on his right wrist.
ouch, I winced for Sam when Demon Dean said those things. It is ironic, though; back in Southern Comfort, when Sceptre-Dean was saying some awful things to Sam, I was thinking, wonder if he’s gonna blame Sam for his dead mother. Guess I was two seasons early on that one 😉
Just wondering if the demon cure is going to even work on Demon Dean, or if it’s gonna take more than that.
I knew the Spectre episode was going to referenced. Man I hate that episode. I felt then as I feel now, that that not everything spectre-Dean said was gospel and exactly how Dean felt about Sam. Nor do I believe everything that falls out of DD’s mouth should be taken as true feelings. I think the spectre took grains of truth and twisted and magnified things to achieve what it wanted, deaths. I also think DD is doing something similar, twisting and aiming for Sam’s soft spots to hurt him as much as he can to just be cruel and rattle Sam. Sam isn’t falling for that. I think Dean does have a lot of issues in regards to his brother and resentments (mainly towards John) but both the spectre and now DD is using them to twist the knife. Dean, doesn’t hold Sam responsible for Mary’s death but Sam might feel responsible so DD goes for the throat. This was about the spectre reference not anything in particular you posted. Did I mention I hated that episode?:)
Logically and rationally Dean doesn’t blame Sam for Mary’s death. But grief and resentment isn’t always logical or rational. I would be on 100% board with the idea that Dean doesn’t blame Sam for Mary’s death, if Carver hadn’t already played with that idea. In Changing Channels, he had Dean answer “yes” to the question “Was Sam responsible for your mother’s death?”. So I’m only 95% sure that Dean doesn’t blame Sam, no matter how much he doesn’t want to.
I do believe there are grains of truth there. Magnified and exaggerated to beat Sam over the head with. I still feel Dean holds John responsible and resents him more that he ever has Sam for their messed up childhood and Mary’s death.
Leah – stop hedging, tell us how you really feel about the Southern Comfort episode. 🙂 That episode did serve a purpose in S8, to re-enforce Sam’s feelings of inadequacy as a brother which ultimately led to where things ended up in Sacrifice. While you’re right about Dean, there is a grain of truth, some deeply buried resentment about what happened to his family. And Demon Dean is gonna go for the jugular, throw all this crap at Sam to rattle him and go after Sam’s insecurities in any way he can.
🙂
Demon Dean is very cruel to Sam. I am glad Sam isn’t buying into his taunts. Don’t turn your back Sam!;)
I think dean resents his mother, but can’t bring himself to admit it. Dean was there. He saw Mary make the deal with the yellow eyed demon to bring John back. Dean knows Mary sold her son ten years before Sam was even born. When Sam tried to blame himself for her death, dean was adamant about it not being his fault and that was before he knew the truth. I think dean resents Mary for dying. If she were alive then he wouldn’t have felt the need to take her place. He totally resents John for so many reasons but mostly I think for being an absent parent and putting parental responsibility on dean.
Dean confessed to having issues with Sam in skin, but mostly it was feelings of jealousy because sam went to school and made friends, something dean believed he couldn’t do. He also never had the courage to defy his father as Sam had been able to. Thing is, he could’ve. Deans resentment wasn’t that he had to take care of Sam, because I think taking care of Sam filled this need in him….but as with some parents, it’s not easy to accept that your child is an adult and can go out on their own. I think sometimes a parent might feel that they made all the sacrifices for their kids, so their kids should do what they think is best, after all that they did for them, the kids owe them. I always felt dean believed that because he took care of Sam, because he was essentially his parent, sam owed him and for dean what sam owed him was sam himself. That’s what dean wanted from Sam, to be by his side, the family business, and sometimes dean wanted sam to see things the way he did. So sam ran away from hunting and John, but dean saw it as Sam leaving him . Sam just wanted a life that was safe, dean saw it as Sam ditching his family, well him. Sam never “left” dean. Dean is his brother and he loves him. No matter what that will never change. Sam has acknowledged deans sacrifices and thanked him for them. Sam has always wanted more for dean. Truth be told, sam is a man now. He’s not deans responsibility and he’s not deans job……he’s his brother. While dean has on occasion admitted that, he still holds on to that parental role…. And with that the idea that he is responsible for Sam. This is deans issue though. Sam never said or did anything to make dean feel that he was responsible for him. Sam is the only one who wanted dean to do something for dean. So I don’t think he resents Sam for having to take care of him, I think he resents Sam for seemingly not needing him to take care of him anymore. Jmho;)
Wow, this looks really interesting. I think what DD is saying is a lot of what Sam THINKS Dean feels about Sam, not necessarily what Dean actually feels. The look on Sam’s face when his back is turned to DD says he feels that guilt for having the demon blood and everything that came after. Sadly, I think Mary making the deal is ultimately responsible and then John for raising his two boys in a lifetime of revenge. Too bad Cole couldn’t see what looking for revenge has done to the Winchesters. He’d go home and enjoy the life he has with his wife and son and forget about Dean.
I think so too.
I agree Prix68.
I think this is where both of the boys personal issues come into play. I agree that what dd is saying is a lot of what sam thinks dean feels about him and not what he actually feels. funny leah, the spectre episode didn’t come into mind when I watched this clip….but as I just lay here thinking about it….a couple of other eps came into mind. I thought about salvation where sam insinuated that it was his fault his mom was dead. I thought about provenance, when sam confessed to sarah that he was cursed and again I thought about playthings where sam begged dean to kill him if he turned because “even now, everyone around me dies”. carver, in an interview, told us that sam’s perspective is that he believes he is cursed…which is why he was so ready to die at the beginning of s9. but really I thought about the purge and sam posing the question to dean: be honest with me, you saved me for you, not for me. dean never denied sam’s belief. he instead changed the direction of the conversation…telling sam in the same circumstances he would do the same thing. now while part of me believes sam is right and dean did save sam for him, it’s also true that the reason dean saves sam isn’t only because he needs him and that it’s his job. dean does it out of love. problem is sam doesn’t know this because it’s never been said. dean unwittingly perpetuated sam’s belief that dean still sees sam as merely his responsibility. I think dean, at some level understood where sam was coming from, but due to his own issues couldn’t deal with it. he couldn’t face the truth about himself so he swept it under the rug and changed the subject, thus getting a response from sam in the purge that he misconstrued as sam not willing to save him, instead of sam never going against dean’s wishes. round and round the Winchesters go. I think dd though is using sam’s misguided feelings against him, to rattle him…to break him. dd will say anything and do anything to survive.
again, it’s very specific what dd chose to say to sam….it all goes back to dean’s own personal issues as well as sam’s. it’s most definitely a brilliant segue into finally dealing with the boys inner demons, confronting them head on and letting them go….as vile as dean’s words will be and no matter how much they break sam’s heart and ours…it’s really the first step in the process of the healing that’s to come. 😉
It’s not that I disagree nappi, I actually do agree with you take on things here. My only concern is that, in his compromised state Dean will say these awful things to Sam, confirming Sam’s worst fears about himself (like in Southern Comfort (Leah’s most Favorite episode!) or like Sam did to Dean in Asylum) and then, when both brothers are rational and calm, it will never get discussed further. Dean will say “Sam” and Sam will say “I know” or Sam will say “Do we need to talk about this?” and Dean will say “Oh yeah, lets and then we can cry on each other’s shoulder,” and the whole thing will get dropped just like it always has. I am praying that this time they actually TALK, as in really talk; not while one of them is a demon, or addicted to blood, or soulless, or compromised by a supernatural entity that removes their filter, actually talk like the brothers that they are. It’s happened so few times, even in the early days, I am trying to figure out why they would do so now….. but here’s to hoping. :p
Leah’s not the only one regarding Southern Comfort. If there was ever an episode that shouldn’t have been inflicted on us with no fix or mitigation it’s that one …. and if there was ever a episode that makes me wonder what we are in for tomorrow it’s Southern Comfort.
“Lean, mean, Dean” indeed. Poor Sam, my heart just breaks for him. He knows it’s the MoC making Dean the way he is right now, but still, that was so hurtful. Man, these boys sure do know what chains to yank when they want to hurt. This is Dean to the extreme, and as much as I enjoy my Winchesters with a little danger to them, I want Dean back in the Impala where he belongs, hunting with his baby bro. Although, I think the road to get there is going to be a very arduous one. 🙁
This is just a quick observation that I had after looking at the pics for the 200th episode party….and it may qualify as a spoiler of sorts, so if you are actively tying to avoid those, you may want to give the rest of this comment a pass.
I happened to notice in the pics for the 200th episode party that Jensen’s hair was back to being regular Dean hair (read VERY short), so I guess that means that whatever else happens in episode 3, that Dean is in some way back to his old short haired self. I don’t know if that qualifies as a spoiler… but better safe then sorry. I, for one, am glad. Demon Dean has been fun, but he’s skirting the line (as[i] I knew he would) and theres only so much of that kind of behavior that I can take from him before he goes too far and I write him off. I think TPTB have handled it really well, not coping out on his evilness (which i was really worried that they would do) and not letting us forget that he’s in some ways a victim of what’s happened to him, so he gets a little leeway IMO on his behavior or at least some understanding. It’s a fine line they’ve maintained. But, there is only so much you can do with a character like Demon Dean… either have him become the true BIG BAD of the season which would necessitate him being destroyed (not going to happen) or cure him. So, it’s time to cure him. I hope that the lions share of the episode is with the cure and only bits with Crowley and Cas; unless Cas comes to help with the cure, which it looks like he’s going to, or to kill Dean maybe (angel blade!). Anyway, they’ve built up this cure so I’d like to see the brothers spend some time on it and for them FINALLY to dig into the problems in some real way (wishful thinking probably!). Only 1 more day until we find out!
Edited by Admin – This comment was reported. Allow me to answer your question though. There’s no outrage because plain and simple, the episode hasn’t aired yet. So don’t go insulting the fandom until you see an actual finished product to analyze. You can share your anger on Tuesday evening, minus the insult to the fandom.
Well for everyone that was worried over the summer that Demon!Dean would be noble and saving kittens with Sam being the bad guy, I am certain you have cause for relief. DD is ugly and evil and certainly giving our hero Sam the challenge of a life time. A challenge he has not seen since Episode 1.12 Faith with much more on the line that simple death; saving the very nature of Dean’s soul for all eternity. Season 10 off to a incredible start with J2 at the top of their game.
I am pleasantly surprised by DD’s ruthlessness especially in this last episode. What’s the point in making someone a demon if they aren’t demonlike? So, he has been that and it looks like he is even more so in episode 3. Overall I have found his demon arc pretty satisfying, and I was VERY skeptical.

However, Sam was challenged to save Dean pretty much all of season 3, 16 full episodes, so to say that he hasn’t been faced with something like this since Faith is a bit inaccurate. He did fail to save Dean at that time, something that I think haunts him to this day, but he did try and the repercussions in season 3 are pretty much the same as they are now, which is Dean’s soul for all eternity. Given Sam’s actions in Faith and his actions in pretty much ALL of season 3 and his words to his hell self in season 6 (“you know me, you know why, I am not leaving my brother alone out there,”) along with his current relentlessness makes Sam’s actions in season 8 look even more inexplicably out of character than ever. Sam’s inaction then is the anomaly, not his drive now.
Point well made and I agree. My comparison to Faith referred to the immediacy of the situation in conjunction with the similarity of Sam facing Dean’s dire condition seemingly alone. (No Father or Bobby, & fading Cas) I also did not imply that Sam’s drive now is an anomaly nor was I alluding to season 8 depressed Sam. We can point to numerous times Sam attempted to save Dean, did save him or was simply there for love and support: Your examples of Season 3- Trying to save Dean from Hell; Season 6 Sam battling his hallucinations to hang in there for Dean; 1.11 Scarecrow- came back for Dean; 2.0 In my Time of Dying (one of my favorites) Dean even thanked Sam for not giving up on him; 2.10 Hunted; 2.20 What is and What Should Never Be -found and saved Dean; 3.11 Mystery Spot; 4.06 Yellow Fever; 5.07 Curious case of Dean Winchester – won Dean’s years back in card game; 5.18 Point of No return when Dean was going to give in to Michael and Sam was the only one who had faith he would not and got Dean back on track by his sheer love and trust of his brother; 7.04 Defending your Life; 7.13 Slice Girls- pulled the trigger when Dean could not. (Not inclusive list) .
Hehe! That’s a pretty awesome list! 😀
