Supernatural Again Shows Year to Year Gains in Ratings: Number 2 on This Year’s List
Every year, Vulture goes through an exercise with ratings. For the most sought after 18-49 demographic, they like taking the overall ratings for the TV season gone by (Live plus DVR +7), find returning TV shows, compare the results to last year, and rank these shows by percentage gained or lost.

In last year’s chart, “Supernatural” was number one on this list, a very remarkable feat for a show in it’s eighth season, but not too surprising considering it moved from a Friday death slot to a high profile Wednesday slot following Arrow. But at number one, it’s gains were only 22%.

In this year’s chart though, Supernatural finished number two on the list, showing a remarkable 27% gain over last year’s big gain! The move to Tuesday has proved to be a very successful one.
Only ten shows gained this season, and while it’s truly remarkable that Supernatural, a show in its ninth season showed such gains, another gainer was Law and Order: SVU, which was in it’s 15th season! There’s something to be said about long running shows. They’re comfort food. Number one of the list was Scandal, which really did have a huge creative resurgence this year.
“Supernatural” was the only CW gainer. “Arrow” dropped 8%, “The Vampire Diaries” dropped 13%, “Hart of Dixie” dropped 25%, “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Carrie Diaries” dropped 29%, and “Nikita” dropped 40%. Considering Nikita’s final six episodes aired between Thanksgiving and New Years on Friday, aka burn off mode, that’s not too surprising. Too bad, those were six great episodes.
This chart has been revealing in years past, because it shows just how dramatically TV viewing for the broadcast networks is declining. Keep in mind though, none of these figures counts video on demand and online viewing, which is where a lot of shows are seeing big increases. Is it enough to make up the margins of declines though? Who knows, we don’t know those figures.
So, once again congratulations “Supernatural.” The question is, can they keep this up? Who knows, but this still goes to show how surprising our show can be.
Yay for us and SPN. 🙂
Three cheers also. Means it catches up new people all the time. 🙂
