The WFB Spoilery Lite/Speculative Preview: Supernatural 9.20 “Bloodlines”
Well, it’s time for the long awaited Spinoff Pilot, “Bloodlines.”
The CW official synopsis
“Bloodlines“
SAM AND DEAN INVESTIGATE MONSTER FAMILIES IN CHICAGO – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a case in Chicago, where they discover that various mafia-esque monster families are, unknown to humans, running the underbelly of Chicago. One is a family of shapeshifters run by Margo Lassiter (guest stars Danielle Savre), whose leadership is thrown into question when her brother David (guest star Nathaniel Buzolic) returns home. The other reigning family in town is made up of werewolves, lead by Julian Duval (guest star Sean Faris). While in Chicago, Sam and Dean meet Ennis (guest star Lucien Laviscount), a man with a personal vendetta against the monsters. The Winchesters warn Ennis about heading into the hunter lifestyle, but Ennis refuses to listen and starts down a dangerous path. Robert Singer directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb (#920).

I don’t know guys. I’m personally not too stoked about this. I’m going to give it a chance, but I honestly feel that The Adventures of Sheriff Jody and her almost vampire foster daughter Alex/Annie would have a better idea for a spinoff. Throw in Krissy and the kids from “Freaks and Geeks” and there was a chance for a show that could feel like “Supernatural,” not Monster Mobs or “The Originals” in Chicago, now with no Originals just regular monsters. I hope I’m misjudging this and that it will be more compelling than I think. How do you feel?
I hate to be a downer, and I will watch this episode of SPN, but I have no interest in the spin-off. It doesn’t sound like it has anything Supernatural-related, except the name. I’m not into CW angst shows, have never watched The Originals (but have an idea of what it is about), and have never watched Vampire Diaries (but have an idea of what it is about). Both are too teen-angsty for my tastes, and I suspect that this one will be a Romeo and Juliet version of the same thing. I got the feeling that Jodi’s episode, with it’s theme about family and loyalties, was a lead-in to Bloodlines. I will be happy to get back to Supernatural and wrap this season up — although it has had way too much “relationship” angst for my tastes, too, and I am hoping that S10 brings more action than angst for the Winchesters.
I hate to say it but I agree with you, Percy. I watch Vampire Diaries, The Originals and other similar CW (not to mention Lost Girl on SyFy) shows and Bloodlines just feels like a retread with Romeo and juliet vibes. I really wish there was more horror and hunting and less angst. I agree Jody and Alex would have made a better spin off….Garth and his werewolf family would have made a better spin off. hell the adventures of Mamma and Kevin Tran would have made for better spin off.
I’ll still give it a shot…but i’m sort of over angst and melodrama and love triangles.
Ha, ha, ha. I agree with you on this Amyh. I do watch all those other shows, but I won’t be watching this one. Just the one episode, because it’s Supernatural of course! 😉
I was telling some people even Garth and his sock puppet would lend more SPN spinoff credibility. 😉
There were so many ways the spinoff could have gone. My personal favorite would have been Samuel Colt and the origin of the gun, cowboy demon hunters, Indian spiritual monsters….could have been fun. This looks like another formula soap with fangs. Hope we are all wrong.
Cheryl, that would have been awesome and so very very different. Its too bad they didn’t take the wild west theme and run with it. That truely would have been original.
Oh absolutely, Samuel Colt would have been a great spinoff. Make him young and hunky, to grab the viewers they want, then go to town with that concept. I’d love that.
It doesn’t seem like the CW wants to take a chance. Maybe because Reign didn’t do as well as expected. But a wild west theme with monsters would have been a riot. It seems like they want to try and please the Twilight fans.
I will have to say though that the last promo at least looked like fun and supposedly a big shoe drops at the end of the episode regarding the MOC.
I’ll be watching, and will keep an open mind about the concept but, from the sounds of it, find myself agreeing with most of the posters here.
Eliot Ness as a hunter would have been awesome too. My fears about it are the same as from the people that posted above me.
Yes since they are going to go “the Chicago way”.:)
I agree, I am pensive about the “spin-off” but I will wait and see what they do. As an “Old Bag” I am not much on watching kids, it really has to be something special (as SPN was) and I’m certainly not into mobster stuff even if it is monster-y. I think they forget that some monsters don’t age, so if they use kids (20’s) they will grow up.
I would have been big time excited for some BAMF ladies like Jody! In fact wouldn’t Kim Rhodes and Sam Ferris make a badass pair? All I see on these pics is skinny. young and…yawn. No offense to the actors in any way, I just like adults of average size.
Anyway, don’t mean to get negative, I will give it my full attention before making a decision and I expect good work from this team.
i’m intrigued – spin-offs are tough and usually disappointing, but i like the actor they cast as the hunter, Ennis, and i like Chicago as a setting. i don’t much care for relationship angst, but i haven’t seen anything yet to make me expect that to be a big part of the show (other than the fact that it is on CW). absolutely agree that more BAMF ladies (or guys, for that matter) would be a bonus. it’s been fun reading other ideas for the spin-off – there have been some good ones! i personally was rooting for Death & The Reapers… 🙂
whatever happens with the spin-off, i think it can still be a good MOTW episode and hope it doesn’t feel forced in. mostly, i am eager to get back to MOC, Abbadon vs Crowley, and Metatron. wish they had aired this pilot a couple episodes back, because it’s getting harder to be excited about anything that delays progress on the arcs that have gotten so good this season!
I’m with you Percysowner. Less than stoked.
The spin off looks and sounds like it might be too teen angsty for me. I did watch The Vampire Diaries for a couple of years with my teenage girls but even they soon tired of all the teen angst and tedious love triangles and we only lasted one episode of The Originals. I love the idea upthread of an Eliot Ness spin off, that would have been awesome.
As for this episode, I mostly wish we were just getting on with the mytharcs instead of having another MOTW episode. The lack of movement on the mytharcs is killing my interest in them. Although I do love that pic of Sam and Dean in the Impala and I do, generally, like Andrew Dabb’s episodes.
I just don’t know how they can consider it a spinoff. don’t spinoffs usually have well known characters from one show branch off on their own? or at the very least the star of the old show kind of continues on…like archie from archie bunker. Laverne and Shirley spun off from happy days but they were beloved returning characters. they weren’t just one off characters we met for the first time and weren’t even vested in. personally i’m not interested and won’t watch. I could see if it was a show that had misha, mark s, kim Rhodes, Felicia day…some one we know and care about, who have a history. I would prefer the ghostfacers …..this show doesn’t really have the definition of a spin off to me…..but hey, I wish it well.
I agree with pretty much everyone here; all I get from this is an overwhelming feeling of ‘meh’. How is this a spinoff exactly? In name only it appears. It bears more similarities to TVD than to Supernatural IMO. They could just have easily called this The Vampire Diaries:Bloodlines and it would work just as well. Vampires and werewolves aren’t that far apart. And I agree with, well, everyone, that its too teen soap looking for my tastes. I said in another post devoted to the spinoff that I see this series being lots of airbrushed and tousled haired perfection with many lingering (read excessively long) up close camera shots of blanks looks that we are supposed to interpret as ’emotion’ of some kind. Yawn. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised, but I’m not holding out much hope. The most interesting thing in the preview pictures is the one where Jared literally towers over the diminutive Laviscount.
