The WFB Spoilery Lite/Speculative Preview: Supernatural 9.13 “The Purge”
We have another episode tomorrow, entitled “The Purge”. This is the last episode before the mini-hiatus during the Olympics. Personally, I’d rather watch Supernatural over the Olympics, but I’m not the average viewer, so we get this break.
On to what we know.
9.13 – “The Purge” Synopsis
SAM AND DEAN GO UNDERCOVER AT A SPA — Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate recent murders where the victims were hundreds of pounds lighter after their deaths. Suspecting witches, the two go undercover at a fancy day spa that all of the victims had attended for weight loss. While Sam is hired as a fitness instructor, Dean takes kitchen duty. After Dean swipes some tainted food and passes out, the guys realize someone is drugging the guests and literally sucking all of the fat out of them until they die. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder (912).
Then we have the promo.
This starts as a chirpy ad for the weight loss spa and segues into Sam and Dean noting that a client went from 300 lbs to 90 lbs overnight. We also get a glimpse of Sam in a really nice tank top and shorts and Dean in a hairnet because he is acting as a cook for the spa.
We have a sneak preview as well.
A perky female cop, sporting a Minnesota accent straight of of Fargo fills Sam and Dean in on the case. A competitive eater has died as if all the fat had been “hoovered” out of him. The cop and Dean scarf down donuts. This looks like a fun scene.
Then, of course, there are the promo pics. There are several of Sam looking suitably hot while coaching clients and doing yoga. Dean cooking in his hairnet. Sam confronting one of the other cooks and an unidentified guest star pushing another unidentified guest star in a wheel chair.
So what speculation do I have? This seems to be a stand alone episode that is being marketed as upbeat and cheery. But so was last week’s, and who would have guessed that an episode about Garth being a werewolf would end up causing huge discussions in the fandom about the brotherly relationship? Dean becoming sick due to the food at the spa may lead to Sam trying to save his life and begin the reconciliation process between the brothers. This could go several ways, either Sam understands Dean’s desperation to save him at the church or Dean is forced decide if there is a price he doesn’t want to pay to be saved. Either of these would send us into mini-hiatus on an upswing for the brotherly relationship. This could also just be a cute filler episode with Sam and Dean working together, but not getting any closer to working out their differences. We will know tomorrow night.
The CHCH promo is up
Dean is telling Sam they do kill monsters. Sam reminds Dean he was ready to die, so we may get some insight on Sam’s feelings, or not. Any way, just a few more hours.
I think the woman in the wheelchair is the police officer. (This will add some extra emotion in the episode, if the boys have to save her before she gets “hoovered” to death.)

I think Dean getting sick from the food will be along the lines of Wishful Thinking and the bad sub. Food poisoning and some special time with the porceline god. 🙂
All in all it looks like it wiill be a fun eppisode but as you said…hopefully it will also castalyst the brothers onto a path of talking.

Looks like a light MOTW episode but you never know; no idea what kind of monster it is, though. Sam and Dean suspect it’s a witch, which means it probably isn’t a witch. Maybe some kind of changeling offshoot?

Well if they stick to just working partners like to see how Sam handles if anything happens to his partner Dean aka not brother. I keep hopeing that on the phone or throwing cook up against the freezers he is looking for Dean but can Dean really get damsel in distress with the mark of cain on himself?? Unless they do try to save the sherriff or whatever she is. But like to see Dean be damself granted know he can be totally bad ass. but i like when dean gets in trouble. Need to see Sam saving Dean a little more. JMO

I think the culprit has something to do with the marks on the girl’s back that Sam notices in pic #3.

It’s definitely not just you. That photo is just delicious.
I was already looking forward to this episode (umm…shorts…tank top…) but the CHCH promo has piqued my interest for sure. Now I have everything crossed for some insight into Sam’s feelings.

Rather fun, ordinary and creepy icky monster of the week episode…with Sam and Dean simmering nicely. And then at the end. Pow. Wow! That was a show come to maturity. To hear Sam and Dean begin to really talk. To really articulate – amazing. I hurt so much for Dean. But sadly sadly Sam is also so right. And I think he was telling the truth – given the same circumstances he would not have done the same thing. He would have allowed Dean to die. He would have tried to find a way to be alone. And he fears, probably is quite convinced, that truly Dean only wants Sam around cause of his own needs…not because of who Sam is. Sometimes letting go is about love. And believing with love that the one letting go will learn to go on. That’s love. It seems that is some of what we saw with Charlie and her mother and of Sam trying to go on, recovering from grief, when he believed Dean to be dead last season. Amazingly really only now the writers are giving us great and full conversation between the two. I just wish we could have them solve everything, learn everything, and come together soon very very fast. But that would not be good drama. Just fan happiness for me. But I am so very willing to go on this journey with Sam and Dean. For them both to heal. Together. And if these conversations carry on – well, it is very possible.

Well, so much for a cheerful, lighter episode; not cheerful and not light at all. Good twists and turns in this one, good supporting characters: I loved the sheriff and she got to live to boot! Can we see this sheriff and Jody Mills working together please? That would be awesome! And the MOW was uber creepy and icky, and yet I felt for her in the end as well. Can’t help but notice that both Sam and Dean have done a 180 on their monster views once again. Sam’s back to thinking that the good ones deserve a break and Dean’s back to wanting to waste every one of them with no exception. I guess the lessons of Benny didn’t extend very far for either brother.
I hurt for Dean so very, very much here; he’s hurt and confused. But I think Sam’s POV makes more sense and is the healthier out of the two. Pretty much no one is going to agree with me on this, but there it is. I am miffed that once again the PTB didn’t let Sam explain WHY he would let Dean go, (we already know that he would, as that is what happened in season 8) but Sam just gets to say he wouldn’t try to save Dean at all costs and then leaves it at that without explaining why. My speculation as to why has to do with collateral damage; Sam considers any collateral damage for saving their lives too high a price to pay, and Dean doesn’t. His reasoning is sound (Kevin) but Sam didn’t get to say this. And because he doesn’t explain himself (AGAIN!!!) he ends up looking like a cold hearted bastard who doesn’t care about his brother nearly as much as his brother cares about him. For once, just one time, could they let Sam explain himself fully so that just a few fans could understand where he’s coming from? Why do they always have to make Sam look so incredibly insensitive?!! Sam is going to be eviscerated by the fans over this, no doubt.

Well, I agree with you E. I think Sam’s POV does make sense and not only is it healthier to be willing to let go, it is less hurtful in many ways. I do wish the writers would let Sam actually get a speech to explain himself, but apparently that isn’t in the cards. So the ramifications of what Dean did get papered over with “he loves Sam” and Sam’s actions get no real examination.

I too wonder at the opening up of Sam’s views, thoughts, ideas. And yes, my heart breaks and actually hurts for Dean ( I realized how much I am invested in these two when I realized I was actually in pain listening to them!) I agree with Sam’s direction and POV. But the writers seem to have him incapable of finishing thoughts or fully explaining till “the next time”. I would say on the personality scale he is a thinking introvert and those words have to be ready and well thought out before he speaks, even though they might be in his head…but in the meantime the ones spoken drop so hard, waiting for more, upsetting the viewer, and Dean. I think it has been part of his personality as written from the start but the conversation has never been quite so necessary before. I have hopes for Castiel to help reflect them both and to help Sam talk to Dean.
